Create an Engaging Syllabus: A Concise, 7-Step Guide for Professors

by Norman Eng

How do I write a syllabus? What kind of tone should it set? Isn’t there a template I can just use? These are some of the questions many professors—especially if you’re NEW—want answered. You just want the specifics, minus the jargon. A syllabus that captivates students and gets them excited about the course you teach. The problem is, students think our course syllabus is like a contract. And who can blame them for thinking that way, with its hefty requirements, policies, objectives, and outcomes? We forget the syllabus is often the first thing students see about us, so it can really affect the way they approach your course. Yet most of us never really learned how to create one, especially one that ENGAGES. We adapt old versions written by some retired instructor years ago. It’s time we found a better way. CREATE AN ENGAGING SYLLABUS: A Concise, 7-Step Guide for Professors gives you the roadmap you’ve always wanted. Here’s what it covers: - The right way to think of your syllabus (HINT: It’s not a contract)- How to make your tone and language more inviting- How to instantly captivate your students’ attention (HINT: avoid the formal "Course Description" language)- How to deal with the “boring” but required stuff (i.e., policies, outcomes, etc.)- How to leverage the way Millennials read and absorb information- Powerful ways to capture visual appeal Most importantly, this book includes TEMPLATES. Two of them. You get a simply-designed, text-only version—for those who don’t want to mess around. You also get a more graphic version, for that extra WOW factor. Both will get students in the right frame of mind. Written by Norman Eng—bestselling author of TEACHING COLLEGE: The Ultimate Guide to Lecturing, Presenting, and Engaging Students)—CREATE AN ENGAGING SYLLABUS takes a routine topic and gives it the makeover professors have been asking for. Find out the 7 simple steps to a winning syllabus in this power-packed, 62-paged book.

The People's Victory: Stories from the Front Lines in the Fight for Marriage Equality

by Marriage Equality USA and Christine Allen

In 1996 a small group of everyday Americans, fed up with being told by allies that marriage equality was the "wrong" issue, and under attack by opponents who said their love and families were "not worthy" of the same institution, launched what would become the nation's oldest and largest grassroots organization for equal marriage rights. The People's Victory is a collection of their stories of how through education and advocacy, success and set back, everyday individuals across the country found their voice to resist, fight, and eventually bring equal marriage rights to an entire nation. The People's Victory shares deeply moving personal testimonies of men and women who lost their spouses to death, only to lose everything they've built for decades; parents who became activists to save their children; allies who acted to honor loved ones they have lost; and many, many more. Their stories are an inspirational map to anyone who has felt passionate about an issue, but questioned if their individual contribution could make a difference. In fact, that is the only way the people have ever been victorious.

Continuing Actions: A Warrior's Guide to Coming Home

by Dan Sheehan and Jonathan Shay

Gold Medal Winner: 2015 Nautilus Awards, "Personal Growth" categoryBronze Medal Winner:  2016 IPPY Awards (Independent Publisher Book Awards) "Psychology" category Modern warriors are extremely well prepared to go into battle. But we don't know anything about how to come home. The challenges of coming home after combat have always been part of a warrior's journey. Unfortunately, the modern warrior's preparation for combat does not include any information about how to overcome them--or even that they exist at all. This gap in our preparation leaves us open to predictable, and avoidable, injuries when we return home that can be just as lethal as actual combat. Closing this gap is what Continuing Actions is all about.Drawing on the works of mental health professionals, scholars, and other veterans, Continuing Actions shows that warriors have always had to face challenges when coming home, explains how these challenges impact us on multiple levels, and how our training and preparation have left us, and our families, exposed to needless suffering. It goes farther than just identifying the problem, however, and offers pragmatic solutions for how each individual veteran can overcome this gap in their training on their own. With a Foreword by Dr. Jonathan Shay, bestselling author and esteemed leader in PTSD research and treatment, Continuing Actions is a guidebook for veterans and active duty alike. It is a reconnaissance into the most misunderstood aspect of the modern warrior's experience: the challenges of coming home.

Frankenstein and the Critics: Includes unabridged FRANKENSTEIN 1818

by Various Artists

“It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld my man completed ..."The summer of 1816 was by all accounts a cold and wet one. After the April 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia, global temperatures dropped and a rainy, monsoon-like drizzle settled in over Northern Europe. In a holiday villa on the shores of Lake Geneva, a young English poet and his lover, the guests of another poet, discouraged from outdoor pursuits, sat discussing the callousness of nature and speculating about the fashionable subject of "galvanism." Was it possible to reanimate a corpse? The villa was Byron's. The other poet was Shelley. His fiancée, 19-year-old Mary Shelley (née Godwin), was in post-partum distress.   Byron, inspired by a book of supernatural tales, suggested that each member of the party should write a ghost story to pass the time.Initially, Mary Shelley didn’t feel up to Byron's challenge. Then, she said, she had a dream about a scientist who "galvanizes" life from the bones he finds in charnel houses: "I saw – with shut eyes, but acute mental vision – I saw the pale student of unhallowed arts kneeling beside the thing he had put together. I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine, show signs of life, and stir with an uneasy, half vital motion."Young Mary took the prize, with her tale of eccentric scientist Victor Frankenstein, who creates a grotesque creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Frankenstein became a bestseller and a Gothic classic that still resonates with readers two centuries later. But with like many great works of art, Frankenstein was initially misunderstood. The first reviews were decidedly mixed. An anonymous review in The Literary Panorama and National Register published June 1, 1818 dismissed Shelley’s work as ‘a feeble imitation of one that was very popular in its day.’ Other periodicals were kinder. Writing in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine on 20 March 1818, Walter Scott praised the unusual Gothic Romance as a “tale, though wild in incident, is written in plain and forcible English, without exhibiting that mixture of hyperbolical Germanisms with which tales of wonder are usually told.”Frankenstein and the Critics presents a selection of the most prominent reviews from the time of Frankenstein’s publication. Also included is Mary Shelley’s uncensored 1818 text often labeled ‘Frankenstein 1818’ presented in its unabridged entirety. This is the original, 1818 text. In 1831, the more traditionally first "popular" edition in one volume appeared. This version of the story was heavily revised by Mary Shelley who was under pressure to make the story more conservative, and included a new, longer preface by her, presenting a somewhat embellished version of the genesis of the story. This edition tends to be the one most widely read now but many scholars prefer the 1818 text, arguing that it preserves the spirit of Shelley's original publication.

