Motorcycle News: Volcanic Highland

by Sergio Rez

Race fans remember particular years because of the on-track action, and who won (or who didn’t win). But for the AMCN crew, it’s usuallysomething that happens away from the track that serves as a reminder;like that time in 2013 when then-editor Sam Maclachlan left the AMCNhouse to head to the track for race-day Sunday. Thinking hewas the last to depart, he securely locked the house andbecame the custodian of the keys.Unfortunately, he was unaware that theinternational photographers sharing our digs hada rare opportunity for a late start and were stillpunching out the zeds when Sam left. It wasn’tuntil they were loaded up with gear and readyto walk out the door they discovered theywere prisoners. They ended up scaling downthe side of the two-storey house, somehowtaking their gear with them – unscathed.Jack Miller’s exciting Moto3 win was a 2014highlight, as was the staffer who bailed from theAMCN Expo stand early, jumped into their car andnicked off home. Then, while streaming the telecaston their phone, pulled over every few minutes to senda text to the team as if they were standing at Lukey Heightscheering on the young Aussie.

Mountain Bike: Steep and Deep in Maydena

by Jery Rowland

Here we are a little over a month into the newyear, and let’s take a look at some of the thingsthat have happened, or are about to happen in theworld of mountain biking.- Maydena Bike Park has opened.- A renewed National XCO and DHI seriesis underway.- We’ve got a Junior XCO World Champion.- More fresh trails are being built at Blue Derby, with a huge further expansion planned.- There’s a new mountain bike stage race inCairns this August.- Lightweight, long-travel bikes that pedal wellare a real thing.- Mountain biking continues to grow, and morekilometres of trail are being built.- Mountain Bike Australia was recognised as aNational Sports Organisation.- The Commonwealth Games are just a coupleof months away. That’s just a few things that have just happened,or are coming up. But each one shows that ourtreasured sport is continuing to grow – andexpand. When I started mountain biking I didn’tdo any racing. I wanted to, but it seemed out ofreach. But when I started that was the best wayto find new trails and new people to ride with. 20years ago mountain biking was a lot more aboutracing and competitions. But over the past 10-15 years that shift hasbeen immense. Mountain biking is a rapidlygrowing recreational activity, and that’s oneof the prime reasons we’re seeing increasedgrowth in facilities and major infrastructurearound the country. Who would have thoughtthat multi-million dollar investment in mountainbiking in regional towns would be possible, ifyou were asked about it 10 or 15 years ago? This growth brings diversity, and I hope we’vecaptured that for you in this issue. Fromin-depth stories from the Crocodile Trophyand Cape to Cape, through to digging into theKuranda Downhill track and its history, plushearing about Brett Bellchamber’s lifetimeof experience from 24 hour solo singlespeedracing to of course testing the dirt at MaydenaBike Park, we think this issue of AustralianMountain Bike highlights what is great aboutour sport, and how it continues to grow, expandand evolve.

MotorCycle: Beauty is the Beast

by Christain Walker

“ROSSI HAS TESTED at Misano” our stand-in Sub-editor Steve Kealyannounced with a tone of incredulity when the press release fromMovistar Yamaha arrived. It took a second for the information to sinkin; it only felt like a fortnight since we were sent scrambling to ourkeyboards when news filtered through that the Italian had brokenhis leg in a dirt bike crash. A quick check of the datesrevealed it had been just 19 days, and as I readthrough the press release, I began to questionwhat it is that motivates the nine-timesworld champion. At 38 years old, he isat the tail-end of a brilliant MotoGPcareer, a career that saw him claim hisfirst world title 20 years ago aboarda 125cc Aprilia. There have beeneight more titles since, seven in thepremier category spanning the 500cctwo-stroke, and 800c and 1000ccfour-stroke eras. I wrote down aquick list of motivational factorsin the hope of putting my finger onsomething - anything. Money? Don’tmake me laugh, fame? Pffft, a contractrenewal? Nope, this year’s title? – unlikely.Rossi has bounced back from injury before, but at least one of the above would have beena motivating factor. Maybe this time it’s simplybecause he loves to race, maybe that has always beenhis motivation? Instead of getting back on a MotoGP bike less thanthree weeks after suffering displaced fractures of the tibia and fibula,a much easier option could have been to release a statement sayingthe injury is worse than first thought and plans to return have beenplaced on hold. If Rossi is this keen to get back to racing at this point inhis career, will he ever really be able to retire?

TrailRider: The Champion and the Fighter

by Kevin Company

This bike was a beast. There was a brieftime when the Japanese considered theauto an option for the future, too. Butwhile this was an interesting bike, itwasn’t a great bike. It didn’t turn real well.We last started one about three years agoand it sounded so frightening, we arguedabout who would ride it first. Soon after, itunexpectedly changed down a gear on anup-ramp and we put it back in the shed fordisplay purposes only. And we went andcleaned out our undies.

