Constructions of Cancer in Early Modern England: Ravenous Natures (Palgrave Studies in Literature, Science and Medicine)

by Alanna Skuse

This book is open access under a CC-BY licence. Cancer is perhaps the modern world's most feared disease. Yet, we know relatively little about this malady's history before the nineteenth century. This book provides the first in-depth examination of perceptions of cancerous disease in early modern England. Looking to drama, poetry and polemic as well as medical texts and personal accounts, it contends that early modern people possessed an understanding of cancer which remains recognizable to us today. Many of the ways in which medical practitioners and lay people imagined cancer – as a 'woman's disease' or a 'beast' inside the body – remain strikingly familiar, and they helped to make this disease a byword for treachery and cruelty in discussions of religion, culture and politics. Equal...

Empirical case studies and reflections on care in institutionalised and standardised settings form the second section of the book. The concluding chapter, jointly written by many of the contr...

Asthma: Symptoms and Diagnosis

by Sics Editore

Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways. Persons susceptible to asthma get symptoms associated with the inflammation. The symptoms usually include an airway constriction of variable degree, which is relieved spontaneously or with treatment. Common symptoms include dyspnoea, wheezing and prolonged cough. The inflammation increases the sensitivity of the airways to many irritants. Auscultation of the lungs, spirometry, bronchodilatation test, peak expiratory flow (PEF) monitoring and chest x-ray are the basic examinations. Other examinations may be performed in uncertain cases or when a more exact classification of the disease is pursued.

Aphasia

by Sics Editore

Aphasia is a disorder affecting the processing, formulation and comprehension of spoken and written language resulting from a disease or trauma. Most commonly aphasia occurs secondary to cerebral infarction involving the left cerebral hemisphere. Cerebral haemorrhage of this region will likewise cause aphasia. Speech disorders of some kind occur in over half of patients with acute cerebrovascular disease. Sudden deterioration in the ability to speak is one of the warning signs of disturbed cerebral circulation. The character of aphasia is linked to the location and extent of the cerebral lesion. Aphasia may be accompanied by disturbances of other higher brain functions, including: articulation through the speech organs (dysarthria) memory functions (amnesia) perception (agnosia) voluntary ...

Investigating the Body in the Victorian Asylum: Doctors, Patients, and Practices (Mental Health in Historical Perspective)

by Jennifer Wallis

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book explores how the body was investigated in the late nineteenth-century asylum in Britain. As more and more Victorian asylum doctors looked to the bodily fabric to reveal the ‘truth’ of mental disease, a whole host of techniques and technologies were brought to bear upon the patient's body. These practices encompassed the clinical and the pathological, from testing the patient's reflexes to dissecting the brain. Investigating the Body in the Victorian Asylum takes a unique approach to the topic, conducting a chapter-by-chapter dissection of the body. It considers how asylum doctors viewed and investigated the skin, muscles, bones, brain, and bodily fluids. The book demonstrates the importance of the body in nineteenth-century ...

Innovative Medicine: Basic Research and Development

by Kazuwa Nakao

This book is devoted to innovative medicine, comprising the proceedings of the Uehara Memorial Foundation Symposium 2014. It remains extremely rare for the findings of basic research to be developed into clinical applications, and it takes a long time for the process to be achieved. The task of advancing the development of basic research into clinical reality lies with translational science, yet the field seems to struggle to find a way to move forward. To create innovative medical technology, many steps need to be taken: development and analysis of optimal animal models of human diseases, elucidation of genomic and epidemiological data, and establishment of “proof of concept”. There is also considerable demand for progress in drug research, new surgical procedures, and new clinical de...

Depression, Drugs and Somatic Diseases

by Sics Editore

Depression is a common disorder related to other psychiatric and somatic diseases, and it often complicates the diagnosis and treatment. According to various studies 20–60% of patients with general medical conditions have symptoms of depression and 15–45% fulfil the criteria of a mood disorder. Remember somatic diseases that may cause depression (table ). Rule out possible drugs and narcotic substances that may cause mood disorders (table ). The role of somatic differential diagnosis is especially emphasized: in elderly patients with no previous mood disorders in patients with atypical symptoms of depression in patients who do not benefit from traditional treatment of depression In a patient with somatic disease it is not always easy to differentiate the somatic symptoms from those of ...

Ranaviruses: Lethal Pathogens of Ectothermic Vertebrates

by Matthew J. Gray and V. Gregory Chinchar

This is the first book on ranaviruses. Ranaviruses are double-stranded DNA viruses that cause hemorrhagic disease in amphibians, reptiles, and fish. They have caused mass die-offs of ectothermic vertebrates in wild and captive populations around the globe. There is evidence that this pathogen is emerging and responsible for population declines in certain locations. Considering that amphibians and freshwater turtles are suitable hosts and the most imperiled vertebrate taxa in the world, ranaviruses can have significant impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem function. Additionally, many fish that are raised in aquaculture facilities and traded internationally are suitable hosts; thus, the potential economic impact of ranaviruses is significant. Ranaviruses also serve as a model for replicatio...
