Flying: Recreational, Sport

by Thompson Becks

t’s an honour to be in theeditor’s seat for this issue ofAustralian Flying while SteveHitchen takes a sabbatical. Igrew up reading this magazineand have writtenfor Australian Flying for anumber of years. Steve will beback, refreshed and ready for thenext issue. This issue of Australian Flyingtouches on the effects the newWestern Sydney Airport atBadgerys Creek may have on theBankstown and Camden basedtraining industry. As would be expected, viewson this subject range from“business as usual” to those whobelieve Western Sydney Airport’scommissioning will sound thedeath knell of both secondaryairports. But a few things are clear. Those who hold out hope ofBadgerys being cancelled aredreaming. The governmentjuggernaut has shifted up a gearand belief that Western SydneyAirport will be built is the newnorm. That doesn’t guarantee itwill be built on time or to budget, but it will be built. Those who are still pinningtheir hopes on RAAF BaseRichmond as an alternative willalso be disappointed. It looks likeeconomic common sense to beginoperating out of an airport withexisting infrastructure. But the Federal Governmentdepartment responsible forbuilding Badgerys is not going toignore its own 2013 report thatsaid Richmond would run out ofcapacity in the 2040s.Industry experts such asAirbus sales supremo JohnLeahy regularly point to figuresshowing world airliner passengernumbers doubling every 15 years.Richmond would delay, but notnegate, the need for Badgerys.

The First Ever English Olimpick Games

by Celia Haddon

Sporting events unite people and can have as much a political as a competitive motivation. This is certainly true of the ‘English Olimpick Games’, founded by Robert Dover. The Games were first played in 1612 on a small hill in the Cotswolds in the English countryside, and stood as a testament to the ordinary people of England in their fight against the Puritan movement. The Games ran almost continuously for more than two hundred years.Celia Haddon vividly captures the intensity and enthusiasm of those involved and how the camaraderie of sporting competition united an entire region at a time when division within England was gathering momentum and the seeds of civil war were being sown. Revived in the 1960s, the games are still immensely popular today and draw thousands to the original Dover Hill even year. The story also includes contemporary poetry in honour of the Games’ founder. The First Ever English Olimpick Games is a fascinating history of one of the most interesting, but quirky, events of the seventeenth century.Celia Haddon is a best-selling anthologist whose books have sold well over 1,000,000 copies worldwide. She was formerly the Daily Telegraph’s ‘pet columnist’ and agony aunt, and has written many books about domestic pets. She has also compiled the best-selling One Hundred Ways range. Celia answers cat care questions in Your Cat magazine and can be found on David the Dogman’s programme on Talk Radio Europe – most Saturdays at 10.00am CET. She works as a cat behaviour counsellor in the Oxfordshire area and runs the website www.catexpert.co.uk .

The Restless Compendium: Interdisciplinary Investigations of Rest and Its Opposites

by Felicity Callard

This book is open access under a CC BY license. This interdisciplinary book contains 22 essays and interventions on rest and restlessness, silence and noise, relaxation and work. It draws together approaches from artists, literary scholars, psychologists, activists, historians, geographers and sociologists who challenge assumptions about how rest operates across mind, bodies, and practices. Rest’s presence or absence affects everyone. Nevertheless, defining rest is problematic: both its meaning and what it feels like are affected by many socio-political, economic and cultural factors. The authors open up unexplored corners and experimental pathways into this complex topic, with contributions ranging from investigations of daydreaming and mindwandering, through histories of therapeutic relaxation and laziness, and creative-critical pieces on lullabies and the Sabbath, to experimental methods to measure aircraft noise and track somatic vigilance in urban space. The essays are grouped by scale of enquiry, into mind, body and practice, allowing readers to draw new connections across apparently distinct phenomena. The book will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines in the social sciences, life sciences, arts and humanities.

