Fungal Disease in Britain and the United States 1850-2000: Mycoses and Modernity (Science, Technology and Medicine in Modern History)

by A. Homei and M. Worboys

This book is open access under a CC BY license. The grand narrative of twentieth-century medicine is the conquering of acute infectious diseases and the rise in chronic, degenerative diseases. The history of fungal infections does not fit this picture; indeed, it runs against it - this book charts the path of fungal infections from the mid nineteenth century to the dawn of the twenty-first century, both in Britain and the United States. It examines how fungal infections became more prevalent and serious over the century, a rise that was linked to the increased incidence of chronic diseases and to social, technological and medical 'progress'. In 1900, conditions such as ringworm, athlete's foot and thrush were minor, external and mostly chronic conditions irritating, but mostly self-limit...

Metabioethics and Biomedicine: Synthesis of principles and applications

by Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragán

A diligent pastor and ever meticulous scholar, the President of the Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care offers us, in this work, a further demonstration of his catechetic talent and theological depth. The book is an important contribution to the cause for the proclamation and defence of the inviolability of human life, dignity of the person and his fundamental inalienable rights. These pages unfold in the midst of a cultural battle, at a historic moment when medical science is characterized, to borrow an expression used by Paul Ricoeur, by the hypertrophy of means and the atrophy of ends. At the beginning of the third millennium, the essential relationship of medicine with truth in particular, with the truth about man, his corporeality and health handed down to us by the c...

7 More Psychological Complexes That You Didn't Know Existed: Cinderella Complex, Superman Complex, Napoleon Complex, Messiah Complex, Phaedra Complex, ... Complex (Transcend Mediocrity Book 125)

by J.B. Snow

With the popularity of my previous book of Psychological Complexes, I am continuing the series to educate readers on a few of the complexes that I missed in my first book. In Book 1 – we covered Jocasta, Medea, Oedipus, Peter Pan, Wendy, Cassandra, Inferiority, Superiority and Cain Complexes. Additionally, I covered Madonna-Whore Complex, Wendy Complex, Peter Pan Complex and Cassandra Complex in separate books, as I felt that they needed further explanation.
These are definitely some of the most interesting and deadly complexes, as they often can cause unrelenting jealousy and scorn between family members. Many of these complexes can encourage a sort of ‘shared’ psychoses between parents and children, lovers or siblings. Many of us know people who suffer from these types o...

Micro circulacao do sangue 101

Many people suffer from PTSD and Complex PTSD. The world is a complex place. It is full of chaos, trauma, business and crime. According to Book of John, the world will become more and more selfish and narcissistic. It is no wonder why people in this century suffer from PTSD or Complex PTSD after experiencing near-daily feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. Things that were not ‘socially acceptable’ prior to the 21st century are now acceptable, including violence on television and video games. Violence is now being flashed in front of the faces of our children beginning in toddlerhood. Our society is becoming more and more distrustful and paranoid of one another. Less mentally ill people are now institutionalized as they were a century ago, leaving more and more people who m...

No More Babies: Forced Sterilization of People of Color in America

by Lena Simmons

Our society has evolved to the reasoning that having and rearing babies is a privilege. The person must have the financial means to support the child without government assistance. Has our society evolved to a physical, financial, intellectual, standard to have the privilege to have children and be a parent. There was a newspaper article that featured prisoners agreeing to be sterilized to have 30 days removed from time in prison. There is a program that gives drug addicted women a stipend to become sterilized. Child rearing and having babies may not be an option for the mentally-challenged, poor, and unacceptable human traits. Why?. What are the characteristics of an evolved human being? We have the science to explore the question. Forced sterilization on non-English poor women, Native Am...

Evaluation of Plan Implementation: Peri-urban Development and the Shanghai Master Plan 1999-2020

by Jinghuan He

Shanghai, like the other big cities along China’s coastline, has witnessed extraordinary growth in its economy and population with industrial development and rural-to-urban migration generating extensive urban expansion. Shanghai’s GDP growth rate has been over 10 per cent for more than 15 years. Its population in 2013 was estimated at 23.47 million, which is double its size in 1979. The urban area enlarged by four times from 644 to 2,860 km2 between 1977 and 2010. Such demanding growth and dramatic changes present big challenges for urban planning practice in Shanghai. Plans have not kept up with development and the mismatch between the proposals in plans and the actual spatial development has gradually increased, reaching a critical level since 2000. This issue of A+BE asks to what e...

Human Rights in Business: Removal of Barriers to Access to Justice in the European Union

by Katerina Yiannibas and Juan José Álvarez Rubio

The capacity to abuse, or in general affect the enjoyment of human, labour and environmental rights has risen with the increased social and economic power that multinational companies wield in the global economy. At the same time, it appears that it is difficult to regulate the activities of multinational companies in such a way that they conform to international human, labour and environmental rights standards. This has partially to do with the organization of companies into groups of separate legal persons, incorporated in different states, as well as with the complexity of the corporate supply chain. Absent a business and human rights treaty, a more coherent legal and policy approach is required.Faced with the challenge of how to effectively access the right to remedy in the European Un...