My Journey through Grief into Grace

by Kathleen B. Duncan

"5:47 am August 13, 2013. There was a knock on the door. I looked out the window and saw a cop car. Not good. Never a good thing to have a cop at your door. Worse this time of day.

I grabbed my bathrobe; Ron got up to get dressed.

Officer Wiggins had seen the news on the police wire and volunteered to come to our home with the news. He knew our family. His son had graduated from high school just a few months before with our son Peter.

Officer Wiggins came in and told us our 20-year-old, Andrew, had been in a car wreck. Our son was dead."

The Accident killed her son and four of his friends. Her life was changed forever that day.

After The Accident, Kathleen began to write about her grief. She wrote about her Journey through Grief into Grace. Her posts were honest and raw.

Here is her story. Her story of how faith in a living, loving God helped her heal after the death of her son.

Written in a diary format, "My Journey through Grace into Grace" gives readers insight into the emotional ups and downs of grief after the death of a child. It will also give you hope that healing, even after such a tragedy, is available for all.

Guide 01: Personal Motivation and Circumstance (The Five-Year Entrepreneur Series)

by Dom Moorhouse

This guide is the first in the Five-Year Entrepreneur series (www.dommoorhouse.com) designed for the managing owner(s) of a professional service business. Indeed, this is especially for you even if you are just keen to explore the idea of setting up your own such firm.Such firms are primarily business-to-business ventures and involve the marketing, selling and dispensing of a ‘professional service’. The definition is, however, broad and covers a panoply of service types – from business consulting, accounting, law, advertising, web design, architecture, engineering, recruitment, financial services, marketing, public relations, research and so on. Generally speaking, if your firm harnesses the talents of skilled, knowledgeable individuals to provide advice and support to other businesses then this guide series is for you. The series is especially focused on leaders who are committed to starting/growing such businesses in order to derive – or at least provide an option for – a personal wealth creation point in the future. This first guide explores the topic of ‘Personal Motivation and Circumstance’ and what it personally takes to be a successful entrepreneur. If you are considering starting-up your own business, you are right to dwell on this topic. No other feature is going to be more fundamental in determining the success, or otherwise, of your business than your attitude and ‘basket’ of personal values, capabilities, prior experiences and motivations. This guide describes the ten elements of the ‘Complete Entrepreneur’ as well as exploring the related questions of start-up timing and your attitude towards people, work and risk.Professional service businesses have unique challenges of their own; this guide ensures you have thought through these aspects also prior to setting out. It also provokes your consideration of matters that will determine whether this is a journey you will enjoy … for example, how will the ‘Important Others’ in your life be impacted, how do you best sustain yourself through the trials and tribulations of company growth? Ultimately, however, if you have the beginnings of an entrepreneurial idea, this guide will leave you motivated for the journey ahead. The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, as Narrated by Himself

by Josiah Henson

Josiah Henson (June 15, 1789 – May 5, 1883) was an author, abolitionist, and minister. Born into slavery in Charles County, Maryland, he escaped to Upper Canada (now Ontario) in 1830, and founded a settlement and laborer's school for other fugitive slaves at Dawn, near Dresden in Kent County. Henson's autobiography, The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, as Narrated by Himself (1849), is widely believed to have inspired the character of the fugitive slave, George Harris, in Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852).

Real Estate Short Sales: insider secrets revealed (master the game - real estate)

by Zahie Werber and Michael Martirena

As a real-estate investor or broker, you may already know the term ‘short sale’. You might even have benefitted from such sales already. If not, you’ve come to the right place!

Simply put, the definition of a short sale involves selling a home for less money than the total of any remaining balance on the mortgage plus any liens on the property. Sound like a deal? It can be a good one if implemented correctly. But, it’s important to realize that just because it’s a short sale, this does not necessarily mean there is a profit to be made; you’re not always going to get the margins or spreads needed in order to create a profit or gain. That is why it is critical to know when to walk away from deals, because walking away can save you many potential loses.

In this book we reveal many of the unspoken secrets of the trade regarding short sales. You will get an in-depth understanding of the process and who the key players are in the game. We will explain a few secrets that can help you get a better deal on your next real-estate investment, and we’ll also speak about things that can and will lower the uncertainty factor in playing this game.

One of Michael’s expertise is short sales. He will teach you what to do and what not to do, allowing you to earn money. Therefore, this book will teach you the tips to successfully navigate and do things right the first time around. Not only will it provide you with all you’ll need to know regarding short sales, as our way of saying thank you for purchasing our book we’ve included a free gift; a ‘Complete Checklist’ PDF containing absolutely all the information you’ll need when selling a property.

~ Michael and Zahie believe their true purpose is to teach and share their personal experiences with the world, especially the world of real-estate, in hope of saving ‘newbie’ investors, advanced investors and experts the time, energy and stress that are often paramount in the industry. They’re ‘paying it forward’ in hope it will help others in the industry to avoid the mishaps they’ve experienced.

