The Days of Guns, & Raz's

by Raz Cue

In the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and eighty-five, a little ol’ band called Guns N’ Roses formed in Raz Cue’s living room. And thus, Cue became the band’s first manager... to be fired. With absolutely no hard feelings, Mr. Cue remained a trusted member of G N’ R’s inner circle for the remainder of the decade, allowing him to witness the iconic band tour the world’s stages as they rose to the pinnacle of rock ‘n’ roll. When the Guns N’ Roses party quit being fun for him, Cue stepped away from the swelling ranks of backstage hangers-on so that he might fully enjoy the band’s incendiary performances from a fan-in-the-audience perspective. With good times and fun stories constantly swirling about in his mind’s eye, a few years back, Mr. Cue resolved to set the standard for which all future memoirs should be judged. Four hundred and twenty drafts later, the product of that quest emerged: The Days of Guns, and Raz’s. Far more than a Hollywood rock ‘n’ roll memoir, the book follows Cue’s drug-addled journey from feral child to moral-ish adult. His spinal injury during high school and lifetime of riding a wheelchair, while higher than the International Space Station, are thrown in to keep it all rolling along.Mr. Cue manages to wrap up the whole shebang neatly within the changing landscapes of 1970s through 90s America, all the while showcasing his lifelong love of music and cheap thrills. With an undying admiration for hungry up-and-coming artists, Cue remained involved in the Los Angeles music scene through the mid-90s implosion of the Sunset Strip, so he wedges in a bit of name-dropping from that period, too. If you’ve longed for a caustic, satirical, blue-collar rock bio that delivers a stinging bitch slap to our current insanity-level political correctness, this one’s for you!

WALT DISNEY: The Man Behind The Magic: A Walt Disney Biography

by AA Christiansen

WALT DISNEY: The Man Behind The Magic (A Walt Disney Biography)The legend later known as Walt Disney was born Walter Elias Disney on December 5th in 1901 in Chicago, Illinois and died on December 15th in 1966 in Burbank, California at the age of 65. His work as an American film producer, animator, voice actor, and entrepreneur would lead to a variety of enhancements in the way that we make cartoons and his personal style would touch the world and forever leave his mark. Regardless of the negative connotations associated with his name since his death, none can deny his importance in film and animation history and in the cultural fabric of the United States. The awards and commendations he has won and been awarded speak for themselves, but so does his work and the innovations he’s brought into the future of animation and filmmaking. His movies are still shown, re-released, and adapted quite frequently, and his legacy lives on with Disney as a film company, the Disney amusement parks that now span several countries, and so much more. His high standards and expectations live on in the Disney company’s continued efforts in the production of popular entertainment and they inspire other innovators in the field of entertainment, film, television, and animation as well. No matter what your opinion of Walt Disney may be, none can argue against the extraordinary magnitude of the span of contact that his work has had on the world. The physical proof of his existence is everywhere. Walk into any mall, scan the channels on your television on any day, or even just walk out of your house and chances are, something that was created by Disney will cross your path. This book looks at the life and work of this great animator, and the legacy he leaves behind.

HOLLYWOOD ICONS VOLUME 2: Audrey Hepburn and Bette Davis - 2 Books in 1

by Katy Holborn

HOLLYWOOD ICONS VOLUME 2: Audrey Hepburn and Bette Davis - 2 Books in 1Featuring… *Audrey Hepburn*Bette Davis2 Great Books in 1!Audrey HepburnThese are just a few of the things that makes a star like Audrey Hepburn transcend the movies to icon-status. She wasn’t just beautiful; so many women, especially in her field, are beautiful. More than that, she became the symbol for an ideal of timeless relevance - that is, what it means to be a woman of style and substance. It was beyond beauty. It was a way of life and being.Bette DavisWhen great things are expected from a person, the commonly used phrase is something to the effect of – ‘One day, they will write songs about you.’ In the case of Bette Davis, she has had more than her fair share of tributes and it is of no surprise; few actors have her ability to captivate and inspire, her courage to challenge, and her willingness to repulse and terrify an audience in the name of her craft. Because here in Hollywood, even if she were in a town of giants, she was an unapologetic titan.

