The Diary of Lt.Col. John Withers: The Civil War in His Own Hand. October 1860-December 1862

by LtCol. John Withers

The American Civil War, more commonly known as the Civil War, raged from 1861 to 1865. This bloody conflict was conducted to maintain the Union of the United States and prevent the formation of an independent country known as the Confederate States of America.

In 1861 the United States consisted of 34 states. Seven Southern slave states seceded from the United States to form the Confederacy. Eventually the Confederacy included eleven states, but they claimed thirteen, plus additional western territories.

The primary issue behind the southern states seceding from the Union was that of slavery. The North desired to abolish slavery, the South wanted to keep it.

April 12, 1861, marked the beginning of hostilities when Southern forces fire upon Fort S...

The True Story of Andersonville Prison: A Defense of Major Henry Wirz

by James Madison Page

During the Civil War, James Madison Page was a prisoner in different places in the South. Seven months of that time was spent at Andersonville. While there he became well acquainted with Major Wirz, or Captain Wirz, as he then ranked. Page takes the stand that Captain Wirz was unjustly held responsible for the hardship and mortality of Andersonville. It was his belief that the Federal authorities must share the blame for these things with the Confederates, since they well knew the inability of the Confederates to meet the reasonable wants of their prisoners of war, as they lacked a supply for their own needs, and since the Federal authorities failed to exercise a humane policy in the exchange of those captured in battle. The writer, "with malice toward none and charity for all," denies cons...

The Prison of Democracy: Race, Leavenworth, and the Culture of Law

by Sara M. Benson

At publication date, a free ebook version of this title will be available through Luminos, University of California Press’s Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Built in the 1890s at the center of the nation, Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary was designed specifically to be a replica of the US Capitol Building. But why? The Prison of Democracy explains the political significance of a prison built to mimic one of America’s monuments to democracy. Locating Leavenworth in memory, history, and law, the prison geographically sits at the borders of Indian Territory (1825–1854) and Bleeding Kansas (1854–1864), both sites of contestation over slavery and freedom. Author Sara M. Benson argues that Leavenworth reshaped the design of punishment in America...

Berkeley 1967-2017 Summer of Love (Visit Berkeley)

by Michael A. Estrada

There are moments in time when a word or thought has such power it changes history; a generation so involved in the moment it becomes unstoppable; a spiritual awakening so profound that its very conception shatters perceptions, halts the world and makes people from all nations take notice. And for Berkeley, this moment can be traced to the 1960s. The Summer of Love 1967, centered in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district, turned Berkeley into the epicenter of the counterculture movement. It was a tumultuous and often violent period marked by the origins of the Free Speech Movement beginning with the May 1960 House Un-American Activities Committee hearings at San Francisco City Hall, the emergence of the counterculture, the anti-war protests, the rise of the Women’s Movement, and endin...

The 1865 Fall of Richmond in Pictures

by Charles A Mills

Captured in pictures. The last death agonies of the Confederacy: By late afternoon it seemed that all who could leave the city were stampeding. Commissary stores were thrown open, and their hoarded contents distributed to eager crowds. As the day wore on the scenes at the various government stores changed from the fairly orderly distribution of supplies to rank plundering. Whiskey stocks were broken into and the streets ran with liquor. Factories, arsenals and mills were ordered destroyed, some were blown up, and others were burned. The fires were soon out of control. Admiral Raphael Semmes wrote, “The Tredegar Iron Works were on fire, and continual explosions of loaded shell stored there were taking place....The population was in a great state of alarm.” Admiral Semmes ...

Homicide in American Fiction, 1798–1860: A Study in Social Values

Homicide has many social and psychological implications that vary from culture to culture and which change as people accept new ideas concerning guilt, responsibility, and the causes of crime. A study of attitudes toward homicide is therefore a method of examining social values in a specific setting. Homicide in American Fiction, 1798–1860 is the first book to contrast psychological assumptions of imaginative writers with certain social and intellectual currents in an attempt to integrate social attitudes toward such diverse subjects as human evil, moral responsibility, criminal insanity, social causes of crime, dueling, lynching, the "unwritten law" of a husband’s revenge, and capital punishment. In addition to works of literary distinction by Cooper, Hawthorne, Irving, and Poe, among...

Daughters of the Revolution and Their Times (Illustrated Edition): – 1776 - A Historical Romance

by Charles Carleton Coffin

Many volumes have been written setting forth the patriotism and heroism of the fathers of the Republic, but the devotion of the mothers and daughters has received far less attention.