Michael Martirena is a licensed Real-Estate Broker in the state of Florida, U.S.A. He purchased, rehabbed and sold his first property straight out of college, and has been in the real-estate industry ever since. Michael is an expert in the field of doing short sales. He has tutored many investors and closed many deals himself. The advice he shares in this area comes from years of experience, and his tips are most-valuable in the real-estate industry. Michael and Zahie’s first deal together was a short sale when they got started years ago.

Zahie Werber earned his B.Sc. degree as an electrical engineer at the age of nineteen. He was born into an Infrastructure Contracting family firm (est. 1956), and was the second generation to help it to grow. Zahie is an active real-estate investor and holds an MBA in business management, majoring in marketing. Through his books Zahie simplifies complex matters into a series of basic steps that produce motivation for action, change, and result in a breakthrough in life and business.

BELIEVE & KNOW (LifeSword Bible study Book 2)

by Cathy Bryant

From the author of the beloved Miller's Creek novels (Christian fiction), comes this Bible study guide about how to protect and defend Christian faith. Each human being--on their journey and search for truth--must at some point reflect on life and answer important questions. Why am I here? Is there life beyond life as I now know it? How did the universe and man come into existence, and how does the answer affect me? In addition, each person must then make life or death decisions on the truth they uncover. This book addresses hard questions that accompany the search for truth. It also gives answers to win the lost and win back defectors. The Bible study guide is written for: those who struggle with faith, many times because of skewed perceptions or even anger; those who profess faith in the unseen, but find it difficult to live out; and finally those whose faith is strong, but who need information to combat the arguments and questions of others. This book addresses the following:The Danger of Unbelief - Why faith is truly a life or death matter.Proof of Intelligent Design - Evidence that exists for a Supreme Being. The Problem of Evil - The number one hang-up people have with God.Proof of Jesus as God - Jesus always claimed to be God.Proof of God's Love for Mankind - The sacrificial act all time hinges on.God's Plan for Us to Believe and Know - We don't have to wander in darkness, chaos, and confusion.Faith Matters - The case for faith in an unbelieving world. This Bible study guide was written as a companion to the spiritual theme of sharing and defending faith found in CROSSROADS, Christian fiction and the sixth stand-alone book in the Miller's Creek novels.WHAT READERS ARE SAYING:"Whether you are searching, a new believer, or someone who has been walking with the Lord for awhile, this Bible study is for you. I found much meat and food for thought as I worked through this Bible Study. Cathy's insights and applications were most helpful. If you are looking for a Bible study to help you grow or to help you share, this is for you!!! Highly recommend this study to one and all.""This Bible study is good for both non-believers and believers. For Christians, the topics covered in this book will challenge us to be more faith-living and prepare us to explain our beliefs to those searching. The section, Bible Study Suggestions, provides excellent directions for getting the most from your reading.""I would encourage you to get and read this book. Study it. Use it to help you reach out to those who don’t know the Lord.""Do you know what you believe and why you believe it? Can you defend your beliefs if someone questions you? We are admonished by Paul to always be ready to answer for our faith, but I know many times I am intimidated to stand. In this Bible study, Cathy Bryant gives us the tools that can help us be prepared to explain our faith in God. Backed by Scripture and accompanied with thought provoking questions, this study will help you get grounded in the Word so you can talk to others about your own personal walk with God, the creator of the universe."CATEGORIESReligionBiblical GuidesBible StudiesBible Study GuidesEducationWomen's Bible StudiesWomen's Bible Study GuidesBible Study for WomenBible Studies for WomenFaith Bible StudyBible Study on the Defense of FaithBible Study for Christian LivingBible Study for Small GroupsBible Studies for CouplesHow To Share Your FaithHow To Defend Your FaithHow To Believe in GodHow To Find Assurance for Your FaithHow To Live Out Your FaithChristian Bible StudyChristian Bible Study for WomenChristian Bible Study for Small GroupsChristian Bible Study BooksApologeticsSpiritual WarfareSpiritual GrowthSocial IssuesPersonal GrowthWomen's Christian Living

The Sensible Guide to a Career in Project Management in 2016

by Te Wu

Project management has been growing rapidly for the past decades. Yet, until now, aspiring and practicing project managers struggle to find a relevant and timely guide on planning and developing careers in project management. In this comprehensive guide, the book provides the latest information on the state of the profession. In addition, the author proposed a career ladder with seven major steps as professionals start at the beginning and reaching the executive role, a stretch of twenty or more years.

This book contains five chapters and is updated with the latest development and statistics. Below is a summary of the topics and the key questions addressed in the book.

Chapter 1: Introduction

The first chapter provides an introduction to project management, as well as program and portfolio management. It addresses these five questions:
A. What are projects, programs, and portfolios?
B. What is project, program, and portfolio management?
C. Why project management?
D. How are projects different than operations?
E. Is project management a science or an art?

Chapter 2: Career in Project Management

This chapter presents the challenges and opportunities of managing projects and whether it is the right profession for you. This chapter focuses on these three questions:
A. What are the challenges of project management?
B. What are the rewards of being a project manager?
C. Is project management right for you?

Chapter 3: Project Management Institute

Project Management Institute (PMI) is the world’s largest project management professional organization dedicated to the advancement of the project management profession. For practitioners, it is a vital organization, not only for network and learning, but also for career development. PMI currently offers eight certifications designed for project professionals of all levels. Questions addressed in this chapter are as follows:
A. What are PMI’s certifications?
B. What are the qualifications for each certification? Which one should you pursue?
C. What do you need to do to maintain certifications?
D. Are there other project management standards and certifications?

