Serial Killer: Henry McKenny: Big Harry

by W Lacky

First page preview:

George Brett was a hard man. A well-known East End haulage contractor, he was fond of a fight. On Saturday 4 January 1975, he walked into a church hall in Goodmayes in Essex, accompanied by his 10-year old son Terry Neither was to come out alive.

The old church hall had long been converted for light industrial use. One half was a soft toy business, while an engineering company specialising in underwater equipment occupied the other.

Brett had been lured to the side by a man he knew as Mr Jennings. There was the possibility of some business for his haulage firm, and his son had come along for the ride. The floor of the hall was completely covered in children’s teddy bears, and racks around the wall contained diving equipment. The only other occupant of the building was a very big man, bent over a work bench.

‘Jennings’ sat Brett down on the only chair and gave the boy a teddy bear to hold. Before any more could be said, the man at the bench raised a silenced Sten sub-machine gun and shot Brett through the head. Brett fell, and the big man came closer to make certain of his kill with a second shot to the head.

The Days of Guns, & Raz's

by Raz Cue

In the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and eighty-five, a little ol’ band called Guns N’ Roses formed in Raz Cue’s living room. And thus, Cue became the band’s first manager... to be fired. With absolutely no hard feelings, Mr. Cue remained a trusted member of G N’ R’s inner circle for the remainder of the decade, allowing him to witness the iconic band tour the world’s stages as they rose to the pinnacle of rock ‘n’ roll. When the Guns N’ Roses party quit being fun for him, Cue stepped away from the swelling ranks of backstage hangers-on so that he might fully enjoy the band’s incendiary performances from a fan-in-the-audience perspective. With good times and fun stories constantly swirling about in his mind’s eye, a few years back, Mr. Cue resolved to set the standard for which all future memoirs should be judged. Four hundred and twenty drafts later, the product of that quest emerged: The Days of Guns, and Raz’s. Far more than a Hollywood rock ‘n’ roll memoir, the book follows Cue’s drug-addled journey from feral child to moral-ish adult. His spinal injury during high school and lifetime of riding a wheelchair, while higher than the International Space Station, are thrown in to keep it all rolling along.Mr. Cue manages to wrap up the whole shebang neatly within the changing landscapes of 1970s through 90s America, all the while showcasing his lifelong love of music and cheap thrills. With an undying admiration for hungry up-and-coming artists, Cue remained involved in the Los Angeles music scene through the mid-90s implosion of the Sunset Strip, so he wedges in a bit of name-dropping from that period, too. If you’ve longed for a caustic, satirical, blue-collar rock bio that delivers a stinging bitch slap to our current insanity-level political correctness, this one’s for you!

From Handguns to Paintbrushes: A Memoir of Self-Destruction, Rock Bottom, Hope, Change, and Love

by de Leyer, Joseph "Jeff"

Jeff de Leyer is the grandson of a Dutch immigrant and equestrian champion, Harry de Leyer. This in itself, created an impression of a young man born into a world of privilege and entitlement. However, this could not be any further from the truth. His biological mother and father abandoned him on a doorstep when he was only three years old, leaving him with a void that was nearly impossible to fill. Jeff spent his teen and young adult years on the streets of New York making a name for himself as a drug dealer. This is where he not only found acceptance, but also a sense of family he so desperately wanted and needed. In 1998 at 21 years of age, Jeff was arrested and later convicted of a gang-related murder, after a drug deal went horribly wrong. In prison, he was a high-ranking member of the United Blood Nation, involving him in gang wars, fights, and riots. Rock bottom came years later at the age of 39. At this point, the only thing he was looking for was redemption. He decided it was time to walk away from the only life he had ever known. This is the compelling and true story of the rise and fall of a New York Ecstasy Kingpin. It is an eye-opening excursion through the pulse of the drug world, street life, drug addiction, prison, art and true love. Through his passion for art, desire for education and love, he rose above his circumstances to embrace a new vision of the world around him.

My Life Among the Indians (Illustrated)

by George Catlin

George Catlin was a fascinating figure of the nineteenth century, an artist-explorer who ventured deep into the wilds of the newly discovered Americas to paint the rapidly vanishing indigenous populations, their leaders, warriors, medicine men and scenes from their modes of life. The gifts Catlin received over the years from these remote peoples formed the basis for a vast, important collection which Catlin loaned to the world’s biggest museums, together with his portraits. Because of the stunning, life-like likenesses he created, the awed tribes dubbed Catlin Te-hee-pe-nee Washed which means The Great White Medicine. This new 2017 edition of My Life Among the Indians is illustrated with many examples of Catlin’s artwork from this period.

