Time Tunnel To Londinium

by Olli Tooley

David is an ordinary ten year old boy who sometimes gets a bit bored with school work. By a freak chance he ends up travelling backwards in time, and visiting London two thousand years ago.
He makes friends with a Roman boy and is able to use his time tunnel to help the boy out of a difficult situation. This gives him the inspiration to do the best piece of homework his teacher has ever seen.
This book was written for an eight year old with the age group of 8 - 11 (keystage 2) firmly in mind. The first feedback came from my own kids who range from 4 years to 14, and the target demographic definitely enjoyed it and got the most from it.
Several paperback copies of the book have found their way into our local junior school where they are much sought after....

The Mystery of King Tutankhamun

by Ken Derby

Another engaging book from International Reading Association and Children's Book Council "Children's Choices" award-winning author, Ken DerbyDuring Egypt's Eighteenth Dynasty, the Valley of the Kings was used as a royal graveyard. Over the next 3000 years, all but three tombs were discovered in that hot, barren valley. By the early 1900s, most archaeologists believed the three missing royal burial sites were located somewhere else. One of those tombs belonged to Tutankhamun, Egypt's boy king. However, Howard Carter, an archeologist, and George Herbert, a classic English aristocrat, believed differently. The two met for the first time in 1909 and discovered that they had something in common: a strong desire to find the location of Tutankhamun's tomb. They formed an alliance and set their sig...

Common Core Standards and World War II: A Literary Veteran's Day Observance

by Pat Scales

President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a five-star general and commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during World War II, established a committee in 1954 to plan a Veterans Day observance. This day honors all veterans of the United States and is held each year on November 11 with a somber ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. A wreath is placed on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and followed by a parade of colors. In 2015, the United States and the world will mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Victory in Europe occurred on May 8, 1945, but the official end of the war came when Japan surrendered to the United States on August 15, 1945. Some students may have family members who remember World War II, but most only know the hardships both at home and in foreign war zones thr...