Chapter 4: Project Management Career Ladder

This chapter presents a general project management career ladder at three broad levels across seven titles. In addition, the chapter outlines 25 essential skills organized into three skills groups. Finally, I have included my thoughts on the skills, qualifications, and career development and certification strategies. The four questions discussed in this chapter are as follows:
A. What does the project management career ladder look like?
B. What are the core skills required to be an effective project managers?
C. How does these skills map to the career ladder?
D. Are there the core skills and qualification guidelines?

Chapter 5: War Stories

Synthesizing the content and strategies from the first four chapters, this chapter takes a different approach – storytelling. By presenting four stories from four individuals who are at different level of the project management profession, I hope to highlight selective project management concerns.

The 2016 Edition contains a number of updates, including a discussion of other project management certifications, update to PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements, PMI statistics and chapters, and the new talent triangle.

The Unquenchable Life: What the Apostles Teach Us About Victorious Christian Living

by Russell M. Stendal

The book of Acts presents the epic explosion of the gospel after the Lord Jesus Christ returned to heaven to sit at the right hand of God. The apostles received the Holy Spirit with real, visible, and powerful results. There was none of today's straining to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, or of "practicing" the gifts. Instead, the move of the Holy Spirit was a vivid demonstration of great power and wonders, and people were forced to either embrace the gospel or reject it completely. So clearly was the line being drawn, that once, only a single sentence was uttered by the apostle Paul before he was struck on the mouth by his enemy. So sure was the apostle Paul of his calling that not only did he not fear death for the sake of Christ, but he actually pressed forward into situations where death was the predicted result. In this study of Acts chapters 8 through 28, Russell Stendal analyzes the prerequisites and condition of the apostles before this all could take place. He expounds on the need to have a genuinely clean heart in order to do what the Lord wants to do that is over and above what seems right to us. Stendal provides the definition of names of people and places to reveal deeper truths behind all that was taking place, and he clarifies often-controversial portions of this important book of the Bible. Are you ready to have the line drawn in the sand of your life?About the AuthorRussell Stendal, a former hostage of Colombian rebels, is a lifelong missionary to that same group in the jungles of Colombia. He is an influential friend to military and government leaders in Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, and the United States. Russell’s ministry shares the gospel via twelve radio stations, hundreds of thousands of Bibles, books, and movies distributed through airplane parachute drops, and numerous speaking engagements for groups of leaders, prisoners, and individuals. Russell goes wherever the Lord leads, whether it’s to speak with a president or to go deep into the jungle to help an individual in trouble. He has witnessed thousands commit their lives to Christ.

The Heart Behind the Stone: Develop a Giant Slaying Heart

by Rick Hepler

The men of Israel were called the armies of the living God. The Israelite forefathers had seen the mighty actions of God delivering them from Egyptian bondage, caring for them in the wilderness, defeating their enemies and lead them to the Promise land. Yet this day this army would run and hide because they had forgotten the power of their God. These Israelites knew about God but did not retain Him in their hearts and trust Him to do the impossible.

God was looking for a man after His own heart who would keep all of His commandments. He found this man, a poor and lightly esteemed shepherd boy named David, the son of Jesse the Bethlehemite. David would be the King of Israel and a leader of God's people.

This book follows David preparing to be a man of God. He faces many obstacles that God's people may face today. David unexpectedly chooses to fight the giant Goliath, whom the men of Israel, including their king Saul were running and hiding from each day.

David shows his courage and trust in God to deliver him. David's "cause" was more important to him than his fear of dying. You will read why David was chosen over his brothers to be king. Also you will be shown how Davis learned to love God with all his heart, soul and strength.

As Christians we have what seems like giants to face in our world every day. We are reminded of our giant problems when we awake in the morning and before we go to sleep at night. We also run and hide from our giants. These giants may taunt us day and night for years unless we face them like David.

Have Christians run and hid from these giants like the men of Israel? Can you tell if we have? Look at the present state of immorality in our Nation today. Is immorality worse today than it was 40 years ago? Some of the Christians are participants in this immorality.

Is there not a "cause" for us today? Look at your children or grandchildren when they are asleep at night. Are they precious to you? You want the best for them. You want them to have a good education, have a good career making a good income so they can provide for their families, but this is all temporary. How much time do you spend helping them prepare for eternity. Do you teach them how to have a faith like David? Do you have a faith like David? If they have a faith like yours can they withstand the trials the world may place on Christians in years to come? If you don't teach them they will be taught the opposite of God by the world.

Is it important for your children and grandchildren to go to heaven someday for all eternity? Is this not our "cause"? If we hide from this, the Devil will slip in and entice our children with the sinful pleasures of the world causing them to forget God. The Devil wants to steal ,by his deception, the abundant life that Christ has offered. He wants your children to someday die lost? But this does not have to happen. We all can defeat evil with God's help. This book shows how to do it. Enjoy reading!

Life in Christ Vol 2: Lessons from Our Lord's Miracles and Parables

by Charles H. Spurgeon

He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed and walk. - John 5:11bOriginal title: Miracles and Parables of Our Lord. Volume 2A deep, inspiring, and often challenging study of the Lord Jesus Christ's miracles and parables. Men who were led by the hand or groped their way along the wall to reach Jesus were touched by his finger and went home without a guide, rejoicing that Jesus Christ had opened their eyes. Jesus is still able to perform such miracles. And, with the power of the Holy Spirit, his Word will be expounded and we’ll watch for the signs to follow, expecting to see them at once. Why shouldn’t those who read this be blessed with the light of heaven? This is my heart's inmost desire. I can’t put fine words together. I’ve never studied speech. In fact, my heart loathes the very thought of intentionally speaking with fine words when souls are in danger of eternal separation from God. No, I work to speak straight to your hearts and consciences, and if there is anyone with faith to receive, God will bless them with fresh revelation. - Charles H. Spurgeon In this second volume, Charles H. Spurgeon expounds in marvelous detail on the following miracles:•Jesus visits the pool by Bethesda and heals the crippled man (John 5) •Jesus heals a blind man with spit and clay (John 9) About the AuthorCharles Haddon (C. H.) Spurgeon (1834-1892) was a British Baptist preacher. He started preaching at age 17, and quickly became famous. He is still known as the “Prince of Preachers,” and frequently had more than 10,000 people present to hear him preach at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. His sermons were printed in newspapers, translated into many languages, and published in many books.

