The ancient Vietnamese life in which Tung was raised is being torn apart. It is not enough to work hard and grow rice anymore. Now every farmer in Mai Dong has to pick a side.

The French or the Communists.

"They are going to murder your father."

Intelligence, humility and graft made Que an honorable figure in Mai Dong. His values ensured the family's survival through famine and flood. They will not protect him against the Communists, who need class-enemy victims for their land reform campaign.

Tung becomes protector and provider for the family, who struggle to stick together as World War Two, the French Indochinese War, and the American War tear his country apart over forty years.

Vietnam becomes the battleground for th...

After joining the New Years Day Festival, from Busan we caught the Ferry to Fukuoka in Japan. Using our 14 day JR train pass, we first ventured south to Nagasaki, then toured north, visiting places such as Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Gifu and Hiroshima before reaching our final destination, Tokyo.
Most pictures were taken with Nikon 20mm f/1.8 and Sigma 35mm f/1.4

Post Your Own Being Here

by Jerry Jackamo

In this experimental memoir set in 2003, a young Midwestern man tries to escape his lowly status and personal tendencies by moving to Korea.
Post Your Own Being Here follows Jerry Jackamo, a broke business journalist addled by alcohol and self-doubt, from his backwater Michigan hometown to an equally backwater South Korean town, where he takes a job teaching English to middle school children in an attempt to reconstruct his identity and get ahead in life.
Filled with phrases and imagery burbling up from the subconscious, dwellings on trivialities, impressions of Korean culture, and large doses of gleeful idiocy, this descent into absurdity blends an inside view of Korean culture with personal episodes that are at turns dark and jubilant.
Come along with Jerry Jackamo on h...

Tokyo Budget

by Laura Gibbs

The only downside to Tokyo is the cost. Consistently the world's most expensive city, if you are not careful, Tokyo can bankrupt you overnight! This guide has been written by a former resident of Tokyo who spent four months exploring as much as possible (and occasionally working). I've visited all the must see spots, eaten too much sushi, shopped on Harajuku street, and spent many Sundays people watching in the park! I decided not to climb mount Fuji but instead rode the world's tallest roller coaster (that offers great views of Fuji-san)! And I wrote this guide to point you in the right direction - where to stay, what to visit and how to have a great holiday without breaking the bank! The trick to conquering Tokyo lies in organization! Google Maps is amazing and will get you from station ...

The Nepali Flat

by Gordon Alexander

Join Gordon Alexander in Nepal as he drags his ‘heavy arse’ over the Himalayas in this hilarious, adventure-soaked account of the Three Passes Trek, culminating in a visit to Everest Base Camp. The Nepali Flat, littered with Aussie slang (and explanations) and topped off with a dry sense of humour, is your ideal travel companion, or if you’re just looking for a bloody good yarn.

Together with guide Subash and porter Nima, Gordon tackles high passes in excess of 5400 metres (17700ft) and explains how high altitude affects a mildly-overweight road builder from sea level in the tropics. Each part of the journey brings new challenges including sub-freezing temperatures, almost falling into a crevasse, and alarmingly warm beer. Along the way he discovers the local Kukri Rum, ...