Last Flight of the Pigeon: A Journey Across China By Bicycle

by Simon Clode

This is the story of a 5000km bicycle ride across China. A journey from the manic streets of the most populous nation’s capital, all the way to Kashgar, near its most westerly edge in the province of Xinjiang. Over mountains, through deserts, and along the Silk Road; the author encounters wild dogs, furious sandstorms and too many pot noodles. After moving to Beijing, Simon Clode went in search of the world's most popular bicycle - The Flying Pigeon PA-02. The PA-02 is the bicycle that features in millions of images of China in the 1970s and 80s. Yet, despite being the most produced model of bicycle ever and being made within 100 miles of Beijing, he couldn't find a new one anywhere.Eventually, thanks to a man in Barcelona, he managed to find one of the last remaining models, which was still in the Flying Pigeon factory in Tianjin. Ignoring all advice about the unreliability and general awfulness of the bicycle from the management team, he then cycled it 140km home to Beijing in a moment of sporting endurance heroism to rival all others that also involve regular stops for Snickers. Following this triumph and in advance of Flying Pigeon’s 65th birthday, he planned to ride the Pigeon 5000km across China from Beijing to Kashgar. He trained for three months and meticulously planned a route along the one road west from Beijing. He then promptly failed in this endeavour before lunch on the very first day by destroying the bike's back wheel with the combined weight of the luggage and himself.Despite killing the Pigeon, fearing this would be his last chance to do something as exciting, he took on the remaining 4950km on the Pigeon's modern day successor - a nondescript £175 Giant mountain bike. This is the story of that journey: through sandstorms; police evictions; and thousands of questions about why he was wearing shorts in April. After Beijing, his route saw him ride through six provinces. First, he passed through industrial Hebei, the grasslands of Inner Mongolia, agricultural Ningxia and Gansu before the road disappeared. He was forced to take the road south into the barren no man's land of northern Qinghai province in order to rejoin the southern branch of the Silk Road in Xinjiang, which finally leads him to his destination. This book contains rude words.

Cycling & Walking the Camino de Santiago: Naoko Motohiro walked and her husband, Mike Newton, cycled the Camino de Santiago over five weeks from 2014 to 2016, split between 3 trips

by Mike Newton

In early 2014 we visited our friends Jessica and Nigel, and the Camino de Santiago came up in conversation. They had just completed it but we had no idea that it even existed until they told us about it. We learnt that it was a famous walk that started in St Jean Pied-de-Port and finished at Santiago, a total of 800km equating to 500 miles. This distance seemed to be an awful long distance to me. The most I had walked in a day was the Yorkshire Three Peaks, which was about 25 miles. I had lost a few toenails on that walk and did not want to repeat the experience. However Naoko, who was a much keener walker than me, wanted to learn more about it. She was told that she should:•Read the book by John Brierley, entitled ‘Pilgrim's Guide To The Camino De Santiago’.•Watch the film starring Martin Sheen called ‘The Way’.We went on to walk & cycle the Camino over 3 years, with me cycling due to a foot problem. The book includes many photographs and our tale of of our trips, including the wonderful camaraderie that we found along the way.

Cycling the Velodyssee from La Rochelle to Roscoff: Three over-60 year-old Englishmen on a cycling tour of over 400 miles along the Velodyssee from La Rochelle to Roscoff

by Mike Newton

In early 2017 I heard about a new bike route in France called the ‘Velodyssee’, which runs from Roscoff down to Hendaye at the Spanish border, and is over 1200km (750 miles) in length. I checked out the website https://www.velodyssey.com and could see that a large part of the route hugged the west coast of France. I decided to cycle this route and found two friends to accompany me. Due to time constraints I decided to cycle over just half the route from La Rochelle to Roscoff, a distance of 640km (400 miles). Although the website gives some information about each route sections, I could not picture the route in the least in my mind. This book provides the story of our ride with the many photographs providing an idea of what the route is like. Overall the route was very varied with canal sections, cycling through forests and close to the sea, then along an old railway track. We completed cycling the route in 7 days so almost 60 miles a day on average. We took one short-cut cycling up to Nantes to ensure that we could complete the route in 7 days.

A Ride on the Kettle Valley Rail Trail: A Biking Journal

by Dale Olausen

The Kettle Valley Rail Trail is one of the longest and most scenic biking and hiking trails in Canada. It covers a good stretch of the south-central interior of British Columbia, about 600 kilometers of scenic countryside. British Columbia is one of the most beautiful areas of Canada, which is itself a beautiful country, ideal for those who appreciate natural splendour and achievable adventure in the great outdoors.

The trail passes through a great variety of geographical and geological regions, from mountains to valleys, along scenic lakes and rivers, to dry near-desert condition grasslands. It often features towering canyons, spanned by a combination of high trestle bridges and long tunnels, as it passes through wild, unpopulated country. At other times, it remains quite low, in populated valleys, alongside spectacular water features such as beautiful Lake Okanagan, an area that is home to hundreds of vineyards, as well as other civilized comforts.

The trail is a nice test of one’s physical fitness, as well as one’s wits and adaptability, as much of it does travel through true wilderness. The views are spectacular, the wildlife is plentiful and the people are friendly. What more could one ask for?

What follows is a journal of two summers of adventure, biking most of the trail in the late 1990s. It is about 33,000 words in length (2 to 3 hours reading), and contains numerous photographs of the trail. There are also sections containing a brief history of the trail, geology, flora and fauna, and associated information.

After reading this account, you should have a good sense of whether the trail is right for you. If you do decide to ride the trail, it will be an experience you will never forget.

Driving across the states by automobile could have been a possibility, but it was ultimately decided that the best way to enjoy the many sights would be by bicycle, at a much slower pace. From riding past a stunningly beautiful section of a pine tree forest in Illinois, to pedaling up a steep incline to the top of a mountain pass in Colorado, to being generously offered a ride during a downpour of rain by a man and his family in a school bus, the adventures on the journey were never-ending. The kindness of the American people was amazing and joyful at many stops along the way.
