The Mystery of Cloomber

by Arthur Conan Doyle

Near their residence, Branksome, is The Cloomber Hall, for many years untenanted. After a little while it is settled in by John Berthier Heatherstone, late of the Indian Army. General Heatherstone is nervous to the point of being paranoid. As the story unfolds, it becomes evident that his fears are connected with some people in India whom he has offended somehow. People hear a strange sound, like the tolling of a bell, in his presence, which seems to cause the general great discomfort. Every year his paranoia reaches its climax around the fifth of October, after which date his fears subside for a while. After some time there is a shipwreck in the bay and among the survivors are three Buddhist priests who had boarded the ship from Kurrachee....

All's Well That Ends Well

by William Shakespeare

All's Well That Ends Well is a play by William Shakespeare, originally classified as a comedy, though now often counted as one of his problem plays, so-called because they cannot be easily classified as tragedy or comedy. It was probably written in later middle part of Shakespeare's career, between 1601 and 1608, and was first published in the First Folio in 1623.The name of the play comes from the proverb All's well that ends well, which means that problems do not matter so long as the outcome is good....

Frankenstein

by Mary Shelley

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is the original 1818 'Uncensored' Edition of Frankenstein as first published anonymously in 1818. This original version is much more true to the spirit of the author's original intentions than the heavily revised 1831 edition, edited by Shelley, in part, because of pressure to make the story more conservative. Many scholars prefer the 1818 text to the more common 1831 edition.Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel written by Mary Shelley about a creature produced by an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was nineteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty-one. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France i...

Novel Beginnings: The Books of: Elmore Leonard, Mark Twain, W.R. Burnett, Thomas Pynchon, William Faulkner, J.D. Salinger, George Orwell... more

by Timothy Taaffe

The first page sells the book. The last page sells your next book. --- Frank Morrison (Mickey) Spillane. A few years ago I wrote a small book about opening lines to great novels. It is still available on Amazon Kindle books. One review pointed out that my first book (One-Hundred Opening Lines To Great Novels) was fun to read "but seemed somewhat incomplete." I can say that the first book was not everything I wanted it to be. So this is the result I wanted to expand on the basic idea I had for the first book and make this book more appealing with more information and exciting material. What do you do after looking at the front cover, the back cover, or a random page of a book? I like to read the opening chapter, and I'm guessing that is what most people do. I will admit, but I don't have ...

Tick Tock To Midnight: The Man Of Sin, The Lawless One

by Les Pruitt

It is the twenty-first century, and the old prophecies have been all but forgotten by the common citizen. But there are those who remember; those who see in President Donald J. Trump’s inexplicable rise to power a tell-tale sign of the end times. Could this military draft-dodger, adulterer, and cunning realtor with a spell-binding grip on the world stage really be the Lawless One, the Man of Sin spoken of in the Book of Revelations? Could he and his right-hand man, Jared Kushner, be poised to plunge the world into chaos? The signs certainly suggest so. While the world may seem chaotic, the author and many others have glimpsed the terrible order beneath. Nothing is out of place—not the new Cold War with Russia and China, not the relocation of the US Embassy to Jerusalem, not the Temple M...

Emma

by Jane Austen

Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her. She was the youngest of the two daughters of a most affectionate, indulgent father; and had, in consequence of her sister’s marriage, been mistress of his house from a very early period. Her mother had died too long ago for her to have more than an indistinct remembrance of her caresses; and her place had been supplied by an excellent woman as governess, who had fallen little short of a mother in affection. Sixteen years had Miss Taylor been in Mr. Woodhouse’s family, less as a governess than a friend, very fond of both daughters, but particularly of...

BLACK BEAUTY by Anna Sewell: Adapted for Modern Readers

by Suparna Chakraborti

Anna Sewell wrote “Black Beauty” more than 140 years ago. It was the first novel to be written from the animal’s point of view. By letting Black Beauty tell his own story, the novel highlights the cruel treatment of animals, and suggests practical ways for people to manage horses more thoughtfully. For most of her life (following an accident at age 14) the author experienced difficulty standing and walking independently. Riding in horse-drawn carriages allowed her to experience movement and mobility. Anna Sewell appreciated the contribution of animals to human life. While “Black Beauty” is popular as a children’s book, adult readers will recognize the author’s commitment to encouraging the kind treatment of both animals and people. The author died five months after “...