Charlie Chaplin: A Life From Beginning to End (Biographies of Actors Book 3)

by Hourly History

Charlie Chaplin* * *Download for FREE on Kindle Unlimited + Free BONUS Inside!* * *Read On Your Computer, MAC, Smartphone, Kindle Reader, iPad, or Tablet.Charlie Chaplin is most famously known for his “tramp” character—the homeless hobo that can be seen hopping from trains and lining up in the soup kitchens of the Great Depression. At a time when the whole world was struggling from economic meltdown, Charlie Chaplin made “destitute” a term of endearment. We may laugh when we see Charlie Chaplin so broke that he has to boil his shoes and eat them, but during the worst parts of the economic collapse of the 1920s and 1930s, some people had to do just that. So, at the time, even though many would laugh at the crazy tramp’s antics, they could also relate and identify with them. And the fact that Charlie Chaplin’s tramp character could be completely broke with his pockets turned out, sitting in a gutter with the rain pouring down, yet still be happy, gave people quite a bit of encouragement. People thought that if the homeless, wandering tramp portrayed in Chaplin’s films could get through such rough times and be alright, maybe they could too. Inside you will read about...✓ From the Poorhouse to the Stage✓ Coming to America✓ Unhappily Married✓ The Silent Film Hush Money✓ He Doesn’t Talkie✓ Socialist Leanings✓ Exile from the United StatesAnd much more!As goofy as some of Chaplin’s slapstick comedic moments are in his films, it was the way he just kept trundling along, even in the face of great adversity, that empowered so many. It was this tantalizing glimpse of hope, more than anything else, that kept them coming back for more.

Walden

by Henry David Thoreau

First published in 1854, Walden recounts American philosopher and naturalist Henry David Thoreau's experiences over the course of two years, two months, and two days in a cabin he built near Walden Pond, amidst woodland owned by his friend and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson, near Concord, Massachusetts. The book is part personal declaration of independence, social experiment, voyage of spiritual discovery, satire, and, ultimately, manual for self-reliance.Walden enjoyed some success upon its release, but still took five years to sell 2,000 copies, and then went out of print until Thoreau’s death in 1862. Despite its slow beginnings, later critics have praised it as an American classic that explores natural simplicity, harmony, and beauty. The poet Robert Frost wrote of Thoreau, "In one book ... he surpasses everything we have had in America."

Robert Frost: The Life and Legacy of the Famous 20th Century American Poet

by Charles River Editors

*Includes pictures*Includes a bibliography for further reading*Includes a table of contents“I'd like to get away from earth awhileAnd then come back to it and begin over.May no fate willfully misunderstand meAnd half grant what I wish and snatch me awayNot to return. Earth's the right place for love:I don't know where it's likely to go better.I'd like to go by climbing a birch tree,And climb black branches up a snow-white trunkToward heaven, till the tree could bear no more,But dipped its top and set me down again. That would be good both going and coming back. One could do worse than be a swinger of birches.” – Robert Frost, “Birches”Of all the authors and poets American schoolchildren may be exposed to over the course of their education, Robert Frost is often one of the first, and on rare occasions that he is not, it is still a near certainty that some of his most famous poems will be discussed at some point. Many will have memorized “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” before finishing grade school or will instantly recall the end of “The Road Not Taken.” Frost may not be as remembered or influential as other American literary giants, or even poets such as Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman, but his career was historic in terms of its length and breadth of accomplishments. Over the course of several decades, Frost became the first to win four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry, and he also earned such recognitions as a Congressional Medal of Honor before being made the poet laureate of Vermont shortly before the end of his life. The many works he put out and the various styles of prose all greatly influenced his contemporaries and future generations of writers, even as he ably described a rural America of a seemingly bygone era and managed to instill universal ideas and teachings therein. Poet Amy Lowell may have described his abilities best early on in Frost’s career, writing of him, “He tells you what he has seen exactly as he has seen it. And in the word exactly lies the half of his talent. The other half is a great and beautiful simplicity of phrase, the inheritance of a race brought up on the English Bible. Mr. Frost's work is not in the least objective. He is not writing of people whom he has met in summer vacations, who strike him as interesting, and whose life he thinks worthy of perpetuation. Mr. Frost writes as a man under the spell of a fixed idea. He is as racial as his own puppets. One of the great interests of the book is the uncompromising New Englander it reveals. … Art is rooted in the soil, and only the very greatest men can be both cosmopolitan and great. Mr. Frost is as New England as Burns is Scotch, Synge Irish, or Mistral Provençal.”Robert Frost: The Life and Legacy of the Famous 20th Century American Poet looks at his remarkable life and work. Along with pictures depicting important people, places, and events, you will learn about Robert Frost like never before.