Gunslingers and Speed Demons – A History Of Green Bay Packers Quarterbacks 1919 to 1969

by Stanton Greene

Who needs another book about the Green Bay Packers? Hasn’t everything worth saying already been said? If you want detailed histories, they’re out there, jam packed with amusing anecdotes and excruciating detail of every fumble, stumble and touchdown in the history of the team. The glory and the infamy, the fame and the folly, it’s all been said a hundred times. But in all those books, no one has ever focused exclusively on the one aspect of this fabled team that shaped the course of NFL history more than any other franchise, the passing game. While other teams were sending Bronko Nagurski up the middle for three yards in what amounted to a rugby scrum, Curly Lambeau was plotting how to get the ball downfield by doing the unthinkable, throwing it. His tailback Arnie Herber was the first to pass for a thousand yards in a season in 1936 and Cecil Isbell the first to break two thousand in 1942. Lambeau effectively created the wide receiver position when he split Don Hutson out wide and sent him downfield on a fly pattern in 1935. In the process, Lambeau won six championships in sixteen years from 1929 to 1944.Bart Starr won five more championships in the sixties quarterbacking Vince Lombardi’s legendary teams, the last three championships riding more on Bart’s arm than the fabled running game. Since 1992, the Packers have continuously fielded two of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history in Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. Stretching back half a century to include Starr, Green Bay’s dominance at the position has been astonishing. This level of excellence at football’s most critical position extends even further into the early history of professional football. Before the creation of the T-formation and modern evolution of quarterbacking took place, the Packers were blessed with the presence of Charlie Mathys and Red Dunn behind center during the 1920s. Even during the lean years of the fifties, they had Tobin Rote. This is their story, in accomplishments on the field, in statistics and victories, with a sketch of their personal stories and a reference guide for football researchers. They’re all here, including Charlie Brackett, one of the first African-American quarterbacks in the modern NFL and Zeke Bratkowski, the ultimate relief pitcher who backed up Starr. Every Green Bay passer from 1919 to 1969 is here. This book is a celebration of that tradition and a tribute to the amazing men and athletes who made the Green Bay Packers a football power and passing leader over the last century. They’re all here, every Packer passer from 1919 to 1969, from Curly Lambeau to Bart Starr and receivers from Johnny Blood to Carroll Dale. So sit back and come along on an amazing journey that began nearly a hundred years ago. You’ll get all the numbers and personalities and the excitement season by season. The history is here and the stats to back it up. It’s designed as a fast, fun read, a jog through Packers history on the lightning feet of Hutson, Howton, Dowler, and a legion of fleet footed speed demons aided and abetted by a cocky bunch of gunslingers who started out wearing leather helmets and ended up the idol of millions. Few teams in any sport have been as entertaining as the Green Bay Packers over the last 98 years even when they were losing and this book proves it.Note: This book is included in the collected Omnibus edition combining Gunslingers and Speed Demons – A History Of Green Bay Packers Quarterbacks 1919 to 1969 and 1970 to 2016, available in Amazon Kindle and Paperback.Stanton Greene is the author of Lombardi’s Men, A Biography Of Every Green Bay Packer From 1959 To 1967, The Green Bay Packers - Dan Devine Years 1971-1974 and Brett Favre - Hall Of Fame, also available on Amazon Kindle & Paperback.

Football Fundamentals: Rules, Concepts, and Strategy (2019-2020 Season)

by Matthew England

Welcome to your ultimate roadmap to finally understanding professional football. There are many books out there that try to explain the basics of this brilliant and complex game, but something always seems to be lost in translation. It's true, football can be as clear as mud to the uninitiated fan. This creates a sea of ”dumbed down" explanations that only outline the shell of a beautifully constructed and deceptively intellectual American obsession. But it doesn't have to be that way!

This is a unique guide to football that provides a smorgasbord of topics to feast on, all in an easily digestible and readable tone. Every subject is covered, beginning from the question of what it is that makes football so popular, all the way through everybody's position and job on the field, and how everyone knows what to do. All condensed into ten concise and easy-to-read chapters, with a glossary at the end for reference. When you finish, you will be able to not only understand what's happening in a game, but maybe even clarify some things for some longtime fans. For people of all ages and levels of knowledge, this is exactly what you’ve been looking for to make sense of something you thought you would never quite understand.

At just about 100 pages and packed with over THIRTY colorful pictures and crystal clear diagrams, The Casual Guide to Football will turn even the most clueless outsiders into enlightened face-painting football fans, primed to debate any subject. Without taking a turn into a snooze fest of strategical microanalysis and rote memorization, you will emerge with a taste and grasp of football that no simplified “cheat sheet” or rushed summary could ever provide. In just an hour or two, get caught up on the game that everyone loves and find out what you’ve been missing. Right in time for the 2016 football season!

About the author: Matthew England is a professional football fan, and watches as many games as possible. Like you, he was once completely lost when there was football on TV, but gradually began to learn the game and has been hooked ever since. He spends most of his free time watching highlights of football games that, regrettably, occurred before he was born.
