Elvis Under The Covers

by Michael Madden

In August 1977 the world stopped when Elvis Presley passed away. As we acknowledge the 40th anniversary of his passing, it is appropriate to remember the full extent of the man’s legacy, a legacy that continues to grow. Elvis Under The Covers explores his influence through the artists that have recorded his most often covered original songs. These are Can't Help Falling In Love. In The Ghetto, Don't Be Cruel, Heartbreak Hotel and Jailhouse Rock. Glam rock legend Suzi Quatro has provided the foreword in which she describes the times that Elvis Presley touched her life, and when she touched his. Mike Sanchez explains the influence that The King had on his life and his career. There are also personal contributions from many of the artists featured in the book, including Eddi Reader, Mary Coughlan, Chris Spedding, Wanda Jackson, Kenny Vance, Al Kooper, Tanya Tucker and Stella Parton. These musicians, singers, actors and performers cover the whole spectrum of musical entertainment, from fame to obscurity, from number 1 hit makers to the occasionally bizarre, from cartoons to classics, and from religion to rock and roll. It is not often that a book can legitimately mention Bob Dylan, Andy Williams and the members of The Beatles alongside Bugs Bunny, Stephen King and a Camembert cheese (the reader will have to search for that one!) However, on a journey through this legacy there are many unusual connections, including a tenuous link between Jona Lewie and Howlin’ Wolf! The one thing that binds them all together, the essence of the journey that they have all chosen to take, is the elixir that is Elvis Presley.

Cicada Spring: A Novel

by Christian Galacar

On a warm May evening in the spring of 1979, the people of Heartsridge, Massachusetts, are living the American dream. Families are gathered for barbecues. Kids are playing in front yards. Gardens are being kept. Meanwhile, Kara Price stumbles home through the woods, raped and beaten, her life shattered by a wicked act of violence, perpetrated by one of the town’s most beloved and public figures.

Surrounding Kara is a cast of compelling and nefarious characters—a violent-tempered mayor who can do no wrong in the eyes of the town, a sheriff bound by the rules and plagued by a guilty conscience, a father bent on revenge, a serial killer in the midst of an identity crisis. And at the center of it all there's Kara, who just wants to move on with her life and forget everything that happened to her. But how can she do that when everyone thinks she is a liar who is only out for attention? With plot and emotion braided together by a careful hand, this haunted group of people all acting on behalf of their own interests begs the question: How far would you go to protect your own?

The Big Book of Vintage Sheet Music Covers: A Kindle Coffee Table Book

by Douglas DeLong

HUNDREDS OF DAZZLING VINTAGE SHEET MUSIC COVERS FROM 1896-1923 DIGITALLY RESTORED TO THEIR ORIGINAL GLORY!After the American Civil War people were looking for ways to entertain themselves at home, and as a result, piano sales went through the roof, with more than 25,000 pianos being sold every year. By 1887 more than half a million young people were studying the piano. The immense interest in piano music generated a need for sheet music of the most popular songs of the time, and by 1910, thirty million sheet music copies were being sold every year. At the same time, advances in printing technology allowed publishers to print high-quality art images on their sheet music covers, which acted as an advertisement for the sheet music. Publishers discovered that people would buy sheet music just because they liked the cover, even if they weren’t familiar with the song. Displayed on a piano, the sheet music cover functioned as decorative art when not being used to play a song. The sheet music covers of this period employed a variety of subject matter, but images of beautiful women proved to be the most popular, and the art created for these covers proved to be one of the highest forms of commercial art produced during that period of time. It also created a great opportunity for talented artists, providing them with a substantial and lucrative market for their art. The covers in this book have been organized according to ten different themes and include a large selection of ragtime songs, which was enjoying immense popularity during this time. Other themes include songs about soldiers and songs about mothers. One chapter includes a large selection of covers that feature beautiful women. But my personal favorite is the collection of songs with zany names, like ”I’ve Got a Pain in My Sawdust.”In the back of this ebook you’ll find an Index of Songs, with many of the titles linked to a YouTube page where you can listen to the song.

The Big Book of Vintage Advertising Posters - Volume Two: A Kindle Coffee Table Book

by Douglas DeLong

ENJOY HUNDREDS OF GORGEOUS DIGITALLY-ENHANCED VINTAGE ADVERTISING POSTERS!Art Lovers will Love these Stunning Vintage Posters!(This Kindle Coffee Table Book is the second volume of a three-volume set of vintage hand-painted advertising posters. The entire series consists of over 500 high-resolution images that have been digitally-enhanced in order to give them maximum impact. Most posters are from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.)Once upon a time advertising was art. Before radio and television became the primary mediums for advertisers in the middle of the 20th century, posters dominated the advertising landscape around the world. Beautiful, hand-painted posters were created by some of the world’s most prominent artists - men like Alphonse Mucha and Jules Charet mass-produced thousands of colorful posters inviting consumers to purchase a wide variety of goods and services, attend special events or travel to exotic locales.Lithography, the printing process that made it possible to mass-produce posters, was invented in 1798, but it wasn’t until 1880 that the process was finally able to reliably produce posters quickly and cheaply. This breakthrough was due to an innovative process created by Jules Charet called the stone lithographic process, which allowed artists to achieve every color in the rainbow. Artists were suddenly able to utilize their superb artistry and remarkable craftsmanship to economically create gorgeous works of art on paper posters and a brand-new art form was born.As the poster craze exploded around the world in the 1890s, artists took the opportunity to celebrate the unique cultural institutions of their own country in their art. So, for example, French posters featured a lot of cafes and cabarets, while Italian posters focused on opera and fashion.Art Nouveau, the elegant style of art that flourished in the 20-year period from 1890 to 1910 and was popularized by Alphonse Mucha’s posters, eventually lost its luster with the void being filled by a young Italian artist named Leonetto Cappiello. Instead of utilizing the finely detailed work that characterized Art Nouveau, Cappiello focused on creating a single image, usually humorous or somewhat bizarre. He wanted to create an image that would quickly capture a person’s attention as they walked along a busy street. His innovation in poster design was so important that today he is often referred to as "the father of modern advertising."