Nostalgia: God's Broken Heart

by Eric Gilmour

God's heart is broken as His people look to other things for satisfaction, joy and peace. He is not willing to let them go. He relays His anguish through Hosea, the broken hearted prophet. In this prophetic book lies the core speaking of God to the Western world. Wrought with divine nostalgia, God calls His people to solitude with Him that He may whisper into their ears and be their deliverance and all satisfying lover. Though others cried, "injustice" Hosea cries, "You don't love me anymore."

2013 Grace Award Nominee (Reader-Nominated)

"...Karen Kingsbury meets Nicholas Sparks." ~Amazon reviewer

Interview With The Author

Q - Why write stories about a small fictional town in Texas?

A - I grew up in a small Texas town, so I know all the pros and cons and absolute blessings of living in a place like Miller's Creek--a laid-back, down-home lifestyle, wonderful folks, and even a few who think it's their job to know everyone's personal business. The stories were designed to give readers an experience of feeling like they've arrived at a place that feels like home.

Although the Miller's Creek novels are technically classified as romances, they're really so much more: southern fiction, women's fiction (though I have a surprisingly high amount of men readers), suspense, comedy, drama, even a little bit of psychological thriller thrown in to keep readers turning pages. And each of the books carry a distinctive spiritual theme as well as an overall journey theme for the series. (Hence words like roads, path, way, pilgrimage, and bridge in the titles.)

Q - In what order should the books be read?

A - The books were created as stand-alone novels, so they can be read in any order. However, if you have OCD issues like me, you might want to read them in the order in which they were written:

-TEXAS ROADS
-A PATH LESS TRAVELED
-THE WAY OF GRACE
-PILGRIMAGE OF PROMISE
-A BRIDGE UNBROKEN (and its companion Bible study on the theme of forgiveness, THE FRAGRANCE OF CRUSHED VIOLETS)
-CROSSROADS (Coming Soon)

Q - So why will readers be interested in the Miller's Creek novels?

A - Based on reader reviews, I'd say the books are compelling reads for these five main reasons:

1. They make readers laugh one minute and tear up the next.
2. They offer plenty of conflict and tension to keep readers turning pages.
3. The setting is compelling. (Some readers have compared Miller's Creek to Mayberry, only Texas-style. And I've lost count of how many readers have told me they want to live in Miller's Creek.)
4. The characters are endearing and relatable.
5. The books' themes are spiritually impactful.

In addition, all the books are rated at 4.5 stars or higher.

Q - Have any plans to bundle the series into a collection?

A - Actually the first three books have been bundled. Readers can check out my Amazon author page for a full list of my book titles, including the collection. And a big shout out to my reader friends: Thanks for reading!

Jesus Came to Save Sinners: An Earnest Conversation with Those Who Long for Salvation and Eternal Life

by Charles H. Spurgeon

This is a heart-level conversation with you, the reader. Every excuse, reason, and roadblock for not coming to Christ is examined and duly dealt with. If you think you may be too bad, or if perhaps you really are bad and you sin either openly or behind closed doors, you will discover that life in Christ is for you too. You can reject the message of salvation by faith, or you can choose to live a life of sin after professing faith in Christ, but you cannot change the truth as it is, either for yourself or for others. As such, it behooves you and your family to embrace truth, claim it for your own, and be genuinely set free for now and eternity. Come, and embrace this free gift of God, and live a victorious life for Him.About the AuthorCharles Haddon (C. H.) Spurgeon (1834-1892) was a British Baptist preacher. An Introduction to Centering Prayer

by Anthony Coleman

Centering Prayer is a method of silent prayer based on an anonymous 14th Century text called The Cloud of Unknowing, and has roots even further back in the writings of the Desert Fathers of Egyptian Monasticism. It has recently been popularized by the Trappist monk Thomas Keating. In The Cloud of Unknowing, the spiritual advisor describes a type of contemplative prayer in which one simply rests in the presence of God without an agenda. He believes that this "contemplative work of love" is the way to a changed spirit and character – and thereby the spiritual fruits of love, joy, and peace. By practicing Centering Prayer, one hopes to open themselves fully to the presence and action of God, experiencing authentic inner transformation in the process. An Introduction to Centering Prayer is a short tract designed to introduce readers to the discipline and encourage further study.

Supermundane

by Agni Yoga Society

Supermundane is the fourteenth book from the Agni Yoga Series which is composed of fourteen books. In them is found a synthesis of ancient Eastern beliefs and modern Western thought and a bridge between the spiritual and the scientific. Unlike previous yogas, Agni Yoga is a path not of physical disciplines, meditation, or asceticism—but of practice in daily life. It is the yoga of fiery energy, of consciousness, of responsible, directed thought. It teaches that the evolution of the planetary consciousness is a pressing necessity and that, through individual striving, it is an attainable aspiration for mankind. It affirms the existence of the Hierarchy of Light and the center of the Heart as the link with the Hierarchy and with the far-off worlds. Though not systematized in an ordinary sense, Agni Yoga is a Teaching that helps the discerning student to discover moral and spiritual guide-posts by which to learn to govern his or her life and thus contribute to the Common Good. For this reason Agni Yoga has been called a “living ethics.”Agni Yoga Society, Inc., New York

