House: Residential Architecture and Design

by Innocent Brighton

There is a golden trifecta when it comesto producing outstanding architecture:you need a trusting client, a talentedarchitect and a committed builder.I’m often reminded of the value of thistrifecta when visiting houses acrossAustralia and meeting the architects, clients and (sometimes) builders behindthem, as it gives me insight into thestrength of the bond that can be formedduring the process of designing andconstructing a home. For this issue’s cover project,Silver Street House by EHDO, the owner“lovingly considered and handmade”the building himself over a long periodof time and the relationship between thearchitect and the owner-builder becamemore like an old friendship. Althoughthis is a unique collaboration, there issomething to be said for enjoying theprocess of designing your own homeand embracing the relationships thatcan grow along the way.

Over five-thousand kilometres were covered in the process of viewing these ruined cities, from the north at Progreso, to the west at Campeche, east to Chetumal and Playa del Carmen, and south at the border of Guatemala and Belize. Anecdotes and history make a wonderful combination in this professionally written account of modern day risk taking. History of the Later Roman Empire

by J.b. Bury

THE first of these two volumes might be entitled the “German Conquest of Western Europe,” and the second the “Age of Justinian.” The first covers more than one hundred and twenty years, the second somewhat less than fifty. This disparity is a striking illustration of the fact that perspective and proportion are unavoidably lost in an attempt to tell the story of any considerable period of ancient or early medieval history as fully as our sources allow. Perspective can be preserved only in an outline. The fifth century was one of the most critical periods in the history of Europe. It was crammed with events of great moment, and the changes which it witnessed transformed Europe more radically than any set of political events that have happened since. At that time hundreds of people were writing abundantly on all kinds of subjects, and many of their writings have survived; but among these there is no history of contemporary events, and the story has had to be pieced together from fragments, jejune chronicles, incidental references in poets, rhetoricians, and theologians. Inscribed stones which supply so much information for the first four centuries of the Roman Empire are rare. Nowhere, since the time of Alexander the Great, do we feel so strongly that the meagreness of the sources flouts the magnitude of the events.             Although we know little of the details of the process by which the western provinces of the Empire became German kingdoms, one fact stands out. The change of masters was not the result of anything that could be called a cataclysm. The German peoples, who were much fewer in numbers than is often imagined, at first settled in the provinces as dependents, and a change which meant virtually conquest was disguised for a shorter or longer time by their recognition of the nominal rights of the Emperor. Britain, of which we know less than of any other part of the Empire at this period, seems to have been the only exception to this rule. The consequence was that the immense revolution was accomplished with far less violence and upheaval than might have been expected. This is the leading fact which it is the chief duty of the historian to make clear.

The Expansion of Europe 1642-1789

by Wilbur Abbott

WHEN in the last months of 1648 was signed the great peace which brought to an end the Thirty Years' War and with it the mediaeval polity which it finally destroyed; as the army of diplomats whose work it was dispersed to their respective governments, the awe-inspiring mass of documents which formed the fruit of their long labors might have led men to believe that Europe would hasten to enjoy the peace which she so needed and which her people for the most part so greatly desired. But whatever hopes of quiet were entertained, were already far on the way to disappointment; for the Europe to which the diplomats returned was even then altered or altering before their eyes and already shaping itself for new conflict. Scarcely a state of any consequence prepared to recruit its resources by the arts of peace; scarcely a royal house but faced a crisis in its fortunes; scarcely a people but was stirring in unrest or already engaged in revolution. So far from ushering in a period of peaceful progress the Westphalian treaties became the starting point for new and bloody rivalries...

Wood Review: Five Essential Handplanes

by Simon Dan

Around the same time I heard about Manapan Furniture, an excitingcollaboration led by Mark White between Melbourne designersand Arnhem Land makers who are creating a range of high-endcontemporary furniture, see p.76.Meeting and talking with Melbourne designer maker Damien Wright acouple of months ago gave me insight into his work, and I also learnthow years ago he spent time in NT working with Aboriginal makers, and still maintains a strong connection with them.At a time when Australians, first and more recent, are restating historicalrecords and how those are being publicly acknowledged and celebrated,it’s interesting to see how connections such as the ones touched on inthis issue are strengthening the identity of our making culture.

Housing: Residential Architecture and Design

by Julius Walkler

The indoor–outdoor connection is one of the most discussed and desirable aspects of residential architecture. We’ve also become indoor plant obsessed. But what are the reasons behind this desire to be connected with nature? “Biophilia”is a term first used by psychologist Erich Fromm in 1964 andpopularized by biologist Edward O. Wilson in his 1984 bookBiophilia. In basic terms it denotes the love of nature and livingthings, stemming from our biology and genetics. Related to thisis stress reduction theory, proposing that natural environmentsencourage recovery from stress, while urban built environmentscan actually hinder the recovery process. Until recently there hasn’tbeen strong scientific evidence that nature is good for your mentalhealth – but that is now changing, and what is known as “biophilicdesign” is being used to respond to these studies.Good residential design facilitates a meaningful relationshipwith nature, rather than just giving a tokenistic nod to the indoor–outdoor “seamless connection” trend. A project in this issue thatachieves this beautifully is A Pavilion Between Trees by BranchStudio Architects (page 46). It began with a design scheme thatworked around a silver birch, a desert ash and an heirloom peartree already established on the site. The experience of the completedextension is focused on a connection with nature, with a seriesof platforms that gradually raise the floor level and create a subtlydifferent relationship to the landscape in each section. At Welsh and Major Architects’ Annandale House (page 96),an unprogrammed space at the centre of the home is open to thesky, with a semi-mature fiddle-leaf fig planted in a hole in the slab.Natural light and fresh air come from above, but this space can becovered by a mechanically powered sliding glass roof. At GibbonStreet by Cavill Architects (page 38), the planted courtyard andgreen roof give the impression that the home might eventuallybe enveloped by nature and the sitting room is positioned to offer“a genuinely external experience.” Waterloo House by AnthonyGill Architects (page 82) overcomes a seemingly impossiblechallenge by making a connection with the outdoors within thetight constraints of a terrace house, including an outdoor bathroomcomplete with a basin and vanity. Similarly, an outdoor shower iscontained within a Japanese-style courtyard at B.E Architecture’sArmadale Residence (page 122), allowing the experience of a naturalenvironment to become part of the daily routine.
