Hypocalcaemia, Hypoparathyroidism and Vitamin D Deficiency

by Sics Editore

It must be ensured that the patient does not have pseudohypocalcaemia caused by hypoalbuminaemia. When serum albumin is reduced by 10 g/l, serum/plasma calcium is reduced by 0.2 mmol/l. This explains why severe illness and malnutrition are often associated with mild asymptomatic hypocalcaemia; in these cases the concentration of serum/plasma ionized calcium remains normal and should be used for reference. Many laboratories report the albumin-corrected calcium concentration. The cause of hypocalcaemia should be determined before replacement therapy is initiated. The concentration of calcium is regulated by parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D, calcitonin and phosphate. The reference values for calcium vary between different laboratories and by age (a typical reference range of plasma calciu...

Governance for Drought Resilience: Land and Water Drought Management in Europe

by Hans Bressers

This book presents the findings of a team of scientists and practitioners who have been working on the project “Benefits of Governance in Drought Adaptation” (in short: the DROP project), which is included in the European Union’s INTERREG IVB NWE programme. The DROP governance team developed a Governance Assessment Tool (GAT), which allows the governance setting of a given region for planning and realizing drought adaptation measures to be assessed. Based on this assessment, recommendations can be developed for regional water authorities concerning how to operate most effectively towards increased drought resilience in this context. The GAT has been applied to six regions in Northwest Europe: Twente and Salland in the Netherlands, Eifel-Ruhr in Germany, Brittany in France, Somerset i...

Cognitive Supervision for Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Laser Surgery (Springer Theses)

by Loris Fichera

This thesis lays the groundwork for the automaticsupervision of the laser incision process, which aims to complement surgeons’perception of the state of tissues and enhance their control over laserincisions. The research problem is formulated as the estimation of variablesthat are representative of the state of tissues during laser cutting. Priorresearch in this area leveraged numerical computation methods that bear a highcomputational cost and are not straightforward to use in a surgical setting. This book proposes a novel solution to this problem, using models inspired bythe ability of experienced surgeons to perform precise and clean laser cutting. It shows that these new models, which were extracted from experimental datausing statistical learning techniques, are straightforward to use...

Indigenous Life Projects and Extractivism: Ethnographies from South America (Approaches to Social Inequality and Difference)

by Cecilie Vindal Ødegaard

Exploring indigenous life projects in encounters with extractivism, the present open access volume discusses how current turbulences actualise questions of indigeneity, difference and ontological dynamics in the Andes and Amazonia. While studies of extractivism in South America often focus on wider national and international politics, this contribution instead provides ethnographic explorations of indigenous politics, perspectives and worlds, revealing loss and suffering as well as creative strategies to mediate the extralocal. Seeking to avoid conceptual imperialism or the imposition of exogenous categories, the chapters are grounded in the respective authors’ long-standing field research. The authors examine the reactions (from resistance to accommodation), consequences (from anticipat...

From Physics To Life: A journey to the infinitesimally small and back

Presenting the key principles of quantum mechanics in a brand new light and combining them with newer ideas about quantum gravity, we can understand what nature is trying to tell us about life and the meaning of the universe. The book takes us on a trip to the infinitesimally small. In the first part of the journey, we get to the atomic scales of magnitude, which are the realm of quantum mechanics. There, we learn about a number of disconcerting phenomena, which upset your understanding of life and nature. We make the acqu...

Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways. Persons susceptible to asthma get symptoms associated with the inflammation. The symptoms usually include an airway constriction of variable degree, which is relieved spontaneously or with treatment. Common symptoms include dyspnoea, wheezing and prolonged cough. The inflammation increases the sensitivity of the airways to many irritants. Auscultation of the lungs, spirometry, bronchodilatation test, peak expiratory flow (PEF) monitoring and chest x-ray are the basic examinations. Quantum Mechanics. The Hydrogen Atom: (a simple, yet complete approach)

by Valentin Bogatu

The Hydrogen atom (one proton and one electron) is the simplest system that is studied in Quantum Mechanics. There are many online and offline references for the Hydrogen atom, yet if you want a simple description none of these will satisfy you. Some of them are way to complicated (with many computations), others are missing some parts. Keeping the explanations as simplest as possible this book is a complete reference for the Hydrogen atom (writing the corresponding Schroedinger equation, decoupling it, solving different parts, graphical representations of the radial and angular parts of the wavefunction and of their associated probabilities)....

This open access book is the first comprehensive overview of maritime or marine spatial planning. Countries across the globe are beginning to implement maritime spatial plans; however the authors of this collection have identified several key questions that are emerging from this growing body of MSP experience. This book actively engages with the problems encapsulated in these questions, and explores possible solutions.Situated at the intersection between theory and practice, the volume draws together several strands of interdisciplinar...