Return to Order: From a Frenzied Economy to an Organic Christian Society--Where We've Been, How We Got Here, and Where We Need to Go

by John Horvat

In times of crisis, we are forced to reexamine our ways and ponder our future. It is in this framework that we need to consider our present economic plight and the charting of our path forward. In his penetrating analysis of contemporary society, author John Horvat focuses on the present crisis with great insight and clarity. He claims modern economy has become cold, impersonal, and out of balance. Gone are the human elements of honor and trust so essential to our daily lives. Society has discarded the natural restraining influence of the human institutions and values that should temper our economic activities.Return to Order is a clarion call that invites us to reconnect with those institutions and values by applying the timeless principles of an organic Christian order. Horvat presents a refreshing picture of this order, so wonderfully adapted to our human nature. He describes the calming influence of those natural regulating institutions—such as custom, family, community, the Christian State, and the Church.A return to order is not only possible but crucial. Horvat shows us how to make it happen. Based on nearly twenty years of ground-breaking research, this book is being recognized as one of the most important and influential on the subject to be published in the past ten years. Its original insight into both the present crisis and remedies for the future thrust Return to Order into the center of the raging debate over how to restore America to prominence as a proud and great nation.Read this dramatic approach to restore America and join the debate about America’s RETURN TO ORDER.

George Washington: A Life From Beginning to End (Biographies of US Presidents Book 1)

by Hourly History

George Washington
George Washington, the first president of the United States, is much more than a monument on Mount Rushmore. Who was Washington, the general, president, and husband? He was first and foremost a man of impeccable honor which, despite military adversity and political wrangling, never abandoned him. The Founding Fathers who squabbled and competed amongst themselves did agree on one thing: only Washington could lead the country, first in the country’s military fight for freedom and then as the man charged with transforming thirteen individual states into a united country. But in his youth, George Washington did not intend to become the Father of his Country. As a younger son of a middling class Virginian, he intended to earn his living as a surveyor, and in that role, he was introduced to the vast potential of the country that would one day be a nation. But when the death of his older brother made him the heir to Mount Vernon, Washington ascended to leadership in the military, political and social spheres of Virginia and the United States.

Inside you will read about...
✓ The Washingtons of Virginia
✓ Europe Exports its Wars to the Colonies
✓ Washington at Mount Vernon
✓ An Englishman no Longer
✓ Washington at War
✓ The Father of His Country
✓ Return to Mount Vernon

As a member and later officer in the Virginia militia, he fought with the British army against the French as the two European powers struggled for control of the rich Ohio Valley. The British, who would refuse Washington a commission in their army, would later meet him in battle as the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, fighting for independence against the forces of King George III. As a political leader, he would become the architect of the American government. As the master of Mount Vernon, Washington’s marriage to the wealthy Martha Dandridge Custis placed him among the elite of the Virginia aristocracy. His integrity established a model for subsequent generations to emulate. That few have managed to match his achievements is an indication of his influence and character. Meet George Washington, the man, and discover the identity of this remarkable leader.

How To Read The Bible & Not Get Confused (The Not Confused Series Book 1)

by Gavin Cox

Now updated! Foreword by Rob Rufus.

The Bible documents seven covenants or contracts. Terms and conditions apply. Anyone not clear on which contract applies to them, why, and how, will inevitably be confused regarding what Christianity is all about.

This book is simple, straight-forward and clear. It will help you read your Bible with understanding. You will know what Jesus did and why, and how it applies to you. You will also be able to approach any passage of Scripture armed with that knowledge, and be able to apply it appropriately to your life and circumstances.

What beta-readers are saying about the book:

“This book is potent in the best sense of the word. Easy to read with analogies that cleared the mud in my thinking and left me with such clarity and understanding of my Bible, how to read and apply it. This is not another layer of “How To” to slap on the top of life, but a deep foundational re-alignment in Jesus that will bring everything else into peace and order, regardless of what circumstances we face. Read it!”

“I have just finished proof-reading this book and have been blown away. In a few short pages Gavin has provided concise teaching on understanding the Bible. There is something for everyone; from the new Christian who could be making heavy weather of getting to grips with the Scriptures, to “mature” Christians of many years’ standing. His thought processes are clear, the style of writing is conversational without being overly chatty and we are left in no doubt that the entire Bible is about Jesus and the finished work of the cross. I thought that I had a reasonable grasp of the seven covenants and God’s redemptive plan for mankind but this book brings fresh understanding and revelation. Highly recommended.”

Investment Management: A Science to Teach or an Art to Learn?

by Frank J. Fabozzi and Sergio M. Focardi

Following the 2007–09 financial crisis, mainstream finance theory was criticized for failing to forecast the market crash, which resulted in large losses for investors. Has our finance theory, which many consider an idealization that does not take reality into account, failed investors? Do we need to reconsider the theory and how it is taught (and practiced)? This book explores current critiques of mainstream theory and discusses implications for the curricula of finance programs as well as for practitioners. In so doing, the authors integrate a review of the literature supported by conversations with finance professors, asset managers, and other market players.

Incident at the Loch: A Northern Journey (part one)

by Geoffrey Peyton

Part one of a two week break in Ayrshire and Cumbria during a warm May in 1991. In this first part I hike from Ayr to Stranraer, sleeping in various wooded locations that are full of natural wildlife and magnificent lochs. Along the way I encounter close calls with the natural inhabitants, not to mention a couple of women who more than catch my eye. I ask the reader to excuse any grammatical hiccups, as I am just trying to tell a story. Thanks.