The Cossacks (Illustrated)

Cossacks are a group of predominantly East Slavic-speaking people who became known as members of democratic, self-governing, semi-military communities, predominantly located in Ukraine and in Russia. They inhabited sparsely populated areas and islands in the lower Dnieper, Don, Terek, and Ural river basins and played an important role in the historical and cultural development of both Russia and Ukraine. By the end of the 18th century, Cossack nations had been transformed into a special military estate (Sosloviye), "a military class," similar to the knights of medieval Europe in feudal times. In The Cossacks, William Penn Cresson traces the history and culture of these legendary Slavic warriors.

Hanging out the Washing

by David Price

The other day, I met the Captain of the Malawi Skydiving team, and if that picture conjures up an image of a big, strong, young man with a daredevil gleam in his eye, you’re in for a surprise.
The captain’s name is Ingrid Elisabeth Price. She’s a slim 5ft 5in brunette and the mother of three children. She’s got that gleam in her eye, though, whenever she starts talking about parachuting. I asked her what made her want to do it."
'It was when we lived in Pirbright, Surrey. My husband, Gordon was stationed there with the Grenadier Guards as a Paratrooper. I was hanging out the washing when I heard the engines of an aeroplane stop overhead. I looked up and saw three tiny figures falling spread-eagled through the sky before they opened their parachutes and drifted down. I thought, ‘That’s what I want to do.’
Her husband Gordon persuaded the Army into letting her tag onto an army free-fall course at Netherhavon. The first woman ever to do the course and graduated as a fully-fledged skydiver.
When her husband was posted to Malawi to help train the Malawian armed forces she started up a parachute club and became its chief instructor.
During her time in Malawi, Ingrid trekked down to South Africa and passed a very rugged test to become the first woman in Africa to hold a 'D' licence – the laurels of the parachuting world
She captained the Malawi team to several international meets and completed a number of 'link up's as well as night jumps and on one occasion made a decent from over 18000 feet.
'The important thing to me is free falling - it’s something I can’t explain, but every jump is different, it’s always exciting.’
The story of Ingrid's achievements, in the Skydiving world, is even more remarkable, when she tells of her survival from the 'horrors' she suffered during the fall of Berlin in 1945 when, at the age of 15, she became separated from her family and fell victim to the savagery of the advancing Soviet Army during the final battle for Berlin.
Ingrid's story is a triumph of survival and achievement which began one day when she looked up whilst ‘Hanging out the Washing.’

The Diary of Lost Soul Personal and Professional Wandering

by Steven Charles Hirschfeld

I moved from New York to join America Online just to learn I would be spending all my time retaining customers by giving free trial extensions to everyone who joined with a free AOL disc they picked-up from a Blockbuster cashier or random supermarket. The effect of call center hell is released into a personal journal which served as therapy and is now available to the public along with publishing of the years around the fateful events. Read the inside stories from 2004 inside a diary of someone who witnessed how a corporate giant came to a town like a "Normal Rockwell painting" and the personal story of one soldier in their army. The story follows the quest to find personal and professional harmony through relationships with a visiting son and elusive romance. The quest for a wife to have more children while time seems to run out is a challenging goal with no qualified prospects. Furthermore, career development takes a back seat to finding any job that can support an ambitious private life. Note, since this is a private journal from 2004, the content is written as a daily journal with the back story of AOL.Jack Salk has typed his journals from 1987 through 2015 and published them as individual books for preservation. However, the books have reached an audience and some names have been changed.

The Big Blue Ball: A Memoir

by Mike McIntyre

From the author of the Wall Street Journal bestseller The Kindness of Strangers comes a humorous and deeply revealing memoir about travel, perseverance, and the surprising places we find inspiration. In 1962, when Mike McIntyre's colorful grandmother becomes the first member of his working-class California family to travel overseas, she returns with a Pan Am tote bag, its side emblazoned with a big blue ball, the airline's iconic blue globe logo.Enchanted through childhood by the magical bag, McIntyre hurtles headlong into a life of wanderlust and adventure, transforming himself from a small-town slacker into an acclaimed, globe-trotting journalist. In a book that is both coming-of-age story and travelogue, he illuminates his journey with a candid, compelling prose that has earned him praise as "a reader's dream" (San Diego Union-Tribune).Funny, moving, offbeat, and ultimately, unforgettable, The Big Blue Ball vividly captures one man's meandering search for his place in the world.
