by Natalie Hames

Life appears to be simple for the young Matthew Connolly as he grows up in middle class suburbia. A promising athlete and a gorgeous girlfriend whom he adores, he looks forward to attending sports college and pursuing his passion for running. That is, until one evening when his entire world including his dreams are turned upside down.

Now facing life at the Wayside Towers, one of the toughest estates in East London, it isn't long before his refusal to conform brings trouble to his family's door. As his brother's well-meaning involvement with the gang who controls the estate increases to dangerous proportions, Matthew is faced with a tough choice. Does he disclose everything he knows about the gang's illegal activities and risk his brother going to prison? Or does he seek out his own form of vigilante justice to set his brother free?

Book Description

For lovers of British Detective novels and authors such as Angela Marsons, Mel Sherratt and Martina Cole. The Towers takes you through a chain of typical East End crime events that moulded Matthew Connolly from a normal, law abiding teenager to eventually becoming DS Connolly in later books.

Set in London during the mid 90's at a time when illegal raves and drugs were rife, the storyline encompasses a mix of British noir and vigilante justice against the dark backdrop of high rise social housing. Highlighting the difficulties that the residents have to overcome on a daily basis including gangs of organised crime and protection rackets. Based purely on London gangster fiction the story highlights how even those of pure heart and good intentions can end up unwittingly involved in the murky black waters of organised crime, and equally how difficult it is to escape its grip.

The Case of the Mahjong Dragon: And other Russell Holmes Stories

by James McEwan

Author's site- jplmcewan.wordpress.com - contains additional information, photographs and character backgrounds, including Mrs Fergus's recipe.

“A brisk walk in the Botanic gardens before breakfast stimulates the mind for a good murder.”

The Case of the Mahjong Dragon and other stories, takes us into the world of criminal investigations by the Victorian private detective, Russell Holmes.

Murder, assassinations and the rescue of a woman incarcerated in an asylum are some of the challenges Russell Holmes must resolve. During his investigations he shows contempt for the judicial processes that conflicts with his sense of moral justice.

This collection was inspired by a Shortbread Story competition based on the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

“The Case of the Mahjong Dragon” received acclaim;

"Very engaging and well put together James. I have no problem at all with long short stories - particularly ones like this that keep you engrossed from beginning to end. When one can clearly visualize the scenes that are painted by a writer you know that it is good - and this was good.”

Spades: Short Film Script + Movie

by Mark Barkley

("Spades" download includes your own copy of "Stories From The Distant Planet" also by Mark Barkley. Just turn to inner sleeve after the titles and click on the download links.) Stuart and Claire have been married three years and in Claire’s eyes life is boring. She is a solicitor’s secretary who prides herself on being able to call a “spade a spade”, to tell the truth without embellishment. In her eyes, Stuart shows more enthusiasm for golf than events that matter in their relationship. There is one day of the year where the couple compete for each other’s affections by attempting to humiliate the other. The events of this short film open with Claire’s message on the refrigerator “TOMORROW IS..”. This is the day before that day. Spades was filmed in Brisbane on 2nd & 3rd December, 2000, with the second day riding up and down the Brisbane River in a hired ferry. It was short-listed in the top ten films presented for the third annual Courier Mail What’s On Short Cut Film Fest. It was screened at the Brisbane Powerhouse, Newfarm, with all other finalists on February 2nd, 2001.Interview with the AuthorQ - Why should I read a short film script? A – I think a good story is a good story. I try to reach out on an emotional level. And with this script, I don’t have to say it’s just a movie in your mind. There’s a link there to see the actual movie.Q - What inspired you to write Spades?A – Like my other plays, The Captains and The Kings, Sylvia Terry, A Kind of Belgium and Goodbye Melaleuca, I am fascinated by the dynamics within the family and in this case it involves a young married couple who like to play mind games with each other. Also I was very interested in portraying a crime occurring where there are several witnesses and by-standers watching but no-one wants to get involved. There is a detached nature to the society here where people feel comfortable making excuses for their own inactions. On the one hand, we have a woman on the river in the city night feeling unsafe and vulnerable. And on the other, there is a perceived betrayal of a victim to do the decent human thing to step in and help. Even though the problem was caused by the victim’s own irrational actions. But I wanted to do it in a way that involved humour. Also throw in drama, conflict and in a funny way, there is a love between Stuart and Claire.Q – How was the filming?A – It was the best experience ever. Few things compare with hiring a ferry and taking it on an adventure up and down the beautiful Brisbane River with the lights of the city night in the background. I was really fortunate enough to fall in with a group of people who filmed commercials for a living and they were such a tight little unit. I think my name was down on the film as director, but a lot of good I was. Basically I wrote the thing, paid the bills and kept everyone fed. But if you don’t do things like this, what’s the point of living? Q - So, why should readers give this work a try?A – I just think it would be one of the most enjoyable hours of your life. But one mustn’t assume anything.

