The Great Depression and the New Deal: Core Documents

by John Moser

This collection of documents on the Depression and New Deal is the second volume in an extended series of document collections from the Ashbrook Center that will cover major periods, themes, and institutions in American history and government. The series began with a collection on the Founding. This volume follows appropriately, because it makes clear the reasons why and the degree to which Franklin Roosevelt intended the New Deal to be a re-founding of the American republic. In presenting the words that Roosevelt spoke, the collection shows us not only his arguments but his masterful rhetoric, which presented the New Deal as only an updating of the Founding. The collection presents as well the arguments of those who opposed the New Deal — Democrats as well as Republicans — and those who thought it did not go far enough. Taken together, the documents in the collection are an enlightening guide to one of the most consequential periods in American history.

Mosby's Rangers: A Record of the Operations of the Forty-Third Battalion Virginia Cavalry, from its Organization to the Surrender

by James Joseph Williamson

James J. Williamson was one of Mosby’s Rangers, so this is a memoir as well as the story of Mosby’s command. While this is in no way an objective account, it’s still a necessary read for anyone who wants to study John S. Mosby and his men. Williamson also provides correspondence and extracts from the Official Records for both sides and contains interesting stories about some very colorful individuals.

The Diary of Lt.Col. John Withers: The Civil War in His Own Hand. October 1860-December 1862

by LtCol. John Withers

The American Civil War, more commonly known as the Civil War, raged from 1861 to 1865. This bloody conflict was conducted to maintain the Union of the United States and prevent the formation of an independent country known as the Confederate States of America.

In 1861 the United States consisted of 34 states. Seven Southern slave states seceded from the United States to form the Confederacy. Eventually the Confederacy included eleven states, but they claimed thirteen, plus additional western territories.

The primary issue behind the southern states seceding from the Union was that of slavery. The North desired to abolish slavery, the South wanted to keep it.

April 12, 1861, marked the beginning of hostilities when Southern forces fire upon Fort Sumter, South Carolina.

After four bloody years and 600,000 Union and Confederate soldiers dead, the Confederacy surrendered and the Union was maintained.

Sadly, the battles were fought between brothers,
between fathers and sons, between families and
friends. It wasn’t uncommon for old friends commanding forces of the Union and Confederacy to face-off across the killing fields of various battlefields. No one knows how many fathers killed their sons, how many son’s killed their fathers and how many brothers, killed their sibling. Or how many lifelong friends killed each other. It was indeed a sad and tragic episode in America history.

Interestingly, many officers serving in the Union army resigned their commission and enlisted in the Confederate Army.
That was true for General Robert E. Lee the supreme commander of the Confederate Army and it was true for Lt. Col. John Withers a graduate of the United States Military Academy who resigned his commission in the union army in March 1861 and was appointed a Captain in the Confederate Army on March 29, 1861.

His diary provides an exceptionally intimate window into his military and family life which is rarely seen in publications. His love for his family is evident and his dedication to duty comes through clearly.

At times, his diary reads similar to a novel; capturing the joy, sadness, death, destruction, horrors and mundane activities of everyday life during times of war. His entries include meeting Presidents, British Royalty and Generals of the Union and Confederacy and learning of battles in real time.

One must remember, this was his personal diary, it was never meant for public review. Yet, it is a marvelously profound work and powerful piece of history.

I opted to preserve the authenticity, flavor and intimacy of his diary by printing it in his original handwriting. This brings remarkable warmth to his story not present in a transcribed form. It allows the readers to imagine Lt. Col. Withers seated at a desk, lit by a lantern, as he put words to paper at the end of the day. Since this is a copy of his original diary, some of the words on the right side of the page were unavoidably clipped by the National Archives during processing. However, the missing letters do not distract from the work.

No matter your opinion regarding the Civil War; you will agree that after reading this magnificent diary, you will never forget Lt. Col. Withers.

Enjoy his journey.

His rise to political power began in the humble setting of Kinderhook, New York, where he was born to Dutch parents who ran a tavern frequented by the Empire State’s political elite, including Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Inside you will read about...✓ An American is Born ✓ The Little Magician ✓ Van Buren Enters the National Stage ✓ President Jackson’s Right-Hand Man ✓ Van Buren’s Turn ✓ In and Out of the White House ✓ The Legacy of the Little Magician And much more! From his earliest involvement in government, Van Buren was committed to the nurturing of political parties as a way to deliver the most effective leadership to the American people. He was a loyal supporter of President Andrew Jackson, but when Van Buren took office, he inherited the financial crisis that Jackson’s policies had helped to create. The Panic of 1837 brought the economic prosperity of the country to a screeching halt and ultimately, Van Buren, who was not re-elected for a second term, paid the price. Whatever his failings as a president, he was a pre-eminent politician, and when the story of America is told, Van Buren’s contribution to the political process must be highly ranked.