Montrose

by John Buchan

In a famous letter Keats has expounded life under the similitude of Chambers. There is first the Thoughtless Chamber, when man lives only for sensation; then comes the Chamber of Maiden Thought, when he consciously rejoices in the world of sense, and from this happy illumination acquires insight into the human heart; thence open many doors—"but all dark, all leading to dark passages." The simile applies not only to individual experience, but to the corporate life of peoples. There come epochs when a nation seems to move from the sun into the twilight, when the free ardour of youth is crippled by hesitations, when the eyes turn inward and instinct gives place to questioning.Such a period commonly follows an age of confidence and exuberant creation. We can see the shadows beginning to lengthen in the early years of Elizabeth's successor, and they do not lift till the garish dawn of the Restoration. It is dangerous to generalize about an epoch, but the first half of the seventeenth century has a character so distinct that it is permissible to separate certain elements in its intellectual atmosphere, which affected the minds of all who dwelt in it, whatever their creeds or parties. Whether we study it in the record of its campaigns and parliaments, or in the careers of its protagonists, or in the books of its great writers, three facts are patent in contrast with its predecessor...

A Grandson's Story: Beatrice, Nebraska 1977

by David Safris

Amidst the timeless rhythms of small town life in Nebraska during the 1970's comes a boy's realization that his beloved grandfather is tormented by memories of his experiences as an army officer in the last year of World War II. A thought-provoking and timely book about love, family, and the enormous strain placed on those that have protected America in times of war. The book explores how little we sometimes know about those we love the most and how relationships and loving bonds can change and evolve with the passing of time. Actual events and experiences are woven into a story that ranges from the calming Americana of small town life to the gripping action of World War II. Throughout the story, past and present are carefully melded together to allow the reader to experience life with a loved one that is experiencing severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at a time when people did not talk about the effects of combat. This book would be an excellent pick for a book club or history based book report. Sure to generate lively conversation and challenge readers to examine relationships with those around them that have served in the military.

To Russia...And Back: An Ordinary Man's Extraordinary Journey

by James Pitts

For more than 45 years, James Pitts kept his family in the dark about an incredible chapter in his long life. With Britain fighting a desperate war against Nazi Germany, on the day before his 18th birthday James walked into a recruiting office and signed on as a Telegraphist Air-Gunner in the Fleet Air Arm.That was the beginning of a three-year journey that was to see James leave the paucity of his London home and embark on an adventure that was to take him to the United States, Canada and the Soviet Union. On the way, he survived three plane crashes, lost his best friend in a tragic wartime accident and fought the Nazis in the skies over the Norwegian fjords. Then he was sent on what Winston Churchill described as the 'worst journey in the world' - through the unforgiving Arctic waters on the Russian Convoys. These convoys delivering vital supplies to the Soviet Union were relentlessly attacked by U-boats and planes, causing immense loss of life, and James took part in the final sea battle of the Second World War.His family had no knowledge of this aspect of life until, under pressure, he finally told them his story. This book tells that story with self-depreciation, modesty and humour, a fascinating account of how a naive young man faced up to extraordinary circumstances beyond the comprehension of most people (with a little help from alcohol!) at a monumental time in our country's history. In recent years, James, at the age of 89, has returned to Russia to carry the Olympic Flame for the Sochi Winter Olympics and to present the Arctic Star Medal that he had campaigned for to a major war museum in Moscow. In a journey just as fascinating as his wartime years, James recounts his visits to Downing Street, Buckingham Palace, both Houses of Parliament and the many interesting and entertaining characters he has met along the way. This is a story of an ordinary man's extraordinary journey, told with humour, modesty and dignity.“The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril.”- Winston Churchill, Prime Minister

There Were No Cats in America: "An American Tail" Enters Trump’s America

by Adam M. DeSimone

Using the 1986 animated film “An American Tail” as a framing device, this work explores the immigrant experience of émigrés who lived in the United States during the Gilded Age. While the film itself celebrates the arrival of the furry, lovable, Mousekewitz family to the U.S., this essay comments on the evolution of U.S. immigration policy from the late 19th to early 21st centuries, with special attention paid to the National Origins Act, the Chinese Exclusion Act, and to President Trump’s 2017 “Muslim bans.” Major push and pull factors associated with immigration are examined as well; a comparison between the socioeconomic conditions of the Gilded Age and modern era follow. In this essay, the author argues that the Trump administration’s views on immigration are similar to those of the 19th century’s exclusionary Nativists and their supporters. The author shows that all of this essay’s highlighted immigration policies are steeped in xenophobia, are intentionally designed not to solve the problems lawmakers claim they address, and are antithetical to the values that the U.S.—a nation of immigrants—claims as a deep part of its identity. In “An American Tail,” the film’s main heel, Warren T. Rat, tries to convince the marginalized mice-inhabitants of his world that one of his lies is truthful. Even as his story conspicuously unwinds around him, he reasserts himself by asking, “Who are you going to believe? Me, or your own eyes?” After reading this essay, the author hopes you will be able to trust your own eyes. You will be equipped with enough historic knowledge and context to think critically about President Trump’s rhetoric on immigration and refugees, decide if this is something you wish to resist, and do so while still trusting in the basic goodness of the American people, the majority of whom did not vote for Trump in the 2016 presidential election. The author intends this essay to be a small, personal contribution to today’s dialogue on immigration in America.

