SPELLBOUND: An Epic Time Travel Fantasy (Young Adults)

by M. I. Speer

During a tour of an Irish castle, Caitlin, an American student on spring break encounters the legendary Jared Kellan, a 13th-century warrior said to have been cast in a spell by an evil sorcerer. Both are unaware she is a modern day blood relative and exact likeness of Kayla, the woman Jared believes betrayed his family.

Later that night, bent on vengeance, Jared thinks his magical amulet has led him to Kayla. As he stands on Caitlin's hotel balcony on the stormy night, the glass door opens and he enters her room while she sleeps. As Caitlin wakes, she and Jared engage in a struggle that activates the amulet’s protective powers which transport them back to medieval times and into a world on the brink of war against the evil sorcerer.

Barely dressed in her night clothes, barefoot and cold, and armed only with her pepper spray, Caitlin makes a startling discovery as she finds herself in a violent world at the mercy of the handsome but vengeful stranger. Glad for her archery and self-defense lessons in college, Caitlin soon learns it takes more than a pretty face to survive plus a bit of magic in a time without laws or justice where only the strong survive. The Real History of Football.: The Soccer Game.

by Manikandan Govindan

The rules of association football were codified in England by the Football Association in 1863 and the name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other forms of football played at the time, specifically rugby football. The first written "reference to the inflated ball used in the game" was in the mid-14th century: "Þe heued fro þe body went, Als it were a foteballe". The Online Etymology Dictionary states that the "rules of the game" were made in 1848, before the "split off in 1863". The term soccer comes from a slang or jocular abbreviation of the word "association", with the suffix "-er" appended to it. The word soccer (which arrived at its final form in 1895) was first recorded in 1889 in the earlier form of socca.Within the English-speaking world, association football is now usually called "football" in the United Kingdom and mainly "soccer" in Canada and the United States. People in countries where other codes of football are prevalent (Australia, Ireland, Wales, South Africa and New Zealand) may use either term, although national associations in Australia and New Zealand now primarily use "football" for the formal name.

Frankenstein

by Mary Shelley

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is the original 1818 'Uncensored' Edition of Frankenstein as first published anonymously in 1818. This original version is much more true to the spirit of the author's original intentions than the heavily revised 1831 edition, edited by Shelley, in part, because of pressure to make the story more conservative. Many scholars prefer the 1818 text to the more common 1831 edition.Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel written by Mary Shelley about a creature produced by an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was nineteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty-one. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823.Shelley had travelled in the region of Geneva, where much of the story takes place, and the topics of galvanism and other similar occult ideas were themes of conversation among her companions, particularly her future husband, Percy Shelley. The storyline emerged from a dream. Mary, Percy, Lord Byron, and John Polidori decided to have a competition to see who could write the best horror story. After thinking for weeks about what her possible storyline could be, Shelley dreamt about a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had made. She then wrote Frankenstein.

Uleyli- The Princess & Pirate (A Junior Graphic Novel): Based on the True Story of Florida's Pocahontas

by G. C. Daniels

Uleyli is a princess–but she isn’t happy with all that comes with it. She’d rather daydream and create art than learn how to rule her people. When a Spanish boy, Juan Ortiz, is captured by Ulelyi’s father, she intervenes on his behalf and begins to plot her escape from her village. As she dreams of a new life in Cuba, Uleyli encounters a series of problems that put her dreams at risk. To solve her problems she will need to use the power of her creativity to help save her new friend, her village, and herself. This graphic novel was inspired by the true story of a young Native American woman, Ulele, known as Florida’s Pocahontas. The beautiful full-color illustrations and simple text paint a picture of life in 16th-century Native American villages in what is now the southeastern United States. This is a story celebrating Ulele’s creativity and non-violent heroism.Perfect for young fans of graphic novels (ages 9 – 12) who are interested in learning more about US history.