THE MAN WITH THE MONA LISA SMILE

by Richard Hooke

JFK Researchers Richard Hooke and Larry Rivera provide the most detailed, structural and conclusive analysis of the Altgens6 photo that has ever been done; undeniable and indisputable proof, based upon sound scientific reasoning and particular examination of the photographic record. Having broken free from the shadow of the JFK conspiratorial BIG LIE of the 20th Century, and the Power of Officialdom that decreed for 50 years Billy Lovelady was Altgens6 Doorman, Richard Hooke, employing personal computer technology and direct reasoning, has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that Lee Harvey Oswald was in the Texas School Book Depository doorway, on November 22, 1963 at 12:30 pm, and thus was not a shooter of President John F. Kennedy. Hooke and Rivera decipher the myriad of mystery, within the Altgens6 photo, and expose the 'Lovelady fraud' and deception perpetrated by the U.S. Government upon the American people. Veteran researcher Larry Rivera separates the alteration from misinterpretation, in Altgens6, once and for all: Fedora Man and Smiling Woman with Child, Obfuscated Man, Black Tie Man, Black Profile Guy, Buell Wesley Frazier and the Lovelady fraud, the BIG LIE perpetrated on the American people by the Warren Commission. Will forever change your view of the murder case that altered the course of American history. Never again will you ever consider Oswald an assassin but, rather, a misguided patsy who was sacrificed, by his U.S. Intelligence over-lords, to shoulder the blame for the murder of JFK; a good man who resigned himself to carry out his assignment for his country - to the bitter end.

Ronald Reagan* * *Download for FREE on Kindle Unlimited + Free BONUS Inside!* * *Read On Your Computer, MAC, Smartphone, Kindle Reader, iPad, or Tablet. On January 20, 1981, Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as the 40th president of the United States. That same day, the Americans who had been held hostage in Iran were released. For many Americans, the juxtaposition of those events was no coincidence. Ronald Reagan was the president they elected to restore their country’s sagging influence in the world and disappointing image at home. He was a president who believed in a United States that was truly, as he said in his farewell address, “a shining city.” He believed in the myth of American greatness, and for a nation that was still numb from Watergate, immersed in economic stagnation, and humiliated by international events, he made it believable. Inside you will read about...✓ The Small Town Boy✓ Reagan’s Hollywood Career✓ The Governor’s Race✓ The Assassination Attempt✓ Reagan and the Evil Empire✓ The Alzheimer’s DiagnosisAnd much more!Ronald Reagan would remain the man who beat the Russians and ended the Cold War, changing the composition of the globe with his conservative politics and his passionate idealism. Even through Reagan’s political trials, the Iran-Contra hearings, the mixed results of his economic policies known as Reaganomics, and the military build-up that swelled the national debt, the nation saw him as the man who restored the country to its rightful place as a leader among nations.

The Watergate Conspiracy Conviction and Appeal of Assistant Attorney General Robert Mardian

by Arnold Rochvarg

Robert Mardian was the Assistant Attorney General for Internal Security during President Nixon's first term. In this role, he was involved in many controversial matters including the Pentagon Papers case. Mardian was convicted along with former Attorney General John Mitchell, and Nixon White House aides John Ehrlichman and H.R. "Bob" Haldeman of conspiracy to obstruct justice at the Watergate conspiracy trial held before Judge John Sirica. Arnold Rochvarg, the author of this book, was a member of the legal defense team for the appeal of Mardian's conviction. This book is extremely helpful to learn about the Watergate scandal. Watergate led to prison terms for many of Nixon's closest associates and to Nixon's resignation as President. The book explains (1) the planning of the break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex by John Mitchell, White House Counsel John Dean, and White House aides Jeb Magruder and Gordon Liddy; (2) the actual break-in involving ex- CIA operative and White House aide Howard Hunt, several of Hunt's former CIA associates from the Bay of Pigs invasion, and Nixon campaign security chief James McCord; (3) the attempts to deny that those arrested at the Watergate had any connection with the Nixon re-election campaign including payments of hush money, offers of clemency, destruction of documents, perjury before the grand jury, and attempts to have the CIA take responsibility to halt the FBI investigation; (4) the convictions of the original burglars without the true facts becoming public until James McCord informed Judge Sirica that "higher-ups" were responsible;(5) the guilty pleas and cooperation with the prosecution by some of the major participants including John Dean and Jeb Magruder; (6) the indictments of seven former Nixon administration officials for crimes including conspiracy, obstruction of justice and perjury; (7) the conspiracy trial of five defendants before Judge John Sirica after one of the seven defendants pleaded guilty and another was granted a separate trial; (8) the guilty verdicts for four of the five defendants; (9) the appeals of the four defendants convicted at the conspiracy trial; and (10) significant events that occurred after all Watergate legal proceedings had ended. This book pays special attention to the facts presented at trial involving Robert Mardian because of all the convicted defendants, Mardian was the only defendant who presented a strong defense and whose guilt was truly in doubt. The book's detailed analysis of the facts relating to Mardian present a close look at the evidence presented at trial, and raise questions as to the validity of the jury's guilty verdict. The book then discusses the legal issues involved in Mardian's appeal including the use of the White House tapes against Mardian, and Mardian's defense that he was "only acting as a lawyer." The appeals court opinion which reversed Mardian's conviction is presented, as well as his lawyers' efforts to avoid a retrial.