Growing Up Word by Word: A memoir about reading and writing as a child

by M.C. O'Callaghan

This is a memoir about a girl growing up in 1970s Ireland, a girl who loved to read and write. The author describes the books and other material she read, including book series, school books, and comics. She notes how she had to become an open-minded reader. There is a general chapter on the lessons she learnt from childhood books, and a separate chapter on lessons she learnt from Enid Blyton's books. There are descriptions of the girl's first attempt at writing a "novel", and her school projects. Sometimes, writing had a companionable aspect, as when she got friends to write in an autograph book, and started writing to a pen pal. There was also the time she was asked to go on the radio...

Captain Fantastic: The Definitive Biography of Elton John in the '70s

by David DeCouto

The definitive artist of post-Watergate America, Elton John accounted for a staggering two percent of all global record sales by 1975, while his concert tours routinely broke house records set by the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. Combining rigorous research with critical insight -- and drawing on over ninety firsthand interviews with Elton's closest friends and collaborators -- 'Captain Fantastic: The Definitive Biography of Elton John in the '70s' is a no-holds-barred portrait of the troubled genius who helped change the landscape of popular music more than any other solo artist since Elvis Presley.'Captain Fantastic: The Definitive Biography of Elton John in the '70s' explores in intimate detail the life of a greatly misunderstood icon during the Technicolor decade when his creative powers were at their zenith and his personal life at its most conflicted. The result is a work that provides fresh insight into a musical force nonpareil, including explorations of Elton's battles with various addictions, his suicide attempts (including one never before spoken of), his startling success as a leading icon of the era, his exploration of his sexuality, the stories behind nearly every song he wrote and recorded during the decade, and much more. This blunt yet compassionate portrait -- which features a foreword from Jethro Tull's iconic leader, Ian Anderson, and an afterword by A.J. Croce, the critically acclaimed pianist and son of the late Jim Croce -- also comes complete with many rare and never-before-published photographs, as well as a complete list of every concert (including city/date/venue) that Elton gave during the '70s, and a detailed bibliography. "Everything knows everything about me, and everyone knows nothing," Elton once said. With the publication of 'Captain Fantastic: The Definitive Biography of Elton John in the '70s, that is about to change.

Three Great Impresarios: Emperors of Song

by Freddie Stockdale

Great impresarios are an extinct breed.Grand Opera today is presented either by the state or by major corporate trusts. Yet, in the Golden Age of Verdi and Puccini, Wagner and Richard Strauss, opera in Britain and the United States was almost exclusively the preserve of individual private businessmen — the impresarios — who made (and lost) fortunes by personallv employing the great stars of the day.The king of bombast was Colonel James Mapleson, child-star, wiliest of agents, then grandest and finally most unlucky of showmen. Obsession ruined Oscar Hammerstein I. not once, not twice but three times bankrupted by his determination to conquer Broadway. Great wealth protected John Christie, soldier, schoolmaster and heir to Glyndebourne Manor and estates, when his love for his wife led to his building up the largest private opera festival since Bayreuth.Patti and Melba, Caruso and Tetrazzini — those legendary super-egos, with their jewels, parrots, castles and private investment accounts at Rothschilds — were the raw material these enterprising men tried to turn to gold. This book, concentrating on the period 1860-1939, rediscovers their spectacular successes, and their even more spectacular disasters.Freddie Stockdale founded Pavilion Opera, a small touring company, in 1981 and has written two previous books on opera: The Opera Guide (with Martin Dreyer) and Figaro Here, Figaro There. He lives with his wife, daughter and youngest son in Sussex, and has three elder sons by a previous marriage. Having taken opera tours as far afield as Moscow, Sydney,Tokyo and New York, he is well qualified to assess the problems confronted by the great impresarios of the Golden Age. He has also written a series of novels under his own name, and a series of crime novels under the pseudonym John Gano.Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent digital publisher. Hollywood Ending

by Lance Pototschnik

"Easily the funniest book I've read this year." --Indies TodayThe 2008 recession hits. The US economy goes belly-up and sentences a young generation to wayward lives. With nothing to lose, Lance Pototschnik and his best friend, Jackson Greenly, decide to go for their artist dreams. Lance begins a grassroots initiative to sell an original screenplay to Hollywood. He lives out of a rental car and travels the country filming strangers' street auditions, hoping to generate enough interest on social media to dragoon a production deal. Jackson goes to art school, where he is inspired to make the perfect painting: one with the power to shoot a person dead. Hollywood Ending is a shotgun-seat view of the awkward, hilarious places dreams can lead us. But this book is so much more than a laugh-out-loud ride beside the author. Pototschnik is a self-aware witness to his own crazy journey, and to the possessory effects dissipated art and media saturation have had on him, and on his dreams. Here, he turns his keen powers of observation on a couple of life's deepest questions: Why do we think what we think? Why do we want what we want? This is required reading for those who get the ineffable sense that the world is going to hell in a hilarious handbasket.

