One Good Turn: and other stories

by Angelo Marcos

They say that one good turn deserves another, but what about the opposite kind?

From the author of psychological thrillers The Artist and Sleep No More, One Good Turn is an electrifying collection of three separate but interlinked short stories, all set in London on the same fateful night.

You’ve Got a Friend
Mark is on nightshift duty on the You’ve Got a Friend Helpline. Unfortunately for the callers, his idea of help is very different to theirs.

One Good Turn
Two young tourists in London find themselves on the last train out of the city, and begin to wonder if they’ll ever get to their hotel…

Fare Game
An illegal cab driver picks up an old, confused man and offers him a lift home. It’ll be a journey they both may regret.

“In any given city, lives will intersect. In both good ways and bad.”

----------

(Very) Quick Author Q and A

What inspired you to write this story?
I’ve always loved reading psychological thriller novels, as well as behavioural science and criminal psychology books.(You might be able to guess that I’ve always had an interest in the darker side of human nature...)After writing my second novel I had loads of ideas that weren’t quite right for full-length novels, but which I thought would work well together as a short story mystery collection. I decided it would be interesting to write three linked short stories all set in the city of London and featuring people with malicious intentions.

Who will enjoy this book?
Anybody that likes forensic psychology fiction, suspenseful books, and sinister tales.

Oh, and anybody with psychotic tendencies who has ever worked on a helpline…

The Asylum

by Nathan Dylan Goodwin

The job presented to forensic genealogist, Morton Farrier, ought to have been simple and easy. But the surprise discovery of an additional marriage to his client’s father leads Morton on an enquiry, revolving around a mysterious death in the county asylum. Requiring his various investigative genealogical skills, Morton must work to unravel this complex eighty-year-old secret and finally reveal the truth to his client. This is the first story in the Morton Farrier genealogical crime mystery series. There are a further eight stories in this series:Hiding the PastThe Lost AncestorThe Orange LiliesThe America Ground The Spyglass FileThe Missing ManThe Suffragette’s SecretThe Wicked TradePraise for the Forensic Genealogist series:‘Hiding the Past is a suspenseful, fast-paced mystery novel, in which the hero is drawn into an intrigue that spans from World War II to the present, with twists and turns along the way. The writing is smooth and the story keeps moving along so that I found it difficult to put down’ The Archivist ‘The Lost Ancestor is fast-paced, not plodding, and does well building mystery… The author’s depictions of scenes and places are vivid; the characters are interesting and intriguing. In toggling back and forth from past to present, Goodwin shows how the deeds of long-dead ancestors are haunting their descendants’ GenealogyMagazine.com ‘The Orange Lilies sees Morton for once investigating his own tree (and about time too!). Moving smoothly between Christmas 1914 and Christmas 2014, the author weaves an intriguing tale with more than a few twists - several times I thought I'd figured it all out, but each time there was a surprise waiting in the next chapter... Thoroughly recommended - and I can't wait for the next novel’Lost Cousins‘As in the earlier novels, each chapter slips smoothly from past to present, revealing murderous events as the likeable Morton uncovers evidence in the present, while trying to solve the mystery of his own paternity. Packed once more with glorious detail of records familiar to family historians, The America Ground is a delightfully pacey read’ Family Tree‘Author Nathan Dylan Goodwin has given students of the Second World War, and avid family historians another great genealogical read in The Spyglass File’ Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter‘Nathan Dylan Goodwin has once again written a thrilling page turner in his latest book The Missing Man... Definitely a must read in the latest series of Morton Farrier, the Forensic Genealogist’Baytown Genealogy Society‘I can thoroughly recommend this book, which is a superior example of its genre. It is an ideal purchase for anyone with an interest in reading thrillers and in family history studies. I look forward to the next instalment of Morton Farrier’s quest!’Waltham Forest FHS

The Hollow by the Mere: The Mermaid of the Forest

by Geoffrey Peyton

In April 1990 I decided to leave the domestic hell of a relationship that saw my long time girlfriend throw me to the streets, in an attempt for her to find a better love elsewhere, and in doing so, she left me naturally homeless. I could have stayed with friends or relations, but those sort of agreements are always short lived, and I would only end up back at square one and ultimately on the streets again. Because of the summer being just around the corner I decided that I would like to spend a few weeks of camping at some rural spots for a while, just so that I could find time to mend a broken heart. But those weeks would turn into months, and soon I would be living the life of a Nomad where I would once again find love, but this time it would be with the most incredible girl that I had ever met. Little did I realise it at the time, but I was about to travel the wilderness countryside of rural England with my new found love, followed closely by various law enforcements that were on the trail of a killer that was my Becky. For six and a half months, Becky and I would make our own world amongst the wildlife and natural freedom of the English prairieland where we became persistent in escaping the clutches of the law until the inevitability game of cat and mouse reached its inevitable end. This is the true story of Allison Rebecca Mitchell; a real life bohemian girl who was a true mermaid of wildest England.
