Don't Throw In the Trowel!: Vegetable Gardening Month by Month (Easy-Growing Gardening Series Book 1)

by Melinda R. Cordell

At last, help for home food gardeners. The simple, month-by-month layout of Don’t Throw in the Trowel will help gardeners grow a bounty of vegetables, fruits, and herbs. Grow luscious tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, melons, and more, and enjoy all the fresh produce (and give the surplus to family and friends) that your garden grows using these easy tips. Don’t Throw in the Trowel: A Month-by-Month Vegetable Gardening Guide is a fun read for every locavore who wants to cart tomatoes out of the garden by the wagonful.Even if you’ve never been a farmer or a gardener before, this vegetable gardening book covers everything you need to know to get started. Here you can find specific information about starting seeds, transplanting, mulching, organic fertilizers, dealing with pest and disease problems, compost, and of course, information about different vegetables and helpful advice on how to grow them. You can also find information about square foot gardening, beneficial insects (and insect pests), easy ways to keep weeds down, and ways to extent the growing season into the winter months using cold frames and floating row covers. What’s more, the methods used in this book are those to save time (and your poor back and joints). Gardening can hurt sometimes – as the author can attest after having been felled by a bad back during her horticulturing days. This book is full of ways to keep you from ending up the way she did. Many organic methods actually help make gardening easier. For instance, putting down a thick layer of mulch early in the year helps you keep weeds down, reduce watering, add organic matter to the soil, and keep the plants cool in the summer heat. Grow heirloom vegetables for a reliable, colorful crop – and you can keep using the seeds from these plants years after year. Most of all, this book also leads you on a month-by-month tour of the vegetable garden, so you can keep up with what needs to be done this month – and look ahead so you can be ready for next month. It’s always good to grow your own vegetables, especially with concerns about how far grocery store produce is shipped, concerns about the environment, and concerns about the future. But there’s also a new understanding of how good it is to get outside and work with plants, and how delicious those first sun-warmed tomatoes are, and how good a newly-picked strawberry tastes, and how astonished your toddler is when she pulls up her first carrot. There’s nothing on earth that can beat that. Review: "What a delightful read this is! This lady certainly knows her onions! There is a wealth of practical knowledge to be had in this book. Not having kept a veggie garden for a number of years, It both reminded things I already knew and informed me of many things I didn't. It is an ideal guide for both new-comers to the gardening world, as well as established gardeners." -- Ty from Wales

Biochar for Home Gardeners: A Guide to Producing, Charging, and Applying Biochar to Dramatically Improve Soil and Plant Health

by Jeff Fry

Building healthy soil to produce the most nutritious and most richly flavored food in our gardens is no small accomplishment, especially if gardens have challenging soil conditions to begin with. One powerful agricultural tool that can propel our soil health forwards in a hurry is biochar – a type of char used for agricultural purposes. This deceptively simple substance has unique structural and electrical properties that produce incredible benefits in our gardens. These include as much as doubling water-retention while improving water flow in sandy and clayey soils; swelling soil biology and activating its many functions; and improving nutrient holding-capacity by an eye-watering 20 times that of already healthy, loamy soil. If that were not enough, biochar is also essentially permanent, lasting thousands of years in the soil.Biochar for Home Gardeners details how to make biochar of excellent quality at home with rudimentary equipment; charge” biochar with nutrients, including how to use it to upgrade compost and make biochar bokashi (a ferment made with various household wastes); crush biochar and apply it to soils for maximum benefit;and, additionally, how to use biochar in animal shelters and feed to improve hygiene and animal health.Biochar is perhaps best known as the magic ingredient that an ancient South American civilization used to transform their hopeless clay ground into one of the richest soils on the planet. If it can do this, properly made and applied biochar is sure to improve gardeners’ yields and the nutritional content of their crops together with heightening the beloved garden-grown aroma and flavor.

Aquaponics: A Comprehensive Guide and the Best Ways To Grow Aquaponic Plants (2 in 1 Bundle)

by Sheila Brown

2 Books in 1:Aquaponics: A Comprehensive Guide to Aquaponic GardeningAquaponics: The Best Ways to Grow Aquaponic Plants Book 1: Master a System that Can Feed You, Your Family, and Even Give You More than Enough to Sell Afterwards if You WantThis book contains information on my experiences on aquaponics. I've included the successes and the failures so you can learn about this amazing method to grow your own food. Popular writer T. L. Campbell said that “you're not an aquaponics farmer until you've killed fish,” well you can be, but if you're going to learn to set up a system bigger than a bucket and a few goldfish this is true. You'll kill plants and fish; you'll have days when you wonder why you've sunk so much money into something that is driving you nuts (especially those darned nitrogen strips). But at the end of the day, you'll master a system that can feed you, your family, and even give you more than enough to sell afterwards if you want. Within this book, you'll find the answers to these questions and more. Just some of the questions and topics covered includeWhy I Chose AquaponicsIn Depth: The Nitrogen Cycle & AquaponicsDesigning Your SystemBefore You StartGetting The Bacteria RightChoosing Living CreaturesTroubleshooting and MaintenanceAnd much more!Like most comprehensive books we'll start with the basics and go from there. I've tried to make this information make sense even if you've no previous science or agricultural knowledge. Even if you've never so much as had a goldfish you can still master aquaponics. Book 2: Discover The Best Ways To Grow Aquaponic PlantsAquaponics is a great way to grow fish and food together, but the biggest question for most people is how to grow. Houston Soil Drainage Problems: Drainage Problems in the Houston Area