Storm Log-0505: A gripping crime thriller with a breathtaking twist (The Detective Deans Mysteries Book 1)

by James D Mortain

"A truly outstanding first novel."

"Mo Hayder/Tess Gerritson esque but with an authenticity which puts it ahead of both... Definitely the best book I have read for a very long time."

"One of the best crime stories I have read which was not written by the likes of James Patterson."

The wait is almost over for Detective Andrew Deans; years of agony and despair hanging on the results of his wife’s fertility treatment. But a student is missing. And he must find her.

Compelled to leave his wife in Bath, Deans heads to North Devon, where he encounters Denise Moon, a medium, who exposes him to a psychic dimension he could never have imagined existed, in what soon becomes a murder hunt.

Gripped by inexplicable phenomena attributed to his own ‘paranormal awakening’ and alienated from all but his new mystical muse, Deans is closing in on a sophisticated killer...

...but all is not as it seems, and Deans’ future is about to change.

"This is an excellent police procedural novel, and that for the authors first published work! The basic idea behind the storyline is well thought out, the characters are very believable and it's very difficult to put down. I cannot wait for the next book in the series and would highly recommend this authors work to any reader of the genre."

“Andy Deans is a wonderful character that is fully developed and realistic. He struggles with his obligation to his family and to the victim of a horrific crime. He finds himself in a terrible situation. Add to that quality writing and a mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat, and you have this wonderful debut. Warning…if you don’t like cliffhangers, then you might be a bit disappointed, but it made me happy. Now I know that this won’t be the last time I see Andy Deans.”

"I have just finished reading this book, I just couldn't put it down. So easy to read, especially good as I'm dyslexic. Great story its gripping, full of twists and turns you really get to know the characters, just love Andy Deans. Can't wait for the next one it was left on a cliff hanger! So worth a read."

"I really enjoyed this book and thought it was a fabulous debut novel. The story flows well and the characters are interesting and real, especially Deans, the hero.
It is obvious that the author has experience as a police officer as all the police references seem authentic and there's some great witty dialogue.
All in all a great debut novel and we'll worth a read."

"This is a '3am' book....I didn't want to put it down to sleep. Now I'm waiting for the next installment because I couldn't not finish it! The curse of a good read... Book 2 please!!"

Crime and Punishment

by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Through the story of the brilliant but conflicted young Raskolnikov and the murder he commits, Fyodor Dostoyevsky explores the theme of redemption through suffering. “Crime and Punishment” put Dostoyevsky at the forefront of Russian writers when it appeared in 1866 and is now one of the most famous and influential novels in world literature. The poverty-stricken Raskolnikov, a talented student, devises a theory about extraordinary men being above the law, since in their brilliance they think “new thoughts” and so contribute to society. He then sets out to prove his theory by murdering a vile, cynical old pawnbroker and her sister. The act brings Raskolnikov into contact with his own buried conscience and with two characters — the deeply religious Sonia, who has endured great suffering, and Porfiry, the intelligent and discerning official who is charged with investigating the murder — both of whom compel Raskolnikov to feel the split in his nature. Dostoyevsky provides readers with a suspenseful, penetrating psychological analysis that goes beyond the crime — which in the course of the novel demands drastic punishment — to reveal something about the human condition: The more we intellectualize, the more imprisoned we become.

The Messiah Conspiracy is a fictional thriller which takes place in the field of genetics and human cloning.Hugely controversial, you will either love this book or hate it. For if Jason Dyke is right, his idea will soon change the world and shift the delicate balance of power from one nation to another.Jason’s idea is simple: In the genetics laboratory at Oxford University, he will clone Jesus Christ. But when the CIA finds out about his plan, the President of America realises that if the UK succeeds, the balance of power will shift from the USA to Europe. And he realises that the only way to stop this happening is for America to create its very own clone of Jesus Christ. The race is on...Whoever reads this book will never forget it. And they will ask….one of two questions:-1: Is it really possible?2: When will it happen? What people have been saying about this book:-Awesome Read: ‘I read many books and this one was one of the best I have read. I loved it and think I will read it more than twice. It was the kind of book that was almost impossible to put down. Very glad I bought it and would recommend it to everyone.’A Thumping Good 'Must' Read!: ‘ ‘Browsing the Kindle store for something to 'unwind' me, I chanced upon this excellent gem of a book. The characters are totally believable, able to deduce and thwart the plans of the Americans and British governments and to hide the true Messiah. A well thought out and researched book by the author, I was totally absorbed in it from start to finish. Believers & non-believers alike will enjoy this thumping good read!!! Far better than the Da Vinci Code by a country mile, I am certainly recommending this to all my many friends.’ ‘Well Written: ‘I was looking at a different book, Dan Brown Inferno and this title came up on a reviewers comments suggesting it to be worth a read. I have to agree, it is. Loved the idea of cloning Jesus and for me it was written well, had page turning elements to it but I was disappointed when it ended. In a nice way though! It does leave one hanging...’ Totally preposterous, but enthralling! : ‘I just happened on this book while browsing to find things to download to my Kindle. The premise of the book captured my interest so I duly downloaded it. And, I loved it! The story is utter nonsense, let's be honest - recreating Jesus Christ through cloning?! But, it is written in such an engaging manner that I found myself drawn in unwittingly. Mid-read, I actually broke my ankle and I found myself begging my family to bring my Kindle to the hospital so I could continue reading the book! I would recommend this highly to anyone else, with the proviso that they suspend belief and read it for what it is - a truly interesting and captivating piece of fiction!’ Book One of Two Parts: Please note that Book One continues seamlessly into and is concluded in Book Two. Daughter of the Don: A Detective Capella Crime Novel (Detective Capella Mystery Thriller Series Book 2)

