Alphabet & Feelings: Kabbalah &Tarot

by Doris Baker

There are two versions of Alphabet of Being. In both versions, I explored the kabbalistic meanings of the Hebrew alphabet then synthesized the essence with pictures and themes.Alphabet of Being includes just the drawings and theme of each letter. Alphabet of Being: Holding the heart expands on these themes with brief excerpts from poems I have written probing emotions from fear and grief to trust and joy. For instance, I write about my father's feeding tube, my husband's hip operations, the confines of selfishness, homelessness and my young son growing in moonlight while he sleeps. The subtitle "Holding the heart" comes from the poem fragment associated with Tav, the last letter of the alef bet: "There's wind aground listening to leaves. They don't ask, 'Must I unfold? Will there be sun?'...

Dead Amidst The Daffodil

by G W Colkitto

The poems in this anthology are a record of a year following bereavementWhen days and nights are long talking to yourself seems a bit insane but I allowed myself to do so in poetry. Most are not cheerful but somehow it helps to let the sadness out. I hope that they tell others in pain that they are not alone and that they give a hint to those who have so far escaped life’s sorrows of the turmoil beneath many a stoic surface....

Belgrade fortress guards the confluence of the Sava into the Danube. A Byzantine citadel awaits a Turkish army that never arrives as it overlooks the river traffic of barges, party boats, and kids learning to sail. The rivers’ banks are nearly pristine tree and reed lines, but development encroaches as the old port capitalizes on its waterfront.

Belgrade’s architecture is kaleidoscopic, freely slipping Yugoslav socialist buildings among the Baroque. Sporadic war ruins bloom like delicate orchids.

The writer is a Japanese. He has been reading and writing English poems since he studied English literature at university. He mainly likes lyrical poems, though he has been influenced by T.S.Eliot and other modernist poets. *******In his letter to the author, Keith Sagar, a British poet, comments on the book:“Many Japanese have an amazing command of English, but I have never before come across one who could write excellent poems in English. Your skill in writing from the point of view of beings normally thought of as inanimate is unique. I started to tick the poems I liked best, but found I was ticking almost all of them....

Hyperion: An Epic Poem from one of the most beloved English Romantic poets, best known for his Odes, Ode to a Nightingale, Ode on a Grecian Urn, Ode to ... Ode to Psyche, Ode to Fanny, Lamia and more

by John Keats

"Hyperion" is an epic poem by 19th-century English Romantic poet John Keats. It is based on the Titanomachia, and tells of the despair of the Titans after their fall to the Olympians. Keats wrote the poem from late 1818 until the spring of 1819, when he gave it up as having "too many Miltonic inversions." The themes and ideas were picked up again in Keats's The Fall of Hyperion: A Dream, when he attempted to recast the epic by framing it with a personal quest to find truth and understanding. The Eve of St. Agnes

by John Keats

"The Eve of St. Agnes" is a poem (42 stanzas). It is widely considered to be amongst his finest poems and was influential in 19th century literature. The poem is in Spenserian stanzas. The title comes from the day (or evening) before the feast of Saint Agnes (or St. Agnes' Eve). St. Agnes, the patron saint of virgins, died a martyr in 4th century Rome. The eve falls on January 20th; the feast day on the 21st. The divinations referred to by Keats in this poem are referred to by John Aubrey in his Miscellanies (1696) as being associated with St. Agnes' night. Keats based his poem on the superstition that a girl could see her future husband in a dream if she performed certain rites on the eve of St. Agnes; that is she would go to bed without any supper, undress herself so that she was complet...

Kubla Khan: A Vision in a Dream & Christabel

by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Christabel is a long narrative poem in two parts. Coleridge planned three additional parts, but these were never completed. The story of Christabel concerns a central female character of the same name and her encounter with a stranger called Geraldine, who claims to have been abducted from her home by a band of rough men. Coleridge aimed to write Christabel using an accentual metrical system, based on the count of only accents: even though the number of syllables in each line can vary from four to twelve, the number of accents per line never deviates from four. Kubla Khan; or, A Vision in a Dream is a poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. According to Coleridge's Preface the poem was composed one night after he experienced an opium-influenced dream after reading a work describing Xanadu...

Ode to a Nightingale

by John Keats

"Ode to a Nightingale" is either the garden of the Spaniards Inn, Hampstead, London, or, according to Keats' friend Charles Armitage Brown, under a plum tree in the garden of Keats House, also in Hampstead. According to Brown, a nightingale had built its nest near his home in the spring of 1819. Inspired by the bird's song, Keats composed the poem in one day. It soon became one of his 1819 odes and was first published in Annals of the Fine Arts the following July. "Ode to a Nightingale" is a personal poem that describes Keats's journey into the state of Negative Capability. The tone of the poem rejects the optimistic pursuit of pleasure found within Keats's earlier poems and explores the themes of nature, transience and mortality, the latter being particularly personal to Keats. The nighti...

by John Keats

Divided into five stanzas of ten lines each, the ode contains a narrator's discourse on a series of designs on a Grecian urn. The poem focuses on two scenes: one in which a lover eternally pursues a beloved without fulfilment, and another of villagers about to perform a sacrifice. John Keats (1795 – 1821) was an English Romantic poet. The poetry of Keats is characterized by sensual imagery, most notably in the series of odes. Today his poems and letters are some of the most popular and most analyzed in English literature. "Ode on a Grecian Urn" was not well received by contemporary critics. It was only by the mid-19th century that it began to be praised, although it is now considered to be one of the greatest odes in the English language.John Keats (1795–1821) was an English Romantic p...