The Other Side of the Moon: The Life of David Niven

by Sheridan Morley

‘A highly readable work … Niven emerges as gallant and gracious.’ Chicago TribuneSheridan Morley wrote this biography of the consummate on-screen English gentleman after speaking to over 150 of Niven’s friends and colleagues (only Rex Harrison refused). The result is a picture which both supports and contradicts the charming vagabond persona depicted in Niven’s own bestselling memoirs. While millions throughout his life were enchanted by Niven’s happy-go-lucky charisma and world-class anecdotage, he was in many respects a private figure, haunted by a fear of failure, and a victim of several key tragedies in his personal life. Morley’s biography is a warm, appreciative but perceptive account which captures both sides of one of Hollywood’s most enduringly lovable figures.‘A compassionate account that goes past the blithe persona … yet, there is much humor—the actor’s and his biographer’s—in this notable book’ Publishers Weekly‘Head and shoulders above the average showbiz biography … He understands many of Niven’s deeper feelings’ John Mortimer, Sunday Times‘A well-told story … the darker side as well as the mask of a complex and perhaps desperate character. He was a life-enhancer off-screen as well as on’ The Times‘Shrewd and pleasing; shows how dark Niven’s moon could be’ Alexander Walker, Evening Standard

Daughter of Earth and Water: A Biography of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

by Noel Gerson

Mary Wollstonecraft was fifteen when, in 1813, she met the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

A disciple of Mary’s famous father, the philosopher William Godwin (her mother was the great feminist Mary Wollstonecraft), Shelley himself was only twenty, though he was married and soon to be a father.

Mary and Shelley fell in love the next summer; and several months later they ran away together.

Thus began one of the most tragic, poignant, and, in all respects, brilliant relationships between a woman and a man that has ever been recorded.

Shelley went on writing the poetry that was to make him one of the immortals.

And Mary, as the result of a contest to see who could produce the best tale of the supernatural, wrote the classic Frankenstein.

She was nineteen when she completed Frankenstein, which was at first published anonymously because of the prejudice at the time against female writers.

Though they married in 1816, following the suicide of Shelley’s wife, Mary and Shelley were for all their time together considered scandalous for their behaviour; in fact, they were both quite prudish and disapproved, for example, of the celebrated sexual exploits of their friend Lord Byron.

Their lives were dogged by tragedy: suicide in both families, the early deaths of their first two children, and, finally, the death by drowning of Percy Bysshe Shelley at the age of twenty-nine.

This is a story of love and of genius. Of faith and of rebellion.

Mary Shelley was one of the most remarkable and celebrated women of her time, and for all her happiness with her husband, life was not kind to her.

But she never went under, and her story is touching, real, inspiring.

Noel Bertram Gerson (1913-1988) was a prolific American author, who wrote 325 books under his own name and under several pseudonyms. He channeled his own wartime experience in military intelligence into many of his novels, as well as writing widely about American history. His titles include ‘Liner’, ‘The Conqueror’s Wife’, ‘The Great Rogue: A Biography of Captain John Smith’ and ‘I’ll Storm Hell: A Novel of Mad Anthony Wayne’.

My Manic Diary

by Nena Sylvia Toy St. Louis

This diary was created in February and March, 2015, approximately 3 months before I planned to retire from dayjob. I believe each of us is emotionally ready to retire at different points in our lives. I was ready in 2012, so, by 2014, I was counting the days. After I woke up manic on February 28, 2015, I knew it was time to retire from dayjob because I am too old to have a professional dayjob simultaneous with a professional art career on 3 hours of sleep per night. I retired on March 27, 2015, long enough for my employer to find a replacement. Finally, the 40 to 60 hours per week I’ve put into making art (sculpture, theatre, video) for 3o years is happening 9 to 5. I tried to keep the diary in as raw a state as possible, so there has been only minimal editing for formatting and clarity.