by Jackie Holiday

Tony, Deirdre and Courtney are back in a fast paced tale of kidnapping, murder, love and betrayal.
While investigating the Nancy Miller case, Boston Detective Tony Capella had fallen for the petite blonde now sleeping beside him. He wasn’t sure if he believed in love at first sight, even so, their transcontinental flight was speeding them towards their wedding. What Tony didn’t know was that the troubles they thought they’d left behind, in America, were not.
Tony, Deirdre and Courtney are back in a fast paced tale of kidnapping, murder, love and betrayal. A journey that leads Tony from Venice to southern Italy, back to his roots, to the Land of the Witches… High in the mountains, a refuge for those persecuted for hundreds of years for their “gifts”, a land the Romans feared to tread…

Murder in the Land of the Witches is the second in the Murder series, following Murder in the E.R. They can be read singularly, however they are best experienced in sequence.

Adelina, perched on a rooftop and hidden by a chimney, pressed the button on her radio, “Anette? Rosaria? Come in.”
“Hello!” Vincenzo’s voice came out of the tiny speaker, loud and clear and with laughter in his voice he said, “I have your friends here with me. Why don’t you come and join us?”
Adelina growled, “Let them go.”
Vincenzo laughed, “Why would I do that? I am enjoying their company.”
“Let them go or I will burn this village to the ground.”
“This village is built of stone, as are its people. I’ll make a deal with you: Leave this village the way you came and I’ll send your girls out unmolested.”
Adelina clicked her radio, “Throw in the blonde named Deirdre and you have a deal.”
Vincenzo said, “I couldn’t do that. She’s family.”
A third voice broke in over the radio, “You can’t have her, Adelina. She’s mine.”
“Rico? I should have known. What are you doing here?”
“That wasn’t very nice of you, sister, derailing my train. You broke my leg.”
“Where are you Rico?”
“I’m here with Deirdre, in the church. Do what Vincenzo says, Adelina. Leave this village. The only thing here for you is death.”

Sherlock Holmes: The Truly Complete Collection (the 60 official stories + the 6 unofficial stories)

by Arthur Conan Doyle

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of deductive reasoning (somewhat mistakenly - see inductive reasoning) and astute observation to solve difficult cases. He is arguably the most famous fictional detective ever created, and is one of the best known and most universally recognizable literary characters in any genre.Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that featured Holmes. All but four stories were narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson, two having been narrated by Holmes himself, and two others written in the third person. The first two stories, short novels, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialized novels appeared almost right up to Conan Doyle's death in 1930. The stories cover a period from around 1878 up to 1903, with a final case in 1914.This collection contains all the 60 official and the 6 unofficial Sherlock Holmes stories - in total 66 works (the biggest and greatest Sherlock Holmes collection in the eBook world).

The Pain of Glass

by Giles Darling

A one-act play for eight actors. Set in a courtroom in 1878 in Victorian England, the play follows the trial of Mr. Jake Ashwood, a bladesmith's apprentice, for the murder of Mr. Vincent Vangilder at Mr. Vangilder's photographic studio. The counsels for the prosecution and for the defence examine and cross-examine the police constable first on the scene, Mr. Vangilder's neighbour, Mr. Ashwood's best friend, and Mr. Ashwood himself. After summations by the counsels and by the judge, the audience acts as jury to decide if Mr. Ashwood is guilty or not guilty. The play has two endings depending on the verdict reached. This is a 45 minute play suitable for a small group of school children or young actors to perform. It contains lots of references and information about ordinary lives from the late 1800s.
