The Elements of Fiction: Plots and Scenes That Always Work

by Philip Wik

I wrote The Elements of Fiction to guide and improve my own writing of fiction. Anyone can pick up the nuts and bolts of writing without much effort. But mastering the art and architecture of writing is more difficult. In today’s publishing environment where a flood of e-books would eclipse the literature of Mark Twain and Dickens and hasten Hemingway’s drinking and suicide, it helps to define success strictly in personal rather than mercenary terms. We’re living in the golden age of publishing where anyone can publish anything they write. With these opportunities comes the challenge of competing with an ever increasing larger army of author/publishers. We have different reasons for writing. For me and for most people, writing fiction is a hobby. It’s no way to make money. Its delight lies in letting me define and explore my feelings and express my ideas through the lives of fictional beings. Wally Wood, the cartoonist, was looking for ways to make his art more dynamic and interesting and his productivity more efficient. He drew “22 Panels that Always Work.” His idea was to reduce the multiple ways to draw a cartoon narrative into twenty-two panes of layouts and compositional techniques. Examples of these panes are head shots, eye shots, silhouettes, profiles, and contrasts. I want to do the same thing by reducing the infinity of narratives to a handful of elements using examples from my fiction. This book has these essays. Four Plots That Always WorkSeven Themes That Always WorkFive Plotting Elements That Always WorkCreativity PromptsCadenceTensionPixar’s 22 Rules for Storytelling The Elements of Fiction also has a lengthy section with examples of writing from my own fiction.

by Louise Tondeur

Kick-start your writing habitThis book of writing prompts will kick-start your writing habit and challenge you to schedule your writing for 30 days. It’s more than a set of productivity tips for writers – it gives you writing briefs to follow until your writing habit is up and running. If you want to develop your writing skills, or learn to schedule regular writing time, or find out how to establish a writing habit, or if you need few or a whole bunch of writing prompts to get you going, you’re in the right place. Your 30 Day Writing ChallengeHere’s small steps time management in a nutshell: you can take any task, however daunting, and break it down into smaller and smaller steps until it becomes manageable. You can do small things in your everyday life to help you achieve what you want to. Sound good? This book applies the small steps approach to the writing life. If you want to write and publish a book, you need to find the time to do it. Using the 30 Day Writing Challenge, and a series of small steps, Find Time to Write shows you how. Learn how to show upNo-one ever sits down to write a 50,000 or 100,000 word novel or stage play or screenplay or non-fiction book. All writers of long projects do this: they write and redraft 1000 words 50 times (or 100 times). Or they write 500 words 100 times (or 200 times). Could you find the time to write 1000 words sometime this week, or could you write 250 words 4 times this week? If you can, you can finish the first draft of your book or play by this time next year. You don’t need to start with an idea. You need time and space to write, and you need to show up regularly. Find Time to Write will help you to show up.
