Dementia guide for Carers and Care Providers

by Thames Valley Health Education England

If you care for someone with dementia, this guide is for you.

This guide offers practical information for anyone caring for a person with dementia, and has been developed in collaboration with healthcare professionals, educators and carers. The guide aims to support an understanding of the progressive nature of dementia and the challenges a person caring for someone with dementia may experience. Its focus is on living well with dementia.

It summarises many things you and the person you are caring for may need to think about. Some of the information here is important now. Other information will be useful later but is here for reference when you need it.

The guide contains six main sections:
- Understanding dementia: what it is, its symptoms and treatment
- Day-to-day-living: looking after the person with dementia, yourself, and the family
- Support: people and organisations who can help
- Legal and money: advice and sources of help
- Symptoms and behaviours: a look-up guide
- Medical terms: definitions of medical terms and abbreviations which medical professionals may use.

The guide has been developed by Health Education England Thames Valley, in partnership with the Centre for Information Design Research, University of Reading. The guide builds on the excellent work of Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Reading, who jointly developed the hard-copy ‘Dementia handbook for carers’. These organisations worked closely with a group of people who had first hand experience of caring for someone living with dementia. The original handbook was developed as part of a research project, funded by the 2012 Prime Minister’s Dementia Challenge, to improve delivery of information to carers and to give them better access to local health, social and voluntary support and services.

Quantum Mechanics: The WKB approximation: (the answers to my students' homework)

by Valentin Bogatu

Last year I had the opportunity to tutor a number of US college students in advanced physics subjects like electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, solid state physics and particle physics. All these physics subjects, and especially electrodynamics and quantum mechanics have something in common: the student is given homework after homework (sometimes for the same subject he has two different homework assignments in a single week) and thus he rarely has the time to read the entire chapter of the textbook that one needs to answer these homework questions.
What can I say, an applications chapter from QM (second part of QM) has about 30-50 pages that the student needs to read and to solve one homework assignment it takes like 7-10 pages of equations and explanations written. So I decided to write (for now) a few QM books, one book for each standard chapter in a textbook containing the homework that one of my students has last year (2015). I recommend these books as a help to fully understand all the material in QM textbook and as a guide in solving your own homework.

Sky and Telescope : The Essential Book of Astronomy

by Richard Jones

TO BORROW SOME WORDS from the title of a famous book and movie, the adventure of amateur astronomy really is a ‘never-ending story’. Ourcosmic vistas are essentially unlimited, even by aperture — for no matterwhat the size of our observing instrument(s), we can never hope to do morethan just scratch the surface of all the planetary, galactic and intergalacticpossibilities out there in the Universe.Which I guess is why many of us tend to specialise in one field oranother, whether that be hunting faint fuzzies or scanning for comets. In2018, there’ll pretty much be something for everyone. If you’re into theMoon, we’ll have two total lunar eclipses. If you’re into planets, we’ll havethe opposition of Mars in July (the best one in years). If you’re into deepsky observing, you will, of course, have multitudes of targets to keep youoccupied year-round. And we’re so lucky here in the Southern Hemisphere,to have galactic targets galore — both the central region of our galaxy inSagittarius, and the two Magellanic Clouds with their deep sky delightssuch as the Tarantula nebula. If you traditionally focus on one particular field of observationalastronomy, perhaps 2018 can be the year when you give some of the otherareas a go. There’s always something new to see.

by Grace Bell

Gut Flora Health
Do you struggle with bloating, constipation, or anxiety? Are you dealing with a chronic intestinal infection? Get the help you need from Healthy Gut: How to Restore Gut Balance, Boost Metabolism, and Heal Your Gut.

The typical human has 100 trillion microorganisms living in his or her gut. Recent studies have shown that these microbes, primarily bacteria, play a vital role in promoting and protecting physical and mental health. They can help your body stave off infections, expedite natural toxin removal processes and facilitate the breakdown of complex carbohydrates.

However, not all gut bacteria are good for the body. There are both good and bad bacteria that fight for space in your digestive tract. When the balance of these organisms is disrupted, a variety of health issues can occur, including obesity, anxiety, intestinal distress and depression.

This book will give you the latest information on how gut balance can be restored. By reading this book you'll learn:
• Why the gut is commonly referred to as the body's second brain
• What gut flora is and what causes imbalance in gut flora
• The symptoms and harmful effects of gut dysbiosis

You will also discover:
• How to choose the right foods for restoring gut balance
• What probiotics, prebiotics and fermented food are and how these help
• Healthy strategies for improving the health of your gut

Living Math: Seeing mathematics in every day life (and appreciating it more too).

by D. James Benton

A friend once told me that he couldn't remember the last time he had used calculus. How sad. I can't remember the last time I didn't use calculus. Mathematics isn't just esoteric busywork. It's the language of cause and effect–a description of why things work the way they do. Mathematics connects the dots in the picture that is the world around us. Understanding the mathematical relationships between objects and events will give you a whole different perspective, like seeing color in a world where others see only black and white. Join me on this adventure, in which I will take you on a tour of Living Math.