This book is unique in several ways. Unlike most other books on Watergate, this book is written from the defense perspective by a former member of Mardian's defense team. Moreover, included are transcripts of closed court hearings. Additionally, before his death, Mardian provided his legal team with personal notes of a conversation he had with Richard Nixon a few years after Watergate in which Nixon gave his opinion not only on Watergate, but other matters including Jimmy Carter, the media, and foreign policy. The book also contains discussions of the "lawyering" of the Watergate case including decisions involving legal strategy, and correspondence with the Watergate Special Prosecutor's office.

This book contains a wealth of information which should be of great interest not only to Watergate "buffs," but also those with an interest in American history, legal history, criminal law, the legal profession, and the legacy of Richard Nixon.

Diary of a Mormon Marine in Vietnam: by Alma L. Day

by Alma Day

Experiences of Alma Day, a Mormon during the Vietnam War 1966 to 1968 who shares his perspective of warfare while actively staying true to his religious convictions and while serving with war-hardened Marines where violence and vice surrounded all.

Alma miraculously survives a close-range grenade attack and, after recovering, heroically chose to return to Vietnam when given the option to stay in the United States to finish his service.

When he returned to Vietnam, he was assigned to serve with the “Fighting Fifth”, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, the most highly decorated regiment in the Marine Corps and documents how he survived, on the prayers of his family back home, the Battle of Hue, one of the bloodiest and longest battles of the Vietnam War.

Alma also shares the experiences of a few other Marines who did not make it back to have their honorable service properly documented.

The realities of war are thoroughly, yet delicately described to give the reader a sense of what transpired without offending your sensibilities.

Below are a few excerpts from the book:
“Our Judo teacher told us how he killed several Koreans with his bare hands, and how he enjoyed watching the men die in slow agony. Most of the men acted interested. When he screamed, "Kill! Kill! Kill!" they responded like Hitler's hysterical audiences. I wonder what these men will do in Vietnam. Natural charm and creativeness seems distant and dead to them…I decided that never again would I point an accusing finger at some far-off Nazi regime, as being the prime example of barbarism. The seeds of the same vicious contempt for our enemies are in our very ranks today.”

“…I walked closer to see what the young mothers were bending over. They were rocking back and forth in a weeping incantation. No one could comfort them. I could see the little bodies that our two short rounds had killed as they played. How small they lay! Oh, such tiny forms, still soft from life they played in moments before. Still dirty from happy contact with Mother Earth… The U.S. Army paid the people reparations money for the hapless children who were accidentally killed. The parents received $40 for a child; $50 for a water buffalo.”

“Morning found her in the same position. Her food was untouched. A change of guard brought a colored fellow, who immediately saw in her a play-thing. Before I had left, his teasing and bedeviling got so bad that I swore a hissing warning: "If I ever catch you man-handling or even touching her again, I'll see that you're written up and ‘busted'!" I was a PFC, but he respected my warning”

“I hope I shall never speak of Communism in terms of some ideology that deserves respect. To me, it is the most ruthless plague of human degeneracy that man has invented. It twisted mothers in Vietnam into fighting fanatics, and babes into cunning roughs, and American boys into beasts of prey”

“I think the thing that gets me into my most trouble is trying to defend and express my concern for the Vietnamese people themselves. This seems to rankle the Marines. I can't help feeling that the peasants over here get ten times the injustices and injuries of any combat unit. Yesterday, for instance, one of our tanks was plowing over a knoll, and I guess the driver didn't see the little minibus that tried to get out of its way. Those who saw the accident said the people in the minibus didn't have a chance. They probably thought the tank would swing out of its way, but instead it lumbered right over it, killing eight people instantly.”

“Someone nudged me and whispered, “Where do we run if they come this way?” I grabbed his arm and said, “We won't run! That would be the worst thing we could do.” He was literally trembling, and his face turned furtively from side to side in fright. He was one of the new men, and I felt sorry for him”

Letters from Gill

by Terrie Biggs

View the Civil War from unique perspective as seen through the experiences of a Union soldier camped in Confederate territory. Gilbert Bennett, the great grandfather of the author, enlisted in Company K of the Iowa 27th Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. These letters penned to his new bride show acts of compassion, kindness, honor, and reveal one soldier's fascinating experience while serving in the Civil War from a perspective never shown in the media.

He described the struggles and hardships of camp life, skirmishes, battles, and rampant diseases that caused hospitalization and death among the soldiers. One of the moments that defined Gil's character was when he encountered the first black regiment which is described in his writings.

Loneliness and the torment of wanting to hear from those they love are timeless emotions. At the end of his letters, the author compared letters from Gill to samples ranging from World War I to present day, and at the heart of them all is that the soldiers are anxiously waiting for letters from home.