by Anne Wilkinson

Houston Soil Drainage Problems - Drainage Problems in the Houston AreaBook Preview:When it comes to Houston soil drainage problems, we’ve just about got them all. Water is an essential soil ingredient for plant growth. However, too little or too much water will result in the decline or death of your garden plants.Other than having the consistency of lake bottom “muck,” Houston soils stay wet for several reasons:•Compaction•A limiting subsurface layer, like clay•High water tableWhen soils retain too much water as a result of over-watering, flooding from an occasional hurricane or monsoon, or restrict water movement through them, roots suffocate, are susceptible to disease and will eventually die.Symptoms of excess water include:•Yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis)•Defoliation (leaves drop off)•Marginal scorching•Dwarfed foliage•DiebackAny time plants are subject to stress, such as under-watering as well as over-watering, mother nature calls in an army of “pests” to put the plants out of their misery. Healthy plants naturally repel non-beneficial insects as well as diseases.OxygenOxygen is another essential ingredient in healthy soils. Roots absorb oxygen from the soil and expel carbon dioxide back into the spaces between soil particles not filled with water. Without this normal exchange of O2 and CO2, plant roots die.A good soil that drains well is 50% soil solids, 25% water and 25% oxygen. Within the air space in soil, you’ll find large pores and small pores. Planning a Vegetable Garden: The Important Thing in Planning a Vegetable Garden

by Lorena Slater

Planning a Vegetable Garden - The Important Thing in Planning a Vegetable GardenHere is a preview:The Real Scoop on Planning a Vegetable GardenGarden grown vegetables are superior to grocery store produce by anyone’s standard, both in freshness and flavor. You can go out to the garden and pick your vegetables just before mealtime, at the peak of ripeness. You’ll save money and your family and lucky neighbors will love the results. Here’s a quick primer on the basics of planning a vegetable garden. If you’ve never grown your own vegetables, give it a try!Start small. It’s easy to let your enthusiasm run wild, wanting to plant all of your favorites. The problem arises when you find yourself overwhelmed by the time required to maintain a large garden. Get one growing season under your belt to get a good idea of the tasks involved and the time you need to nurture your babies. A good size for the first-timer is about 4′ x 8′. A patio or balcony garden is easily managed, even when filled to capacity. When planning a vegetable garden, your first decisions are location, layout and type of bed. Most vegetables require a southern exposure with at least eight hours of sunlight, so plan accordingly. Raised beds are easy to work and drain well. Lining the bottom of the frame with wire mesh provides protection from burrowing critters. You have a little more initial expense in constructing the frame and filling the bed, but in the long run, you’ll have less work and better results. If you choose to dig the ground directly, double-digging to a depth of 24 inches is recommended for the most friable soil and best drainage. If you’re growing in pots, use oak half-barrels or similar sized containers. Consult your nursery worker for veggie varieties that grow well in pots. And READ this book, if you want more!Search result for this book:preen vegetable garden weed preventer, vegetable garden accessories, vegetable garden accessories outdoor, vegetable garden animal protection, vegetable garden animal repellent, vegetable garden ant killer, vegetable garden basket, vegetable garden bed, vegetable garden book, vegetable garden box, vegetable garden bug spray, vegetable garden cages, vegetable garden canopy, vegetable garden care, vegetable garden containers, vegetable garden cover, vegetable garden decor, vegetable garden decorations, vegetable garden drip irrigation kit, vegetable garden drip kit, vegetable garden dust, vegetable garden edging, vegetable garden electric fence, vegetable garden elevated, vegetable garden enclosure, vegetable garden essentials, vegetable garden fence, vegetable garden fencing, vegetable garden fertilizer, vegetable garden food, vegetable garden for beginners, vegetable garden gate, vegetable garden gifts, vegetable garden ground cover, vegetable garden grub control, vegetable garden grub killer, vegetable garden harvesting basket, vegetable garden herbicide, vegetable garden holder, vegetable garden hoops, vegetable garden hose, vegetable garden insect control, vegetable garden insect killer, vegetable garden insect repellent, vegetable garden insecticide, vegetable garden irrigation kit, vegetable garden journal, vegetable garden kids, vegetable garden kit, vegetable garden kit 8x8,vegetable garden kit irrigation, vegetable garden kit kids, vegetable garden label stakes, vegetable garden labels, vegetable garden landscape fabric, vegetable garden light, vegetable garden liner, vegetable garden manure, vegetable garden markers, vegetable garden mesh, vegetable garden metal markers, vegetable garden mulch, vegetable garden name stakes, vegetable garden net, vegetable garden net cover, vegetable garden netting, vegetable garden nutrients, vegetable garden on wheels, vegetable garden organic fertilizer, vegetable garden organic weed preventer, vegetable garden organizer, vegetable garden ornaments, vegetable garden pest control, vegetable garden pesticide, vegetable garden planter box, vegetable garden planters, vegetable garden pots

Bonsai Master Guide: How to grow a bonsai tree: 2018: Bonsai Beginner's Guide

by Hitomi Nakamura

Bonsai is a Japanese word that is made from a combination of two words, ‘bon’ and ‘sai’ in which ‘bon’ is a thin bowl or dish and ‘sai’ is a plant or any tree that can be planted. Therefore, Bonsai can be defined as an art of growing woody plants or trees in containers. The trees are grown from regular seeds but certain techniques are applied as the tree grows to ‘dwarf’ it to give it a miniature look.