River Basin Development and Human Rights in Eastern Africa — A Policy Crossroads

by Claudia J. Carr

This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license. This book offers a devastating look at deeply flawed development processes driven by international finance, African governments and the global consulting industry. It examines major river basin development underway in the semi-arid borderlands of Ethiopia, Kenya and South Sudan and its disastrous human rights consequences for a half-million indigenous people. The volume traces the historical origins of Gibe III megadam construction along the Omo River in Ethiopia—in turn, enabling irrigation for commercial-scale agricultural development and causing radical reduction of downstream Omo and (Kenya's) Lake Turkana waters. Presenting case studies of indigenous Dasanech and northernmost Turkana livelihood systems and Gibe III linked impacts on them, the author predicts agropastoral and fishing economic collapse, region-wide hunger with exposure to disease epidemics, irreversible natural resource destruction and cross-border interethnic armed conflict spilling into South Sudan. The book identifies fundamental failings of government and development bank impact assessments, including their distortion or omission of mandated transboundary assessment, cumulative effects of the Gibe III dam and its linked Ethiopia-Kenya energy transmission 'highway' project, key hydrologic and human ecological characteristics, major earthquake threat in the dam region and widespread expropriation and political repression. Violations of internationally recognized human rights, especially by the Ethiopian government but also the Kenyan government, are extensive and on the increase—with collaboration by the development banks, in breach of their own internal operational procedures. A policy crossroads has now emerged. The author presents the alternative to the present looming catastrophe—consideration of development suspension in order to undertake genuinely independent transboundary assessment and a plan for continued development action within a human rights framework—forging a sustainable future for the indigenous peoples now directly threatened and for their respective eastern Africa states. Claudia Carr’s book is a treasure of detailed information gathered over many years concerning river basin development of the Omo River in Ethiopia and its impact on the peoples of the lower Omo Basin and the Lake Turkana region in Kenya. It contains numerous maps, charts, and photographs not previously available to the public. The book is highly critical of the environmental and human rights implications of the Omo River hydropower projects on both the local ethnic communities in Ethiopia and on the downstream Turkana in Kenya. David Shinn Former Ambassador to Ethiopia and to Burkina Faso Adjust Professor of International Affairs, The George Washington University, Washington D.C.

Gratitude Journal: Keep a Gratitude Journal and Turn Pain to Joy

by Shalu Sharma

The best way to stay grateful in your life is to start a gratitude journal. This is like an ordinary journal, but instead of writing all of your thoughts and feelings you are going to just write the things you are thankful for each day. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude has shown to be associated with several positive outcomes.

Here are a few of the many benefits of a keeping a gratitude journal:

Gratitude improves physical health. It is thought that those people who are more grateful have lesser aches and pains.

In addition to improving physical health, it improves physiological health. It’s like an antidote for negative emotions. It increases happiness and reduces depression. Just like spirituality, gratitude is also associated with well being.

It is also thought that it helps in reducing aggression. People who are more grateful show less antisocial behaviour and show more empathy to others.

People who are more grateful sleep better. Those spending a few minutes writing a gratitude journal everyday often feel more content in themselves and sleep better.

A study in the “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology” showed that soldiers showing more gratitude had reduced levels of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This shows that people with gratitude are able to cope better in life during stress.

A study reported by the University of Minnesota and the University of Florida showed that people writing a few lines of gratitude at the end of the day lowered their stress levels and they felt calmer at night.

Those writing a gratitude journal have more clarity about their lives and what they want and want to eliminate from their lives.

A recent study in the Spirituality in clinical practice (Wash D C) journal by Mills et al., showed that patients expressing more gratitude had lower levels of inflammatory biomarkers hence suggesting that gratitude could be a treatment for improving well being in heart failure patients.

How to maintain your gratitude journal:

Plan to write a few lines of gratitude every day preferably at night. But if can’t make it, don’t be too bogged down in writing every day, even every other day is fine.

Your gratitude journal does not have to be highly structured. To start off, you don’t have to be detailed, just a few lines of gratitude is enough.

Try to write about 5 things you are grateful for.

**This book is designed in a way that you can enter your gratitude each day of the year. Try to spend a few minutes at the end of the day (or any time you prefer) to enter your gratitude in the lines provided. Those with the kindle edition can simply use blank pieces of paper.
