Golf: Power Secrets

by Robinhood Ferdinand

IT is 29 years since Golf Australia firstpublished a ranking of this country’s finestgolf courses.Back in 1989, a judging panel of sixcast their eye over more than 40 coursesto eventually come up with a final listrepresenting the best 20 courses in Australia. It was a ranking list clearly dominated atthe pointy end by the world famous qualitycourses of the Melbourne Sandbelt. In the years since that inaugural rankingexercise there has been plenty of changeto our list, the Australian golfing landscapeand the process by which we rank the bestcourses. One thing that hasn’t changedthough is the course sitting atop the treeat No.1, again in 2018.That layout is RoyalMelbourne’sWest course.By the turn of the century our list hadexpanded to ranking theTop-50. But withmore high quality courses being builtand older courses undertaking extensiveredesigns, the decision was made that 2012would see our first compilation of theTop-100Courses in Australia. This year we present our fourthTop-100 Courses list and the quality ofcourses making the ranking has never beenhigher, which was one reasonwhy we waited so long to doour first list of centurions. It was always the aim ofthis magazine to some dayexpand our ranking to reachthe ton, but only when webelieved we could provide aranking where the depth inquality, of the courses on thelist, ran deep enough. Now, six years afterpublishing our firstTop-100, the voting hasnever been tighter, while the anticipation offinding out what courses make the list hasnever been greater. Before you dive into this year’s ranking,I would like to acknowledge the incrediblehard work and devotion our reader panelhas put into helping compile this ranking. It may seem like a dream job to playsome of the best courses in the country, and our panellists are, of course, extremelyprivileged. But they arenot paid any form ofremuneration or expensesand undertake their task forthe love of the game. And a huge thank you toall of the clubs andgolf courses who havehosted our panellists.Without their kind hospitality, producing these rankingswould simply not havebeen possible.Nearly 170 courses received votes fromour judges for this ranking, which suggeststhere is good golf to be found beyond the100. Perhaps one day, we’ll have to expandour ranking even further.

A Fork in the Cart Path: a struggling bogey golfer considers giving up the game forever

by Randy Stewart

"Improve or quit!" That's the ultimatum Randy Stewart gave himself when his mediocre golf game fell completely apart. His solution was to seek professional help for twelve months and to record his experience along the way. This book is that narrative, an autobiography of his efforts to salvage his game. It is not a rehash of prior events but rather a reaction as they unfolded. As you read, you will become part of a gallery watching this troubled hacker determine his golfing future.

Murder at Augusta: a Darwin Summers Golf Mystery

by James Koeper

A famous detective. A legendary golf course. Eighteen holes to unmask a killer.

There is a victim: a con man killed by a blow to the head from a seven iron. There is also an accused: a wealthy and respected entrepreneur seen fleeing the scene. In the eyes of the police, it's an open and shut case. In the eyes of Darwin Summers, world famous detective turned golfer, it is a chance to sharpen his game.

Darwin Summers has retired. He's put a driving range behind his estate and spends his days there, swinging a golf club. He's content; his assistant, Jake Maddox, is not. The excitement's gone, so are the headlines, and Jake's considering a new line of work. That is until a beautiful young woman, Margaret MacIntosh, visits the estate. Her father is accused of murder, and she's come to convince Summers to take his case. Jake passes on the bad news: Summers doesn't do much of anything anymore if it doesn't involve golf.
But Margaret won't take no for an answer, and she and Jake launch a plan to lure Summers from retirement. The bait is golf at Augusta National Golf Club, one of the country's most exclusive golf clubs and home to the most prestigious tournament in golf, the Masters. Summers ultimately agrees to work the case, though only on the most unusual of terms. Will he surprise everyone? Will he solve the murder, and do so during a round of golf at Augusta National?

At the core of the novel are eighteen chapters, one for each of Augusta National's holes. By the eighteenth green Summers has deduced the identity of the killer, and the reader has absorbed fascinating bits of lore about the course, the Masters, and the great players from Bobby Jones to Jack Nicklaus to Tiger Woods to Jordan Spieth. A classic who-done-it which will appeal to golfers and non-golfers alike, and will hold special interest to fans of the Masters.