Cleo

by Hiag Akmakjian

In this raunchy novel, a young American veteran, using the GI Bill to attend an art school in Montparnasse, returns to post-World War II Paris where he meets Cleo. She is a 19-year-old virginal American studying abroad who, along with a group of café friends and a comic overweight middle-aged Parisian prostitute, hopes to explore love, philosophy, sex and early movies in the easygoing ways of Left Bank Paris. It is an unusual kind of novel: a graphic love story (quite graphic at times) while remaining a fun read.

The Man Charles Dickens: A Victorian Portrait

by Edward Wagenknecht

Charles Dickens is one of Britain’s best loved authors. But who was the man behind The Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist.Edward Wagenknecht’s widely acclaimed “psychograph” of Charles Dickens answers those questions. The Dickens who emerges is a man of many parts — author, husband, father, editor, social reformer, businessman, and, last but not least, a man who was a man regardless of the criteria used to judge him. The completed portrait is that of genius, its varied interests, its abounding energy, and its achievements.“As The Man Charles Dickens leaves my typewriter for the second time,” says the author, “it says what I now wish to say about its subject as well as I am able to say it … Nor can I say good-bye to Dickens a second time without recording my present judgment that he is the greatest man I have ever worked on.”“Must” reading for all students of English literature, the book will interest anyone who reads Dickens as well.Edward Wagenknecht is the author of more than twenty other books. Among them are Dickens and the Scandalmongers, Mark Twain: The Man and His Work (revised edition), The Movies in the Age of Innocence, Chicago, and Seven Daughters of the Theater, all published by the University of Oklahoma Press.Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent digital publisher. Mu Xin: The Literary Odyssey

by Joanne Wang

Mu Xin (1927-2011) is the pen name of a renowned Chinese writer and artist. Born in Wuzhen, near Shanghai, China, into a wealthy aristocratic family, Mu Xin was among those in the last generation to receive a classical education in the literati tradition, while at the same time he was also exposed through voluminous reading to the highest achievements of Western art and culture at a very young age. From 1947 to 1949, Mu Xin attended Shanghai Institute of the Arts. From 1949 to 1982, Mu Xin lived in China. Although he wrote profusely in that period, all of his earlier manuscripts were confiscated and destroyed during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). In 1982 after coming to live in the US, Mu Xin began to publish books of short stories, prose, and poetry (in Chinese) and contributed regularly to literary columns in Chinese journals and newspapers outside the PRC. Among the Chinese diaspora, Mu Xin's works have attracted an intense following. Few Chinese writers in modern history possess a mastery of the Chinese cultural and linguistic heritage as firm as that of Mu Xin. Innovatively combining fiction, sanwen (a Chinese genre which blends characteristics of the essay, fiction, and poetry), and philosophical reflections, Mu Xin's writing is both profoundly Chinese and reminiscent of the internalization and unconventionality of Western modern masters. In addition to his literary accomplishments, Mu Xin was also a well recognized artist whose paintings are preserved in, among other places, the Yale University and Harvard University Art Galleries, and now in the upcoming Mu Xin Museum in his hometown Wuzhen.
In 2006, Mu Xin returned to China at the invitation of Wuzhen Township, where the local government had renovated his family house. The same year, his writings were published for the first time in Mainland China.
A selection of Mu Xin's prose fiction, An Empty Room, was published in English by New Directions Publishing in 2011.
Included in this collection are extremely rare interviews Mu Xin conducted while living in New York, and articles written by those who knew Mu Xin personally for more than a decade, and others who know him through his writings and art.

Collected Works of Honore de Balzac with the Complete Human Comedy

by de Balzac, Honore

The Human Comedy (French: La Comédie Humaine) is the title of Honoré de Balzac's multi-volume collection of interlinked novels and stories depicting French society in the period of the Restoration (1815-1830) and the July Monarchy (1830–1848).The Comédie humaine consists of 91 finished works (stories, novels or analytical essays) and 46 unfinished works (some of which exist only as titles). It does not include Balzac's five theatrical plays or his collection of humorous tales, the "Contes drolatiques" (1832–37). The title of the series is usually considered an allusion to Dante's Divine Comedy; while Ferdinand Brunetière, the famous French literary critic, suggests that it may stem from poems by Alfred de Musset or Alfred de Vigny. While Balzac sought the comprehensive scope of Dante, his title indicates the worldly, human concerns of a realist novelist. The stories are placed in a variety of settings, with characters reappearing in multiple stories.