Life in Christ: Lessons from Our Lord's Miracles and Parables

by Charles H. Spurgeon

Original title: Miracles and Parables of Our Lord.Volume 1A deep, inspiring, and often challenging study of the Lord Jesus Christ's miracles and parables.Men who were led by the hand or groped their way along the wall to reach Jesus were touched by his finger and went home without a guide, rejoicing that Jesus Christ had opened their eyes. SpurgeonIn this first volume, Charles H. Spurgeon expounds on the following miracles:•Jesus heals two blind men by touching their eyes (Matthew 9:27-30). •Jesus uses spit to heal another blind man (Mark 8:22-25). •Jesus passes through the midst of those who would kill him (Luke 4:28-30). •Jesus brings a widow’s son back to life (Luke 7:11-17). •Jesus releases a woman from a spirit of infirmity (Luke 13:10-13). •Jesus heals ten lepers but only one thanks him (Luke 17:12-16). •Jesus gently rebukes his mother then makes wine for the wedding (John 2:1-5). •Jesus tests a nobleman’s faith and his son is healed (John 4:46-53). About the AuthorCharles Haddon (C.

Meeting of Two Seas: Where the heart leads the mind

by Saeed Malik

“Eye-opening in terms of the parity between the Abrahamic faiths, this fine model of scriptural analysis merits study by mystics of any faith.” Kirkus Reviews

This book is a follow-up to A perspective on the Signs of Al-Quran: Through the Prism of the Heart. Here the heart leads the mind on a journey into the eighteenth chapter of the Holy Quran. This chapter, known as Surah Kahf, has captivated seekers across the ages for its living spiritual appeal.
Meeting of two Seas is about a journey which Moses undertakes with Khidr. Though this journey is short, it continues to open doors to others, through our awakening to the meetings of many sets of two seas around us: The meeting of the manifested real and the hidden Real; the meeting of the temporal and the eternal; the meeting of the empirical with the spiritual; and the meeting of physical causes with the Spiritual Cause. Our consciousness too stands at the nexus of the seas of our very own inner and outer selves. When the heart and the mind come to a meld—the coming together of taddabur and taffakur—there is no turning back and no end to the joyous journey toward the shores and sea of the Arabic Quran. The i’jaz of the Quran is its unfathomable ability to lead us to a scent of the REAL and toward a sense of belonging to IT.

Startup Playbook

by Sam Altman and Gregory Koberger

Y Combinator spends a lot of time advising startups. Though one-on-one advice will always be crucial, we thought it might help us scale Y Combinator if we could distill the most generalizable parts of this advice into a sort of playbook we could give YC and YC Fellowship companies. Then we thought we should just give it to everyone.
This is meant for people new to the world of startups. Most of this will not be new to people who have read a lot of what YC partners have written—the goal is to get it into one place.

How To Feel Empowered When You Are Overwhelmed

by David Schaub

"Have you ever been afraid to make a decision? I know I have. We are all faced with big decisions in our life. Sometimes we let what we can’t do interfere with what we can do. We shouldn’t make decisions based off fear. I teach students and young adults how to make decisions while feeling peace and freedom at the same time. There is more to life than just striving and trying to survive. We can thrive during the chaos of life. We can make good decisions while finding hope in the uncertainty that can follow with making decisions. What if it doesn’t work out? What happens if I made the wrong decision? Will people be disappointed in me or my decision? Great questions that are hard to answer. They are however ones we need to take head on if we are going to live a life uncommon now and live a fruitful life. While there aren’t always perfect answers to hard questions there can always be freedom despite circumstances.

God, Conceivability, and Evil: The Logical Problem of Evil Revisited

by Kevin Moore

Perhaps you’ve heard that Alvin Plantinga resolved the logical problem of evil decades ago and that even most atheists agree. But, what if you aren’t most folks? What if you find yourself in that minority of folks who still worry about the compatibility of God and evil? What if you question Plantinga’s dubious suggestion that God’s desire for moral good is a good enough reason for Him to allow evil (if, as it turned out, He couldn’t get any moral good without allowing at least some evil)? What is the resolve for worries such as these? God, Conceivability, and Evil is about resolving the logical problem of evil for the rest of us. And, importantly, it is about doing so in a way that allows us to avoid BS-ing ourselves and others in the process. The solution that Moore defends to the logical problem of evil, in view of his worries about Plantinga’s Free Will Defense, is philosophically interesting, methodologically intuitive, theologically consistent and apologetically pertinent.

Hauling it to the Curb: Cleaning up your life in early recovery

by Ken Montrose

This 160 page workbook helps newcomers explore their denial, deal with early recovery, and work the first five steps of AA/NA. In addition to practical advice and thought-provoking exercises, this book tells the story of Matt and Rachel, a young couple in early recovery.
Some of us are born into a dump. Our parents have filled our homes with loads of emotional garbage. Every room holds memories of screaming arguments, or worse yet, stony silences. Every day we pretend we live in a normal home, and every day more garbage arrives. The stench of denial is stifling. We leave as soon as we can to turn our new homes into dumps, taking with us as much garbage as we can carry.
Some of us create our own dumps from scratch. We grow up in loving homes where getting drunk or stoned does not excuse immature behavior. We order loads of garbage until our parents accept living in a dump or force us to leave.
In either case, many of us suddenly realize we live in a dump. Be it a mansion or a mission, it is a dump. Every day the dumptrucks pull up, driven by bitter children, ex-spouses, angry bosses, police officers, and unsympathetic judges.
We cannot understand why they keep "dumping" on us. It takes some of us a long time to remember we ordered this garbage. It takes us even longer to realize we can refuse delivery on other people's trash.
Not using alcohol and other drugs (AAOD), slows the pace of delivery. Loads still arrive, but most often they are loads ordered before we got clean and sober. The alcoholic who stops drinking still lives in a dump, but with luck most of the garbage will rot away. He may have to deal with other people's loads.
Recovery requires cleaning out the dump. We get rid of old garbage and learn to refuse other people's garbage. In recovery we get out from under loads we don't remember ordering that arrive after we get clean and sober.
If you seem to have misplaced your mansion under the mounds of garbage, read on. It is time to start digging out.
