Judaism and the Art of Paragliding: A Unique Spiritual Odyssey

by Rabbi David Samson

“I was in the middle of a discussion on the subject of "Progress" with a group of college students when a beautifully-colored parachute appeared in the sky. The bright orange canopy jutted out against the serene background of green mountains and blue sky. It struck me as rather fanciful, seeing a parachute in the middle of the Alps. It hovered over the valley, as if floating on a cloud of air, freed from all fetters of Mother Earth.”Thus begins JUDAISM AND THE ART OF PARAGLIDING, a Jerusalem rabbi’s unique spiritual odyssey that puts Judaism in an altogether refreshing new light. As strange as it may seem, paragliding and Judaism have many things in common. For one thing, they both teach you how to fly. Every person can achieve greater personal fulfillment and soaring new spiritual vistas. You don’t have to be a paraglider or a rabbi to do this. You just need to be willing to open yourself up to change, to jump off the proverbial cliff and “Go for it!”

The Way of Initiation or, How to Attain Knowledge of the Higher Worlds

by Rudolf Steiner

Rudolf Steiner was a philosopher, social thinker, architect, and esotericist. His philosophical work, which he termed spiritual science, sought to provide a connection between the cognitive path of Western philosophy and the inner and spiritual needs of the human being. In The Way of Initiation, Steiner details the exercises and moral qualities to be cultivated on the path to a conscious experience of ‘supersensible’ realities. His short but powerful book is intended as a guide for achieving spiritual vision.

The Story of Prophet Adam In Islam

by Muhammad Vandestra

Prophet Adam is believed to have been the first human being and (Prophet) on Earth, in Islam. Adam's role as the father of the human race is looked upon by Muslims with reverence. Muslims also refer to his wife, Hawa (Eve), as the "mother of mankind". Muslims see Prophet Adam as the first Muslim, as the Qur'an states that all the Prophets preached the same faith of Islam (Submission to One God). The Qur'an and hadith give the same account of the creation of Adam and Eve. Synthesizing the Qur'an with Sunni hadith can produce the following account. According to the Qur'an, when Allah (God) informed the angels that he was going to put a successor on Earth, they questioned whether the human would cause blood shed and damage, but he told them that he knew what they did not. He created Adam from clay and breathed life into him. Hadith add that he was named Adam after the clay he was made out of, or the skin (adim) of the earth. Returning to the Qur'an, when God asked all the angels to prostrate before Adam, they all obeyed, except Iblis (Lucifer). He said, "I am made from fire, when Adam is from clay. I am better than him. I am not going to prostrate before him."Sunni hadith say that while Adam was sleeping, God took a rib from him and from it he created Eve (Hawa); however, while the creation of Adam and Eve is referred to in the Qur'an, the exact method of creation is not specified. The Qur'an then says that God commanded that Adam and Eve not eat from one tree in the garden of Eden, but Iblis (Lucifer) was able to convince them to taste it. They then began to cover themselves because they now knew that they were naked. For this, God banished Adam and Eve to earth; non-canonical Sunni hadith say that fruits were turned to thorns and pregnancy became dangerous. Non-canonical Sunni hadith also say that Adam and Eve were cast down far apart, so that they had to search for each other and eventually met each other at Mount Arafat. In Islamic theology, it is not believed that Adam's sin is carried by all of his children. Hadith say that once Prophet Adam was on earth, God taught him how to plant seeds and bake bread. This was to become the way of all of Adam's children, Prophet Adam proceeded to live for about 1000 years.

Finding Jerusalem: Archaeology between Science and Ideology

by Katharina Galor

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press’s open access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Archaeological discoveries in Jerusalem capture worldwide attention in various media outlets. The continuing quest to discover the city’s physical remains is not simply an attempt to define Israel’s past or determine its historical legacy. In the context of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it is also an attempt to legitimate—or undercut—national claims to sovereignty. Bridging the ever-widening gap between popular coverage and specialized literature, Finding Jerusalem provides a comprehensive tour of the politics of archaeology in the city. Through a wide-ranging discussion of the material evidence, Katharina Galor illuminates the complex legal contexts and ethical precepts that underlie archaeological activity and the discourse of "cultural heritage" in Jerusalem. This book addresses the pressing need to disentangle historical documentation from the religious aspirations, social ambitions, and political commitments that shape its interpretation.

A "New Age" or "Messianic Age": How to Bring It Into Being

by Eric Heubeck

The Bible is an often obscure, cryptic, and esoteric book—many religious believers and non-believers can agree on that much. But what if the authors of the Bible were actually expressing opposition to the very obscurity and esotericism of their own writings, in their own writings? Furthermore, what if the ending of the “present age” and the arrival of the “Messianic Age” predicted by the Bible prophets could only ever occur once that entire cryptically symbolic “esoteric” or “prophetical” manner of religious discourse—one that is found in all traditional religions—had already been seriously questioned, confronted, and finally repudiated by humanity as a whole? As strange and surprising and paradoxical as these possibilities might sound, in this book Eric Heubeck carefully analyzes the contents of the Bible to reveal a great deal of compelling evidence arguing in favor of just such an hypothesis—far more than might at first be apparent. As you progress through the book, you will be amazed to watch as the “anti-esotericist message” hidden within Bible prophecy gradually takes shape before your eyes.

A Philosophy of Israel Education: A Relational Approach

by Barry Chazan

This book develops a new philosophy of Israel education. “Person-centered” Israel education is concerned with developing in individual learners the ability to understand and make rational, emotional, and ethical decisions about Israel, and about the challenges Israel regularly faces, whether they be existential, spiritual, democratic, humanitarian, national, etc. Chazan begins by laying out the terms of the conversation then examines the six-pronged theory of “person-centered” Israel education to outline the aims, content, pedagogy, and educators needed to implement this program. Finally, the author meditates on what a transformation from ethnic to ethical education might look like in this context and others. This book is Open Access under a CC-BY license.
