How to build a digital microscope: construct a reliable, inexpensive microscope for both regular and polarized light microscopy

by Lasse Lu Pedersen

The microscope is the most important tool in the microbiologists toolbox. Nowadays, several companies sell very well made microscopes, but such a luxury was unknown to the earliest microbiologists. They had to build their own microscopes, and many advancements to the science of microbiology were made by people who managed to improve on their own private microscopes.
While basic models have become increasingly affordable in recent years, purchasing a digital microscope can still be a substantial investment - and one that many interested individuals, families, and schools are unwilling or unable to make. Fortunately, it has also become increasingly easy to get the parts for building your very own microscope at a price that is more approachable than that of commercial microscopes!

Elementary Particles: Solving the Antimatter Problem

by Richard Lighthouse

This paper presents mathematical evidence that the “positron” found in numerous laboratory experiments - is actually a probable version of the muon neutrino, which is ordinary matter, not antimatter. This new evidence is based on the 1024-QAM model as the first Periodic Table for Elementary Particles. There are 16 probable versions of the muon neutrino with one third of the mass of an electron. 4 of these have the same charge-to-mass ratio as a common electron. Another 4 have twice the charge-to-mass as a common electron, but with the opposite charge (+2/3), causing them to move in the opposite direction in a magnetic field. To complicate matters further, note that there are 16 probable versions of an electron, with 4 different charges (0, -1, -1/3, +2/3). A 1024-QAM table was pr...

Sensing Absence: How to See What Isn't There in the Study of Science and Security: Chapter 1 from Absence in Science, Security and Policy

by Brian Rappert

Chapter 1 of this book is open access under a CC BY license. This is a chapter from Absence in Science, Security and Policy edited by Brian Rappert and Brian Balmer. This chapter is available open access under a CC BY license. Part reflection on the forthcoming chapters, part analysis of academic literature, and part programmatic agenda setting, this introduction chapter forwards the importance of questioning taken for granted assumptions in sensing what is absent as a concern. It undertakes this through initially examining what it means to characterize concern as absent or present in the first place. While absence and presence are often treated as binary opposites, it will be argued this distinction is difficult to sustain and unhelp for analysis. On the back of an appreciation of the int...
